Hello, I'm hoping maybe someone could help me...
When I put in a blank dual layer DVD, the drive starts making some unpleasant seeking noises, attempts to spin up the disc a few times, then decides that I only have a CD drive installed. When I restarted with said disc in the drive, the drive was no longer visible at all.
I've tried with a few discs - all the same outcome, and I've never had a problem with them before. The drive behaves normally with CDs, DVDs and DVD-Rs.
Drive is TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633L
Discs are printable Adata 8.5GB
Using Vista Home Premium
If anyone has any idea what the problem could be, I'd be very grateful. Not really looking forward to sending my Q310 back.

1. Download and run the Nero Infotool to confirm that the burner supports dual layer (both +R and -R). Is your disc +R or -R?
2. See if you can beg or borrow another brand of disc. Does this work or not? I have found that almost all burners have their favourite food and some they don't like.
3. Use DVD Identifier to read the media code for the disc. Post the info here.
Can other people please advise the media codes of dual layer discs which work?
Last year I had a problem with the TS-L632M in my Samsung X60plus which wouldn't work with Ritek G05 media (a respectable brand). I sent a message to Samsung support and after correspondence with someone (in Holland) we concluded that the burner was defective. I was sent a replacement which I swapped and sent the old one back.

Hi.
I have never tried dl-dvd`s , but below is the infotool results form my TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633L on my Q210.
It looks like DL is supported.
Have you tried other brand`s of DL disks?

So the burner should support read and write for both +R DL and -R DL.
The next test is another brand. Or do I understand that the burner is no longer visible. If so, what burning software have you installed?

D: I just brought I pack of DVD-RWs, I hope they work.
I dont see why not, and its a little late to ask, but can you boot from a DVD rather than a CD? -
It is possible to boot from DVD's as I have done on a number of occasions for linux.
To the OP, I suggest trying another brand, I find that some burners are picky for some brands. My desktop refuses to burn certain brands, but works flawlessly for others. -
I get the same Infotool results as Tinderbox (though for some reason I only have 4 Region Code changes left and it's set to region 1 - I haven't used any region 1 DVDs in it, so that's a bit strange).
DVD Identifier can't read the disc, as the drive won't read it at all. Having inserted it, DVD Identifier now says "No supported drives found" and Windows tells me I have a CD Drive installed. A restart has restored my DVD drive the other 5 times I tried this.
So all I can say about the discs is that they all have IFPI FW67 printed round the spindle in tiny writing. I must have made Adata up, the discs are "Aone 8x speed DVD+R Dual Layer Full-Faced Inkjet Printable".
...I've just tried putting a disc in my friend's R70's TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L632N and it won't read these things either. At least his drive recovers without a restart when you take the disc out though.
I've got another 26 of these things, so I'm not happy!
As I'm going to have to buy some other media to test this, any idea which brand I should get? Any proven to work? -
TDK, Sony and Verbatim disks ought to work.

I have burnt 8x dvd-r and 4x dvd-rw both single layer without problems.
-
Ah ****it, those discs cost 48p each and haven't failed me before.
Looking at ebuyer I can get:
10 Memorex 8x for £1.03 each,
25 Arita 2.4x for 48p each,
25 Infiniti 8x for 62p each,
10 Verbatim 8x for £1.58 each
Any ideas on which ones to get or a better place to get them? I'm not a massive fan of throwing money away.
Thank you -

I was using blue top TDK 16x dvd-r and they write at 8x

I usually get my discs from UKDVDR but you need to buy in bulk to justify the delivery charge.
An alternative is play.com. I see Maxell and Memorex. There's nothing as cheap as the discs you have, but the more expensive branded media are more likely to be supported by the drive. And, if you still have a problem, then you have got a better case to put before Samsung technical support.

PS: 7dayshop have the Crumpler gimp sleeve at a reasonable price, plus half price delivery (=£1.99) this weekend. -
I just brought a 10 pack of 4x DVD-RWs for £7.86 off Amazon which I thinks a fair price, I've never heard of the brand though.

Verbatim is a reputable brand.
What really matters is the dye used on the discs. Each disc is coded with this information. The burner reads the code and looks in a table in the firmware for the details for optimum burning.
