    Hi all,

I've recently bought a WD USB 3.0 external HDD to use with my Samsung NP900X3C-A01AU running Windows 7
It works fine in the USB 2.0 port, but not the USB 3.0 port.

To begin with, it would give me the blue screen of death (BSOD) and I'd have to restart the computer.
Figured the thing to do would be to uninstall all of the USB drivers and re-install fresh ones from the Samsung website.

So, following this, still the USB 2.0 works fine, but still the 3.0 port doesn't.
No longer do I get a BSOD, but the HDD doesn't show up in Windows..

In Device Manager, the Renseas Electronics USB 3.0 Host Controller has a yellow question mark over it
"This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

Any idea what my next step should be? Would be nice to get it working.

Update the Renesas firmware and driver.

I believe your X3C is basically the same as my X4C in which case the Renesas controller is uPD720202 (you can check using SiSoftware Sandra's Mainboard report).

Too easy, thanks so much Mr. JR, worked a treat!

While I have the thread open, any ideas if windows 8.1 leads to better everyday performance than win7 on the NP900X3 laptops?

Which worked? Firmware update, driver update or both?

Some people have found that Windows 8.1 has more running in the background than Windows 8.

Personally, I prefer Windows 7 on a normal notebook. I used Windows 8 on my NP900X4C for a while but found that features that I didn't want would get in the way and there were no obvious performance benefits.

Thanks, was thinking a similar thing.

As for what specifically fixed the USB issue - not sure exactly - just uninstalled all the drivers & firmware, and re-installed fresh using your provided link.
Weird that those worked and the ones on the Samsung website did not?

    Much appreciate the help.

The only software for notebooks up to about 3 years old that you should use from Samsung's website is SW Update.

That software will then look in a database for the latest software / drivers for the notebook. However, Samsung tend to not update anything once a notebook is out of production unless there is a major issue.

See this thread for the best way to check for BIOS updates.
