i bought a new vertex 3 240gb sata 3(6gb/s) SSD and installed it in the first hard drive bay, AHCI enabled etc etc...but it doesnt seem to be performing at Sata 6gb/s speeds....i know the HM76 chipset supports sata III and samsung support told me that the laptop supports Sata III(6gb/s) on the first hard drive and sata II(3.0gb/s) on the second drive....any wisdom for me here guys? How do i enable it? and btw im assuming since tech support said it supports sata 6gb/s on first hard drive that would indicate the HDD bay #1 would be that one....?

I would be tempted to go into Device Manager and uninstall the Intel AHCI controller (probably under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers) and then reboot. Windows should then reinstall the controller and may get the setting correct.
An alternative may be to reinstall the Intel Rapid Storage driver. First check for a newer version.

it wont ruin my current install of windows if i remove that driver? kinda like changing AHCI/IDE in bios?

If you are worried then start by just reinstalling the storage driver. That might fix the settings.
If you uninstall the driver then Windows will boot using a default Microsoft driver before searching for and installing the correct driver and most likely asking for a further reboot to get it installed.

also i have a problem where windows will boot sometimes...but other times it hangs on the starting windows splash screen....laptop is brand new and when it actually boots i have no problems with BSOD b/c of SSD...why the hell would it do this?
-
btw i did find a new intel rapid storage driver and so i removed AHCI driver and rebooted then installed that driver....still at sata 3gb

Have you downloaded the newest Bios, Theres an option for sata gen3 mode. This might be your problem?

...i have searched the bios up and down and did not see anything regarding sata gen 3? -
-

bios file is named : ITEM_20120525_543_WIN_P04AAB
-
-
also my vertex 3 firmware is version 2.22 which is the latest version
-
-
it should....really im more concerned with that fact that my laptop wont boot over half the time...if i reboot the laptop enough times it will boot fine...not a problem once i get past the splash screen...but why would it do that?
-
-
when your computer wont boot does it hang at the flashing cursor?
-
no it hangs on starting windows splash screen...with the dots that swirl around and expand into the windows logo....except when it wont boot it doesnt even start swirling lol
-
freezes here
-
derp that pic didnt work
imagine that picture without the dots.... -

-
well my recovery CD doesnt have any samsung drivers...i know that because i had to download all of them upon a reformat/install
-
PM'd you.
Cheers -
what exactly is the issue with the windows 7 home premium provided by samsung? in process of downloading windows 7 ultimate off torrent site
-
checking PM's now, thanks!
-
talk about great tech support lol....hope fresh install fixes the problem...maybe it has to do with the fact that the SSD is obviously not stock with laptop and samsung windows disc expects all original hardware to be there?
-
brb, i gotta go to taco bell and get some food....cant stand eating any more ramen noodles!!
-
also i noticed when i installed the SSD that the two Hard drives in the laptop use two different connectors....both are same on the hard drive end, but on the end that connects to the motherboard they are completely different...
-
problem solved, switched to standard AHCI driver and it ran beautiful!....intel RST f-ed it up
