I was initially going to wait for the 8870 model, but after hearing that it was going to cost maybe $400 or $500 more, I've decided to go with the 8770 model. How is the gaming performance on that? I am not a hardcore gamer, and only occasionally play games such as Portal 2 and CS GO. I think the $1200 price point is fair for the best buy model, and it should be good enough. Plus I don't want to wait anymore,
    Thanks!

sick of waiting too, but i'm not happy with what i read from fellow forum peeps about the gaming performance. plus it was sold for less than $1200 , its worth less than that.

yikes! are you absolutely sure the pricing is going to be 1600$ + tax? I only got 1500 solid to spare, I really hope what you're saying isn't true :(

How bad can it be? How does the 8770m compare to the 6750m in the previous model?

I don't game, but I need graphics performance for photoshop, video editing, and VJing (video DJ). My four year old Dell XPS 1330m with a 128MB card does what I need here. The NP700Z5A-S03US did what I needed except for the switching issue. That's actually the main reason I'm upgrading - graphics switching may have been "fixed" by a driver update but when I ran a second monitor for VJing the main screen would often freeze. I'm not sure what the cause was but it was never resolved.

Are today's games really so graphics intensive that you need the latest card just to run them?

Read what notebookcheck has to say about the 8770M. There are no games results yet for that GPU but there are plenty for the 8750M, so that sets the baseline for your expectations.

I've played 2 older games on mine (Half-Life and Witcher) and both ran totally fine at full 1080p. Looked extremely clean and crisp on the display. Though got some minor loading screens at times due to the slower 5400 rpm HDD. But not too bad, I don't have any desire at this point in time to replace it with SSD....not just yet.

After spending $1200 on this laptop last Fri, I'm too broke to buy any newer PC games right now..lol.

Well if you do price conversions from where it's currently sold, it turns out to be around $1500. The graphics card should be suffice for a college student who just occasionally plays games. Plus, it's $300 less.

    Bumping this thread.

I returned mine but now seriously considering re-buying a open box 15" Chronos with 8770 ($1049 at Bestbuy).

Any current owners care to chime in, particularly on gaming performance with the 8770? I only played older games on mine when I owned it briefly and both ran fine at full HD.

More interested in Bioshock Infinite and possible shooters like BLOPS2, BF3 (BF4 when it comes out). Even if I can run these at 1600 X900, I'm a happy camper.

    Thx.

OP here. I actually gave in and bought the 8770M model. NOT BAD. I feel like people are waiting for the 8870M because it's "better," but probably 80% of those waiting will be fine with the 8770. This graphics card works amazingly, to be honest. I got it for $1200, which is an amazing deal. Considering that the 8870's going to cost $1500, I'm sticking with this Bestbuy model. My main games are CSGO and Portal 2, which are not graphic intensive, but I just picked up Arma 3 and it runs it pretty nicely. If anyone has any questions about the 8770 model, ask away :)

I was in the same boat exactly and did rebuy the open box for $1044. If the 8870 is going to be $1500 thats almost a $500 difference. I did replace the HD with a Samsung SSD and the difference is night and day. The only nagging issue I have is the backlight and how it auto adjusts. The contrast on the keys is also not the greatest , but I could live with that if the backlight wasnt such a pain.

Thanks for the input, guys! I'm going back to BB tomorrow and if they have my return still left on the display, I'll buy it (again). At $1049, it's a no-brainer price..even for the 8770 version. With it's ultrabook specs, the closet competition is the 15" Zenbook (650m card) and it's priced well close to $2k!!!

Found my answer. One reviewer at Bestbuy (US) stated this:

"The gaming performance is better than I expected with a throttled 8870M GPU, averaging 25-30 FPS on most modern (2012-2013) games. Bioshock: Infinite runs at 25 FPS on high settings."

This is good enough for me, considering the low price I'll be paying for this model.

The only thing different between this model and the 8870M model is the graphics card and the RAM, but I'm still doubting that most people will need that powerful of a device. This thing is already a beast, so I think the 8870 is overkill for MOST people, not all. 8870 runs most games just fine.

Does ANYONE have experience with the AMDRadeon HD 8770M with regards to graphics performance for Photoshop, video editing, things like fireworks, Adobe Illustrator and Audition? I am looking for a laptop for the girlfriend which can handle these. Gaming info is easy to come by...'work' program info, less so...
