Update: by applying light pressure to the side of the power connector, I was able to get the AC adapter to charge the NC-20. Obviously I should not be as ready to accept a friend's (or Fry's) "word" that the AC adapter is dead. Duh. Apparently it is likely an issue with the power connector, either on the adapter or the system itself. Requiring both to be sent in for service is a perfectly reasonable troubleshooting request from Samsung. Bad on me.

You should consider buying your own multimeter. Even a cheap one will be more reliable than the opinions of many of the staff in the big electronics stores.

Sage advice--I do have one, but I've been sick, and thus, lazy. Easier to post here rather than digging it out and modifying it to fit inside the little DC connector, I apologize :(. My friend had already gone to Frys, and I figured she and they would have been at least partially vigilant about testing it. Admittedly, I was only mildly surprised when I was able to get it to work.
