    Hello,

I am looking to upgrade the 7200 rpm HDD in this model to a Samsung 840 pro SSD.
The only problem I am having is finding information about the capabilities of this laptop.

Does anybody know if this model supports 6Gb/s to get the full benefit of the 840 pro? I am just about sold on this SSD, but I wouldn't want to spend the money if my laptop can't use it to it's best ability.

Thanks to anybody who can provide a solid answer :)

    -Josh

Yes. I installed a Samsung 830 SSD and get 6GB/s using the HDD controller. The DVD controller gets you less.

Excellent! That is good news to hear indeed :) While I have this thread active, could you (or anybody) also confirm that the motherboard supports 12g of ram by replacing the 1 slot from a 4g stick to an 8g stick?
Do you see 12g as usable memory, or does it only read a max of 8g?

    Thanks again!

What is the processor for swapping to an 840 in a 700Z7C, do I simply clone my HDD or is it more complicated than that?

I intend on doing a fresh OS install, and disabling the 8gb drive, but that's because I have relatively few programs to worry about because this laptop is only a couple of months old, and I haven't had time to accumulate much. I have the latest wireless card driver on a thumb drive, so I will install it from that after the fresh OS install, and then download SW Update to install the rest of the necessary drivers from there. Re-install a few things like Open Office, Adobe reader, flash player, java, etc. and then I expect I'll be good to go.

I've read that there is a need to switch a setting or 2 in the bios, but I'll figure that out when the time comes. I've also read about cloning and partitioning and stuff like that, but I don't believe it's too complicated. I'm used to building desktops and customizing stuff, so I don't expect to be too challenged by the task.

Does anybody know about the ram? I'm about to purchase an 8gb stick to bump it up to a total of 12gb, but I again don't want to spend the money unless I am certain that it will work properly first.

    Thanks,
    -Josh

There are plenty of reports here that an 8GB module will work fine. Try putting this "site: forum.notebookreview.com/samsung NP700Z7C 12GB" into Google.

Hello John, and thank you for replying to my thread :)

I tried your suggestion and it pulls up a lot of threads about the NP700Z7C-S01US, however I own the S03US version... Are they the same motherboard and will they produce the same results? I can't seem to find anybody who actually owns the S03US to confirm that 12g works for that exact model.
    Thanks!

I'm 99% sure they will be the same board. Usually the difference between models is a different size HDD or Windows version. These variations can be implemented at the assembly stage.

Also, the key factor for the RAM support is the memory controller (which is in the CPU). You can check for yourself, but I think your CPU will support 2 x 8GB. In fact, if you check the CPU specs on the Intel website you may find it is 2 x 16GB.

Yes. I installed an 8GB stick bringing up the total memory to 12GB. I can look for the package information if you need more help. It was ordered from Amazon and has the Patriot brand name.
