    Hello!
    I appreciate your help with some problem my laptop is having.I have no idea how to find the source of the problem.
    Model : NP700Z5C S02-UB; BIOS: P07ABJ(latest);
    Hdd setup:I have a 120GB Samsung 840 EVO and the old HDD in a caddy.

    Symptoms are:

    1. Sleep mode is broken. If in the power settings, the laptop is set to go to sleep when the lid is closed or when the power button is pressed,
    the screen would turn black when doing either of this but they keyboard lights will remain on and you can still hear some activity inside.
    You need to power off and power on the laptop again.
    2. Restart doesn't work. If you restart the laptop through windows, or if it needs to automatically restart after installing some software, it will shutdown instead.

    What I've tried:

    - changed the ssd with the old hdd and got the same behaviour;
    - tried liunx mint 16 to see if it's really a win 8.1 problem..and..I got the same behaviour.
    - tride bios update but I've the latest version so it won't update

    Any suggestions?

    I would normally say it is a software problem for sure: Either a driver or some program running in the background is telling Windows that it is busy with something too important to allow the system to go to sleep. Same thing when trying to restart: Some driver/program claims to be too important to allow shutdown.

    You can look in Event Viewer ( Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Event Viewer) under Administrative Events, which will usually tell you if a driver is preventing sleep/shutdown.

    But the fact that you saw the same problem under Linux Mint makes me think it may be something deeper, either BIOS issue or a hardware defect. You could try a reset of the CMOS/BIOS tables using the procedure described here and here.

    Also, if you still have Recovery on that original HDD, you could try and perform a factory restore. If the problem is still present with a factory installation (and after the CMOS/BIOS reset) it's time to call Samsung.

    You could also try to roll back your BIOS to an earlier version -- if you have it or can find it. Read the thread linked below before starting, so you understand the process. There is a utility posted here to help find BIOS versions.
