Seems to be a lot of Series 7 Gamer stuff here - I on the other hand am using the series 5 NP550P7C with the GT650m installed and the Ivy Bridge 3610.

Would liek to see if anyone else has this and their experiences? Google doesnt give much in terms of user feedback.

I think its an OK machine, but runs quite warm. Samsung driver support for the 650m appears to be absent and laptopvideo2go doesnt seem to have an .inf that recognises the card.

    Any other users out there?

I have this laptop and i'm having a real issue with games. It seems the GPU gets to about 85 celsius (this is on any graphical setting, the higher it is the quicker it gets there) and at that point the frame rate will drop to about 5fps until it cools down to somewhere in the 70's.

Is anyone else having this problem? I hope it's not a general issue with the laptop because I expect it to be refunded if it is. a GT650m lagging on minecraft? Doesn't sound right too me...

I am having this exact same problem in a number of games f1, sniper elite v2, cod waw. When the gt650m gets to 87 degrees it drops to single figure fps.
Only happens when its plugged in, no drops in fps when playing of battery (10% less than when plugged in but consistent and no drops), the 650m does not seem to get as warm when of battery.
When I get the lag spike if I remove power lead it jumps right up, only got it last week - happens with original and new drivers from nvidia as well

yes the cooling is not the best on this laptop mine has hit 80 often but has not been an issue, however i now use a basic laptop cooling pad when gaming, this seems to help a little. I might try taking the underside cover off and see if this helps with air flow as im sure the vents under the laptop are to limiting.

I would not mind if it just got hot but the lag spikes is the problem, nachoman when your gaming is it when plugged in and after 30 minutes etc you dont get any lag spikes?
Nachoman what drivers are you using? Have you tried it without the cooling pad?

Ah thank you for the battery tip I shall try that out today. I think we should all be contacting samsung customer support and making them aware of this issue as literally everywhere i've looked (and thats not many places as it's new) has complained about this problem.

Tempted to return it, but I might try a laptop cooler to see if it makes any difference.

Please let me know how you get on with unplugging the lead

nah no lagspikes but then im not a heavy gamer with this laptop as i have a gaming rig .
But as a test i just ran farcry 2 native res and everything turned up and temps hit 86 then removed lower panel and turned the cooler on and temps went down by 10 and stayed at that level.

May be necessary to take the panel off the back as there does not seem to be many vents for the air to get into to cool the laptop with the cooler.
Did you keep it at 86 degrees for a while or just stop it when they reached there. Mine is fine until it hits 88 degrees plugged in then it spikes

was only a quick test and was at that temp for a good 8 to 10 mins, i have upgraded mine with a ssd but i relocated the 1tb drive to the 2nd drive slot this might also help with temps as the center hdd location does seem to be the warmest due to loaction near the gpu

yes i noticed the same. Probably the gpu running in a slightly lower state to save on the power draw while using battery only. Not got time now but maybe change the power management in the nvidia control pannel to max rather than adaptive while using the battery. might be worth checking how much the fps change between powered or battery only.

How do you change it just for just battery, I changed it for when plugged but it still keeps dropping fps when hits 99% load and temp 87-88, the core clock drops to 125mhz for a few seconds before going back up again 950 mhz

yes no choice for nvidia and set win 7 to performance, power, optimised it happens with all of them. Its when clocks reach 87-88 core clock of gt650m drops to 125mhz

I love my NP550P7C but the only problem is the FPS lag and it drives me crazy... I bought a laptop cooler and to be honest it doesn't really help out

I did want to try take the bottom of the case off but once the screw's are undone it feels like I'm going to snap the plastic trying to take the bottom of the case off

I really hope Samsung can maybe fix this in a driver and give us more access to the BIOS

Does anyone know if Samsung do an extended warranty on the laptop? as from all the over heating I'm worried after 2-3 years its not going to be in very good shape

bought a laptop cooler and it dropped temps by a degree or so but it still overheats just takes longer (by 5 minutes). When on battery it does run at 835mhz constantly but every 2 mins on plugged it drops from 900mhz to 125mhz.

I don't think this laptop is listed on the samsung website to get driver support

Extended warranties are available in the UK. One buys a certificate to register on line. I presume that Samsung offer something similar in other countries.

Don't have much to add to the thread but thought I would add my voice to the number of people having problems with this laptop throttling when playing games.

Mine seems to get around 86C when it throttles. Swopping the power plan using between Samsung optimised and High performance seems to help some. However can't see how or why it works!

Do you mean you change it during a game by going back to desktop and then back into the game?

    Using the Fn+F11 keyboard shortcut.

I get the feeling the fan/gpu/temp profiles are all screwed up. Sometimes swopping to Samsung optimized will drop the core down a touch and other times it doesn't.

Hmmm interesting you say that about the Samsung optimized. so I just updated the driver, changed to turbo mode on and changed the windows power setting to high and adjusted the advanced settings so on battery it was max power save and on power was set to max perf or quality, temps just hit 90 and could not detect lag but it was a short test.

I restored computer to state when bought it and using the original drivers the temps seem to stay lower for longer, when the card does get to 86 degrees it losing fps to single figures for a few seconds but then returns to higher levels again. This is on turbo, high performance chosen in the nvidia control panel etc.

Not sure I want to try the beta drivers again

Old drivers or new drivers the problem still occurs with fps being throttled.

I think this laptop runs very warm when gaming, temps going up to 88c and then the card throttles back dropping fps to less than 10 then after a few seconds temp drops to about 80 c then the process continues going up to 88c and then throttling.

I have tried a laptop cooler as well but it does not make any difference.

ok pressing Fn & F11 switches your modes, from what i can see all this does is change your windows power profile. If you open control panels and select power options then switch modes using Fn & F11 you will see the profile change. Turbo being high performance all i did was change the advanced option in control panels & power options. Set all options for plugged in to max power or max performance. I left the nvidia options set to adaptive power management.

Wonder what they think the safe max temp should be for this unit.

Max i had was 90 but this was just the laptop no additional cooling (notebook cooler).

My laptop cooler makes no difference to the unit with 2 fans going, doesnt seem to be much air getting into the machine from them

What program were you using when it was at 90c

I've sent mine off for repair. Should be getting it back early next week and I'll report on whether the problem was solved. As for the samsung repair service I recommend going for it. They send a courier to pick it up next day and say it will be back within a week. Should have it by tuesday.
