My laptop is a NP680Z5E-X01US running Windows 8.1. For the past few days, I have tried to update the Sound Driver using SW Update, but the update always fails. I considered just downloading the Realtek driver, but what I feared is that it would not work as well with my system as the official Samsung driver would. I have tried talking to the Live Chat twice; the first time used Remote Support but all that did was just uninstall SW Update and revert the sound drivers to an earlier version. The second time I couldn't even get a response so now I'm just stuck. If anyone has a way to deal with this issue, it would be much appreciated.

Did you try using the Export option in SW Update to download the installation package and then run it separately?

It might be easier to see any error messages.

The person who did Remote Support did that, but it did not install the latest drivers. How do I see the error messages? Do I need to go to something like the Event Viewer?

Sometimes the error messages pop-up onscreen. The next place to look is in floder c:\Program Files (x86)\Realtek\NICDRV_8169\ (that's the path on my computer but your folder might have a slightly different name) then look in InstallLog.txt.

My file (NP900X4C running Windows 7) contains:
Yours have an additional 5 lines at the start of the file. Unfortunately, there are no obvious clues about what is causing the installation to fail and I can't think of another place to look.

Is there any good reason why you need this update apart from it claiming to be newer? If not, the easiest solution is to ignore it and hope that the next update will be more successful. There's so much that can go wrong when the installation packages get so big.

The only reason I can think of is for security purposes. For example, if the driver has a patch for some security hole(s), I want to have it updated. Other than that, my sound works fine. Just wondering why SW Update has these issues. I had the same problem updating the BIOS but at least that one I could install it myself.
