After say an hour use the pad gets inoperable - connecting a usb mouse still works.
switching off a few hours restores the touchpad.
Of course I'm thinking of a hardware/heat issue, but any other ideas, friends?

Did a W7 reset to August 5, when the laptop worked OK AFAIK.
    Did not help.

If there's something I could try before I return the machine for repair (bought March 2012) I'd be happy to learn!

Use the Find Model function in Samsung's SW Update to get the Elan touchpad driver for a current model such as the NP770Z5E. You may find that the newer driver fixes your problems. If not, then it's looking as if your hardware diagnosis is correct.

If you end up sending the computer for repair you will need to include a note explaining in simple words in big letters how to reproduce the problem. Otherwise the technician will turn the computer on, see that the touchpad works and then turn it off saying "problem not found".
