I have a common Sammy SN-208BB optical drive in my 3 Series. its at rev 00 firmware. downloaded from several sites the later updates to the firmware [there are at least 6] but all fail, giving the "device not found" or "target device not present" or variants thereof.
anyone know the magic to this? The windows registry does not show any UpperFilters or LowerFilters entries for the unit: it just looks like a generic device. Device Manager shows it as SN-208BB however....
all help appreciated

Have you tried using Samsung's LiveUpdate program? It might ensure you have the right firmware version.
A quick search reveals three firmware versions for the SN-208BB: SB02; SB03 and SC00.

looking more closely at everything: I was incorrect:; the fw on mine is showing "SC01". The others listed at Samsung SN-208BB Firmware Downloads - Firmware HQ are either the preceding SC00 or "SB..". So maybe what I'm seeing is that there is no later "SC##" to be had, and the "SB##" would be wrong ver of the device? -

It appears that your firmware (SC01) is already newer than that listed on the website (SC00) in which case the updater will do nothing. The info on the website also states that the SC** firmware is for Samsung computers while SB** is for global distribution (which I think means drives sold for use in non-Samsung notebooks).
Why are you worried about the firmware version? Do you have a problem or just want to make sure you are up-to-date?
