My Win 7 was perfectly fine yesterday. I did not put on any new software, the only out of the ordinary thing was I went on a website called Quora which got me signed up aggressively.

Anyway, I had saved images using Todo Back Up but as I have no means to start that software now, not much use. I have a Win Recovery disk that works, but start up repair did not work. It gave me the option to restore an image from Dec 2014, and in my desperation I went with it, but even though the re-format claims it worked, when it's finalised the laptop does not boot. I had an SSD installed and migrated the OS to it. When I did the Win RE disk start up repair the reason given was boot sector for system disk partition is corrupt. How do I proceed? Can I access Todo Back up Software somehow and use the images I made? What is the best thing to do?

I would suspect corrupted boot files.

Try following the advice here. You should be able to get to the console on the recovery disc.

If the problem is corrupted files then you should check the hard drive's health, preferably with the drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility.

    Hi John,

It did not work. When I did the last CMD line I got message that 1 Windows installation was found on E drive, but it could not access it because of 'wrong file format'. Tried several times, no successs.

I then got a PE Disk to work. It said there was a problem with a drive that may have been disconnected or failing. The only options I got were Windows Memoery Diagnostics Tool, which is running now, 7th test with no problems. I thought I would be able to get at the Todo Backup software with the PE disk, to browse for the recovery image, but no such choice was available.

Is my only hope now to try and re-install Win 7 from scratch? I suspect the SSD may have given up the ghost though. What can I do?

I would remove the drive and test its health in another computer before trying anything else.

What make of SSD? Google to find out if it has known reliability issues.
