Is it the entire DVD drive (I think that's what you're saying) or a specific DVD disc that isn't recognized?

Which Windows version? Any recent version of Windows will have built-in drivers for any SATA DVD drive, although those will be overtaken by Intel Rapid Storage (assuming you have that installed).

Does the drive show up in Device Manager? If so, you can try and delete the device in there and restart Windows (which will re-detect it).

If it DOESN'T show up in Device Manager, you can try HWiNFO or Minitool Partition Wizard (Google them) but they probably don't show it either in that case.

Are you able to insert a disc and eject it with Fn-Delete? That would indicate the DVD drive is at least alive and properly connected.

With a bootable disc in the drive (such as the Windows Recovery Media that may have come with the laptop) try and go to BIOS settings (F2 after power on). Under Boot Priority, are you able to select the DVD drive?

You should be able to insert and eject discs in BIOS -- assuming the drive hardware is working.

If you believe the DVD drive hardware is working and properly connected, and that this is a Windows driver issue, you could try and uninstall/re-install Intel Rapid Storage. Before re-installing, check if the DVD drive shows up using Windows' own built-in SATA drivers. And download the latest version of Intel Rapid Storage offered by SW Update before re-installing.

Finally, you can check the DVD drive manufacturer's website for tools and firmware updates. Mine has a Matshita drive (as shown in Device Manager) but yours could be different.

    That's all I got :vboops:

Another place to check is in Disk Management. I've sometimes had problems of a drive not showing up until I changed the drive letter and occassionally the original letter has been lost and one needs to be assigned.
