Hey, i originally had Windows Vista Home Premium x86 installed on my computer.

as a student, i have copies of Windows 7 x64 and x86 available to me for free

Note the upgrade advisor said both x86 and x64 are compatible with my laptop/CPU

i wanted to do an upgrade of Windows Vista to Windows 7 and i decided that i would first upgrade to x86 and make sure Windows 7 is good before upgrading to x64.

this went fine, i had x86 running fine on my laptop for a couple of days, and then i decided to upgrade to x64.

i created a USB boot disk (as i experienced the renowned problems with the CD boot disks), and ran the installer on my laptop. Everything went semi-fine.
Copying files, Expanding Windows Files, Installing Features, and Installing Updates all went fine. It was when it got to "Completing Installation" that things went a bit wrong..

Well it was "Completing" the installation for about 2 minutes, then the screen flashed a bit and the computer restarted itself, i assumed this was normal because i experienced the same thing when installing x86. Anyway, when the laptop booted up i was shown some kind of "Starting Services" (can't remember the exact terminoligy?).. and after about 5 seconds of that screen i was greeted with this nasty message:

"The Computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error, window installation cannot proceed to install windows, click "OK" to restart the computer then restart installation"

Clicking OK just reboots the laptop and the same thing happens in an infinate loop. I have tried running the installer multiple times and i get the same error, eventually i have to install x86 again to clear out the Windows.old file's before i can have another try. (which was a bit of a pain)

I have now reinstalled x86 and that's working fine again, but i would much like to get x64 working to make use of my 4GB ram.. Has anyone got any tips on how to get it to work? There doesn't seem to be a single solution online - not even on microsoft's own website! I'd be greatfull if you could help me!

Thank you so much! This was a page which google search did not find.
After reading it and following multiple instructions in the thread, i managed to get x64 working :) you can add me to that list of those reporting success!

Here's what i did, to anyone experiencing similar issues:
    • Upgraded my BIOS via the Samsung.com website
    • Burnt the installer ISO to USB-Boot stick using UltraISO
    • Booted the computer and pressed F2 to enter bios
    • Disabled Wireless Device Control (i'm not sure if this made any difference, someone said it stopped the updates during the installer that could have caused problems)
    • Set AHCI to manual - disabled
    • THEN. changed the boot order so that the USB CD and USB HDD are listed 1st and second
    • F10. Saved Changes and booted up windows.
    • Installed Windows x64 successfully without nasty error :)

    After installing:
    • Went back into bios
    • reset the boot order
    • enabled Wireless Device Control.
    • do not re-enable AHCI, for some reason it was stopping the system from booting. Leave it disabled after installing x64.
    • F10. Saved Changes and booted up windows.

OH AND, ONCE YOU HAVE INSTALLED SUCCESSFULLY, CREATE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT AND SAMSUNG RECOVERY FILE.

Hope this helped! Thanks for your help John! Great Forum!
