    Hi thedreamix, welcome to NBR.

Your English is fine, no problem there. On the other hand, I am afraid my French is nonexistent. Could you translate those error screens and post it here?

If the HDD you are cloning from is 1TB, then most likely the problem is too little space on your new 960GB SSD. Samsung Recovery's Copy Disk feature does not shrink contents of the HDD, so you have to clone to a disk that is larger OR shrink the partitions manually before cloning. You can use Windows Disk Management or Minitool Partition Wizard to shrink partitions. Just don't touch the Samsung Recovery partitions!

The post here has more detail and describes other cloning/installation options for you.

    Thank you for your response.

The error screen : "failed to copy the disc"

The hdd is 1 tb and the ssd is 960gb.

If I schrink partition, I have to schrink the c partition for example? And have a partition unallocated?

Yes, shrink the C partition. Or if you have a separate Data partition, shrink that one. In other words: Shrink the last partition before the Samsung Recovery partitions.

3rd party tools generally break Samsung Recovery Solution (SRS) on the new disk, which is preserved when using the Copy Disk feature in SRS itself.

Clonezilla is the only 3rd party partition tool so far which has been confirmed to preserve SRS, but ONLY when using its Disk Image feature -- as opposed to imaging individual partitions. See this post where @go45cvi confirms that.

But that is based on cloning from a smaller SSD to a larger one. You still have the problem that your 1TB HDD doesn't fit on the 960GB SSD, so you would still have to shrink your Windows (or Data) partition. And even then, I don't know if Clonezilla will understand to move the Recovery partitions into the unallocated space when using a Disk Image -- and whether this will break SRS.

I would recommend you use the Copy Disk feature in SRS (after shrinking your partition to make space) since this has been confirmed by many users to work properly.

Sorry to hear you're having so much trouble with this. My guess is the problem is caused by the three small NTFS partitions just before the Recovery partitions. Those are messy little things created by Windows Update -- which is one reason I always clean install new Windows versions.

I don't know if there is a "proper" way to get rid of them. You can try Windows Disk Cleanup in System mode and select to clean all Windows Update files. Or maybe there is another way to delete them that I don't know. Or you can try to simply delete the partitions manually.

Note: Of course this will make it impossible to roll back your Windows Update. But to my understanding, those rollbacks hardly ever work anyway.

Do you have a larger than 1TB external drive you can use to test cloning, just to see if it will work before deleting anything on your HDD.

I'm afraid I am running out of more things to suggest

I was having issues with the Samsung Recovery cloning on a Samsung ATIV Book 9 Spin. For me what worked was to turn off anti-virus. That fixed one error issue. The other Error issue I had was fixed by formatting the target SSD (which still had other hidden partitions on it), deleting all of the partitions that were already on that drive that had come from another PC. Lastly, what has made cloning to a larger SSD (for me it was from 256GB to 512GB), super easy and fast was to purchase a SSD to USB 3.0 adapter from Amazon (about $20.00).

Unfortunately, I don't have a larger than 1 TB external drive.

Thanks Ace01. I will try with anti-virus disabled.
How do you format the SSD ?

I'm assuming that your target (new) SSD can be externally connected to your laptop via an USB enclosure adapter? If so then just plug it in and in Windows explorer, right click on the drive and click on format. Now if you need to see whether or not your target drive has more than one partition on it (hidden or not), you may want to right click on the windows icon on the bottom left corner of your task bar. Then click on Disk Management. In Disk Management, you will see all of your drives and it will show for each one, all of the partitions each drive has.

    Ok thanks.

I suspect that my USB enclosure adapter is defective. Can you provide a good USB enclosure adapter?

This is the one I purchased from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ZTC-Enclosure...qid=1449696239&sr=8-7&keywords=ngff+enclosure

The one you have, may not be broken. Does the drive not show up in Windows explorer? Does the drive show up as an option in Samsung Recovery? If it shows up in Samsung Recovery as a Disk Copy to option but not in Windows Explorer, then you need to do the following:

    Go to:
    Control Panel
    Admin tools
    Computer[IMG] management
    Disk management

You should see your drive that you can't access. Right click on the drive header and select 'Online'

If it is already online, then assign it a drive letter that isn't already in use.

Now you should see it in your 'My Computer area' and you should be able to access it.

    Thanks for the link.

My ssd shows up in Windows Explorer and in Samsung Recovery but just as i have many errors i just suppose my adapter was defective.

I just reread your first post. I see that you have a full-size SSD. My Samsung Spin, uses NGFF SSD (small chip/card) so that enclosure I linked is for NGFF SSD only.

You mentioned that your laptop wouldn't boot to Windows after installing the new SSD. I'm wondering if you have a black screen and text saying that no operating system or boot drive found? If so, that is what I had after the install. What I did was to hold the power button until the system shutdown. Then I pressed the power button again and everything started and Windows loaded but it did take a few minutes that first time starting Windows on the new SSD as it set things up.

Okay then, try powering down by holding the power button. Wait a few seconds and then power up again.

@Ace01: Thanks a lot for helping out!

@thedreamix: I would recommend you clone by F4 booting into Recovery instead of using the SRS Windows app. That way you rule out any conflicts with Anti Virus or any other background processes in Windows. To be honest, I thought you were already doing that.

As Ace01 mentioned, definitely make sure the SSD is blank before cloning.

Instead of cloning with Disk Copy, you can create a so-called Bootable Factory Image backup on a USB stick (your model probably needs a 32GB stick) then use that stick to put a factory installation on the SSD. Our general guide on that is here. Of course that will not move your data and installed programs onto the SSD.

That guide is in the Ativ Book 8 Owners Thread where dozens of users have posted their experience installing SSDs and cloning the built-in 1TB HDD onto smaller SSDs. The opening post already has several good links.

Yes, I clone by recovery using F4 but i would try with anti-virus disabled lol.

I will try this if cloning failed again.

Finally, I use the method with a USB stick and I succeeded.

Now, I have to reinstall all my programs.

    Thanks for your help.

Thank you for the update. I am sorry to hear you never got the Disk Copy feature to complete -- and I am baffled why that is, since many users have reported using it.

But I am glad to hear you got your SSD up and running with a USB Factory Image backup. Well done for being so persistent! :)

I reinstall all my programs and windows 10 and i have a problem with brightness.

    I can't change brightness with fn+f2 or fn+f3 .

I did all the windows update and samsung update.

edit : I have no problem with brightness. I desinstall intel driver, reinstall windows 10 brightness patch and update graphic card driver.
