I ran into some strange panel / gpu driver behavior:
- horizontal lines appear by running X on linux
- lines persist reboot / battery reset and are visible in BIOS screen and across different OSes
- over the course of an hour or two those lines disappear by slowly fading back to normal
- flickering screen on Windows 7 + 8.1 preview with Windows stock drivers when screen wakes up after being switched off by power management
edit: solved see post #6
-
I say return it, the problem could be coming from the screen itself, the graphic card or the display connector. Take pictures of said lines before you try to return it or send it in for repair.
Good luck! -
looks like this: Garbage on screen on Samsung NP900X3E-A02 - bugs.freedesktop.org
very strange bug...
... and today Win 8.1 preview woke up with a flickering screen from standby -
Again, send it back to Samsung. There is nothing you can do to fix a problem like this that doesn't require disassembling the chassis.

According to the bug report this affects ALL NP900X3E models and probably NP900X3F as well as it uses much of the same hardware.
The bug has been fixed apparently by a kernel update (not tested myself yet). The issue with Windows 8.1 preview (stock drivers) might be an indicator that this panel has some design flaws.
Returning would mean switching to a different model altogether, which I'm not very fond of since it is an awesome machine including the panel. The pre installed Windows 8 doesn't show any issues, so I'm hoping on the drivers.
I will update once further tested... -
Lines bug appears to be solved with kernel 3.10-rc5 and > mid june intel-drm drivers
Flickering bug on 8.1 appears to be solved with current Intel HD Graphic drivers (tested with PROSet Wireless 16.1.1)
