    Hi everyone,

I have a brand new Samsung Q45 which came with Windows Vista Home Premium. But all of my other systems are running Windows XP Professional and I have a ton of software that I really rather not purchase new so that it will work with Vista (Office 2003 for example).

I know that Windows XP is an "old" OS but I was wondering if anyone could tell me what the possible disadvantages of installing XP on my new Q45 would be? Has anyone out there installed XP and is doing fine with it? Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Provided Samsung have issued a full set of XP drivers and software for the Q45 then XP should work fine. Check the Samsung download site.

However, you might want to first double-check which of your software won't work with Vista. It's news to me that Office 2003 won't work with Vista - I've been running it under Vista for the past 6 months! I'm sure Microsoft would prefer you to buy Office 2007.

In fact the only software package I have which absolutely refuses to run under Vista is ArcGIS 9.1. I do have Vista's UAC disabled, which helps to make Vista usable.

Maybe I was just under the impression that Office 2003 wouldn't work under Vista. I did a little research and it seems most of the stuff that I would install does work for Vista.

Before I wipe Vista and re-install it with new partitioning I will try and install all the software that I normally use and see if it works. that might be the best thing to do.

You could also set up a dual boot arrangement although there is a bit of tweaking to be done to get dual boot when you install XP after Vista.

I couldn't get Outlook 2003 to work reliably with Vista last time I tried it. Do you use Outlook 2003 John?

No. I hate Outlook such as it won't let me separate the attachments from the mail for storage purposes.

I have used Eudora for the past 8 years. It doesn't try to be so clever so I feel I have some control over my intellectual property.

Thanks for that John...I thought I must have been missing something. I've always stuck with Outlook for syncing the various phones I've had over the years.
