For some reason SW Update is giving me the option to update SSD firmware but I do not have an SSD. The guy at Samsung support took 30mins(with remote desktop) and never found anything(I cut it off by mistake so maybe if I didn't he would have found the problem).

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    The firmware is under miscellaneous

    Thanks

Which model notebook? Unless you have the ExpressCache I would ignore the message. SW Update is probably using a standard list of possible downloads for your notebook. I like to do any updates on a local basis. Given that BIOS updates done through SW Update sometimes resulted in bricking I wouldn't want to do a SSD firmware update through this route. There is usually a warning to backup the computer before applying an update.

I have just run SW Update (which first updated itself to Samsung Update) on my Samsung NP900X3B and see that it is offering an SSD firmware update. The SSD is is a Crucial M550 which I checked from the Crucial site is running the latest firmware. So either SW Update is trying to push an update for the original Sandisk U100 or it is completely confused (not unknown). When I look for updates using the Find Model option in SW Update there is not mention of any firmware updates.

No idea if I have expressCache or not. I just know my laptop has a standard hdd. I was thinking the standard list thing like you said, thats kinda dumb to me why would they do that? Also thanks for the bios tip, I had no idea. Will try to leave the bios alone God willing.

edit: my main reasons for using sw update is convenience and windows 8.1 brightness breaking.

That model won't have ExpressCache. SW Update is being dumb. Samsung are very good with hardware but their software side has scope for improvement.

Do keep the BIOS updated, especially if you have Windows 8 and UEFI is enabled. However, don't do it through SW Update but use the stand-alone BIOS Update problem as described here.

My NP700Z3A, which does have ExpressCache, also shows an SSD firmware update in SW Update (or Samsung Update, as it is now called).

I wonder if it is indeed for the small SanDisk iSSD used by ExpressCache, and if so whether I want to to risk installing it. I am long out of warranty, so if this borks my laptop I'll be completely on my own.

Unfortunately SW Update only shows it in the Update section, not under Save Setup Files nor under Find Model. That makes it more difficult to save and inspect the package before installing it.

Since my ExpressCache is running fine, I think I'll just skip it for now. Needless to say, if anyone takes the plunge and installs this, we'd love to hear the outcome.
