I know there are lots of posts about this, but I am kind of lost in understanding the problems folks are having with their new series 7 chronos laptops.

Understandably the amd graphics aren't as good as optimus in switching but as long as you can force specific programs through the AMD manager (like I do even with optimus on my alienware) it seems like its ok to me. Of course you dont want graphics firing up for youtube videos or anything haha.

Are games like skyrim, civ 3, bf3 playable without problems? They should be with that caliber graphics card.

What is the OpenGL issue, does it not let games to be played or is it for specific programs, etc?

If you're just playing games you probably won't run into it. Only a handful of titles run on openGL graphics instead of Direct3D. The only one that springs to mind right now is RAGE by ID who has always used openGL to make their games. OpenGL however is much more common in productivity software such as photoshop, solidworks, etc. So all of the games you mention run great. Its those other ones that are annoying me.

Thanks for the response. I was just plain confused as to what used open GL and what didn't, I only play real popular stuff and limited productivity software so thats good to know :)

This Nvidia page suggests that AutoCAD likes OpenGL. According to the hardware specs, ArcGIS wants "An OpenGL 1.3 or higher compliant video card is required, with at least 32 MB of video memory, however 64 MB of video memory or higher is recommended."

Personally, I find that the Intel GPU is fine for my CAD and GIS requirements, but I usually only work in 2D.
