I has two DDR3 SoDIMM slots and can be upgraded to 16GB. See the pic below of the inside of the NP900X4B. The layout hasn't changed much in the X4C or X4D.

You have to remove 10 small screws on the bottom of the machine and take off the whole bottom sheet metal plate. It isn't that hard. If you plan to upgrade the mSATA drive, do both at the same time.

There is a photo of the inside of my X4C in my review. The X4D is the same internally. The SSD is to the left of the fan.

You cannot fit a 2.5" SSD into the X4C. You need an mSATA SSD. See my photo here which shows the difference in size.

Device Manager will give the SSD model number which you may need to Google for more details.

Read this thread and this thread.

Windows 8 makes the process more complicated. Do you have a Windows 8 disc?

It's useful to have a USB optical drive available and they aren't expensive (<$25). You don't need a Samsung branded drive.

We know that a clean install from a disc will work with Secure Boot and UEFI disabled. Other ways may work but tend to create more hassle.

Any of the drives here, except the CD-ROM, should work. The hassle is the same with any notebook that does not include an optical drive.

I'm sure someone did test 2 x 8GB in either the X4C or X4D to confirm that the configuration worked, but I'm happy with my 2 x 4GB configuration.

Even if Samsung left out one of the RAM sockets it would work with 1 x 8GB. The only possible obstacle that you might encounter is that when Samsung updated the BIOS a few months ago they deleted support for 1.35V RAM so it would be prudent to use 1.5V modules.
