Great laptop overall, but have a couple of questions.

    1. The trackpad drivers don't seem to enable upon a fresh boot. Meaning, when getting to the desktop, features such as multi-touch gestures and scrolling don't always work. The way I get them back is going to the Mouse control panel section and simply hitting "OK". Only then does it seem to "load" the mouse features. How can I correct this?

    2. ExpressCache seems to be screwing up my browsing. I like the idea of using it for boot, but how can I disable it for browsing?

    3. Is there a list of applications that I can safely uninstall? I'd like to pretty much get rid of everything, but keep the drivers that control the keyboard (brightness, mute button, etc).

    4. Do owners of the 15.6" version notice a very, very slight dimming of brightness on the edges of the screen? It seems to me just caused by the LED lighting. Doesn't really bother me, and I think I noticed it at the store and from a couple users, but curious if this is somewhat common. Overall, I think the display is pretty nice IMO, though I'm not a photo junkie or anything like that.

    Thanks.

When you refer to ExpressCache "screwing up your browsing" can you be a little more definitive. What are the symptoms? Have you tried a different browser? And which browser are you using where you see an issue?
And, no, ExpressCache can not be disabled for browsing.

@rpeters: Congrats on your new laptop!

    1) I don't know if this applies to your situation, but for some reason (and only on some installations) touchpad drivers seem to load and activate very slowly. It can be a minute or longer after startup. I would try and uninstall the Elan drivers (Windows Programs & Features), reboot, then re-install them. Also make sure you check this thread for touchpad advice (that was a link). There is probably a newer driver version out than the one that came with your PC -- and possibly also newer than the one offered to you by Easy Software Manager / SW Update.

    2) ExpressCache is just a piece of software that uses the built-in iSSD to cache frequently read files on the HDD. Files saved and loaded by the browser would rarely qualify for caching at all. Are you sure ExpressCache is the culprit of whatever you're experiencing?

    Update: Two things to try:

    A) Reset the ExpressCache in Easy Settings, in case corrupted versions of some browser program files got cached.

    B) Uninstall the ExpressCache software (Windows Programs & Features), just to isolate if EC is truly the culprit. You can always re-install it.

Also, check this thread for symptoms similar to yours -- though it's mostly about getting ExpressCache working when it isn't.

    3) Check this post.

    4) Cannot speak to that as I have a different model.

Generally on issues 1 & 2, I'd say doing a Complete Restore from recovery is worth considering. It never gets easier than when the PC is new, before you load it with applications and data.

Let us know how it goes.

    1. The trackpad issue turned out to be my fault. I had disabled it from running upon startup. That's all fine now.

    2. I thought it was, as I've seen a couple others complain about the same issue. The issue no longer seems to show itself, but before, I would go to a page or two, and the page styling or images wouldn't load, so the page would appear odd. Refreshing usually fixed it. Again, no longer seems to be an issue at the moment.

    3. Thanks!

    4. No problem - was just curious. I guess it's just a characteristic of the thin LCD and the diffuser causing a slight "dimming" on each side. I can't even take a picture of it it's so unnoticeable. Looking at it straight on, it appears just fine. Maybe it's a result of the poor viewing angles I keep hearing about :)

If this is Windows 8 then see the Windows 8 thread. Start from about here.
