    Hi All,

I have a Samsung Q45 that recently decided to break. Recreating the problem:

    1. I have the laptop plugged in on mains power and the lights show at the front of the laptop
    2. I press the "power on" button and it lights up for about 1 second and then cuts out
    3. If I press and hold down the "power on" button it lights up for about 2 seconds and I can hear the hard drive make the usual clunking sound when it begins to boot up and then it cuts out

    Some background information:

    1) My battery stopped working and I had been running the laptop on mains power
    2) My power cable stopped working so I bought a new one (non-Sasmung brand)
    3) Before the laptop stopped turning on, the laptop would randomly turn off when on mains power (as there was no battery the disruption caused the laptop to turn off)

Any ideas on what the problem could be here? Is it as simple as a broken power switch or as painful as a fried motherboard (and what is the best way to test it)?

I'd like to try and salvage the laptop as it is still a great little machine!

The first thing I would do is to remove and replace the RAM. Sometimes the contacts oxidise and, if the BIOS can't see the RAM, everything stops. If that doesn't work, try each module in turn (I can't remember the Q45 RAM configuration).

If that doesn't fix the problem then it is time to find a multi-meter and check the voltage (a) coming from the PSU and (b) at the battery terminals.

    Thanks for your reply

I took it apart, and then put it back together and now it's working perfectly! No idea what fixed it, but I'm sure it's something similar to what you mentioned :)
