    Hi All,

I am hoping for a bit of help with my R700 laptop screen flickering and going black problem.

I have tried updating the bios, but to no avail I still have the issue I affraid.

All I am looking for is a list of people who own/have owned this laptop and how long they have had it prior to the screen flickering problem arising. The reason your help is required is, I am currently trying to prove that the laptop is not of a satisfactory quality, under the Sale of Goods Act, as my unit has only lasted for approximately 18 months before this problem has almost rendered the laptop unusable. I am not looking for a full refund or anything like that, but I would like the laptop to be repaired free of charge because in my opinion 18 months is not a long enough period of time for a laptop be rendered useless through fair wear and tear. As the laptop is over 6 months old the burden of proof is on me to prove that the laptop had a fault at the point of sale, rather than just being faulty through fair wear and tear. I am hoping that every Samsung r700 owner who has/is experiencing this issue can follow my lead and quite rightly get a free of charge repair to fix this issue, as I do not believe the "reasonable man" could honestly say 18 months of use means that the laptop is of a satisfactory quality.

Your assistance in this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Is the flicker in the display itself or in the backlight? And, if the display goes black but you can still see a feint image then it is the backlight going off. The R700 is probably old enough that the display is not using LED backlighting, in which case I wonder if the problem is with the inverter (which provides the high voltage for the miniature fluorescent tube. Inverters are high up my list of unreliable notebook components (which is why I'm in favour of LED backlighting).

    Hi John,

Thanks for the reply, the display goes black but you can still see a very feint image but it is so feint you cannot use it. I don't think that it is an LED display. Could you let me know how much it is likely to cost to repair this issue?

    Thanks again

I haven't a clue how much it would cost to fix. Labour will be likely more expensive than parts but still a lot less than a new notebook.

Unless you know a competent local repair person, you may want to contact you nearest Samsung repair centre for a quotation.

Thanks John for all your help.

And I have to say a huge vote of thanks to the guy I spoke to at Derwen Computers in Wrexham. I rang for a quote on the repair work and he advised me to speak to Samsung as their customer service was excellent and might be able to help, and he would do the work if they couldn't help. So, if there is anyone looking for a anything computer related, I'd highly recommend giving them a call as I have a huge vote of thanks to them for going the extra mile, and being honest enough to advise me to try elsewhere first and in effect doing themselves out of a bit of business. It's nice to know that not everyone puts money first.

Also thanks must go to Samsung, who have agreed to repair my laptop free of charge even though it is 18 months old and now out of the manufacturers warranty.

I suppose you could argue, that it should not have gone wrong in the first place, but I can only give huge amounts of praise to there customer service team who are absolutely first class and a credit to the computer industry.

That's good news. You struck lucky. :) There's a number of disgruntled R70 owners whose GPUs went on the blink after the normal warranty period had expired but they couldn't get Samsung to accept any liability for fixing the problem.

My Samsung R700 has been having the same problem. mik9999, how did you manage to get Samsung to accept responsibility and do the repair. I have been in touch through the support website and on the phone and just get the response that it is out of warranty. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
