My guess would be there is a another screw somewhere likely under the keyboard. I'm not too familiar with Samsungs as they are not sold where I'm located.

I can't comment on the R40 but the ODD in the Samsung X60 is held in by a screw under the keyboard.

Basically, if there isn't a screw on the base which is close to the perimeter of the ODD (which is approximately 5" / 13cm square) then it is most likely under the keyboard.

Anyway, I'll move this thread to the Samsung forum where it is more likely to get input from other Samsung owners.

    Its under the keyboard.

Remove the Screw labelled ODD and all the ones Marked KBD. Remove the KB and the screw is directly above the end of the ODD, near the centre of the laptop.

There are probably some latches along the front of the keyboard which you need to release. See this thread. It relates to another model but I expect the fixings to be similar. Lets us know whether or not that guidance is OK.

Yeah, thanks for that mate. Future reference, there is 3 clips, 1 under the down button, one in the centre of the space bar and one to the left of the left start button. Then the bottom of keyboard lifts up and the entire unit slides down.

I have now replaced the CD/DVD drive with a Philips Slimtype DVD A DS8A1P (As samsung did not support the old one as it "was never put into production" ... apprently. ) however, I am having trouble finding the firmware for it, Vista is giving me the "Code 39" error (drivers missing or corrupt.)

    Can anyone help with this?

    Many Thanks in advance!

Philips says this drive is not theirs. . . this laptop is starting to **** me off!

Which computer (R40)? Does it have official Vista support? Are you running the latest BIOS? (Samsung have provided various BIOS updated for improved Vista compatibility).

The optical drive needs no special driver support. Was the original optical drive a master or slave? (Did it share one IDE channel with the hard disk, or is the HDD SATA).

That's more questions than answers for you.

Yeah it's the R-40 (NPR40X001) and it's out of warranty now.
As for the cabling, I'm not sure because I haven't ripped it to bits (yet) I just slide the drive out and the new one in. I have run all the updates samsung told me to do and the patches, but it did duck all.

    I started a new thread in a more appropriate section;
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=282860
I'll try this out, hopefully it should fix the problem.

    Thanks for you help John!
