Hi. I’m having problems with my X170KM-G laptop and RAM. It works perfectly with 16GB (2x8GB) Corsair Vengeance 2666 RAM, but I have tried to upgrade the ram to 32GB (2x16GB) Corsair Vengeance 3200 RAM, and all I get is a black screen (keyboard lights up) and then it powers off. I have tried using both modules individually but still no luck. I find it highly unlikely that both modules are faulty. I just cannot see what I’m doing wrong. The RAM is supposed to automatically clock to 3200 without any BIOS configuration. Can anyone help me please? Just to add RAM is seated correctly and when I put the 2666 RAM back in it works perfectly again. Thank you!

What happens if you combine a 2666 stick with a 3200 stick?

Could be voltage requirement of the ram in question is too low and the mobo is supplying at higher voltage causing a shutoff in the ram or it has fried the ram
Is it LPX (after the vengence printed on it) ???

Or its a simple case the BIOS needs updating because this was the same issue i had with 4x 8GB sticks, after upgrading the EC and firmware it booted fine. Its teething pains. Something that Clevo needs to get on top of.

It's 1.2 volt ram, most ddr4 is 1.35 volt or higher
    LPX = low power

Hi. Thanks for your reply. This is my first suspicion but I’m unsure how to update the bios. Could I draw in your experience for guidance in this matter please? I currently have BIOS version 1.07.01

Most laptop SO-DIMMS are 1.2 volts. It does not have LPX on it.

Not fully sure as i suspect that each ODM has a different way to flash however PCS told me to flash it this way.

    Code:
    1. Power on and tap the F7 key repeatedly as soon as you turn on the system. This will bring up the boot menu.
    2. Select USB flash drive from the boot menu and press [Enter] to select this option.
    3. This will open the EFI Shell. At the top of the screen, your drives are listed under ‘fs#’, where # is the drive number. Please find the drive number associated with your ‘Removable Drive’, it will be described as a USB Device and should be the bottom most option on the list.
    4. Type the following commands, pressing [Enter] after each and substituting the ‘#’ with the relevant drive number.
    FS#:
    CD <foldername>
    ECFLASH.NSH
the laptop will shutdown and update the EC.
    5. Power the system back on and tap the F7 key repeatedly while laptop boots to re-enter the boot menu.
    6. Select USB flash drive from the boot menu and press [Enter] to select this option. Type the following commands.
    FS#:
    CD <foldername>
    MESET.EFI
    the laptop will restart.
    7. Tap the F7 key while laptop reboots.
    8. Select USB flash drive from the boot menu and press [Enter] to select this option. Type the following commands.
    FS#:
    CD <foldername>
    FLASHME.NSH
the laptop will shutdown and update the BIOS.
    9. Power the system back on. It will display a message that ‘First Boot Conditions have been found’ and ‘CMOS Defaults have been loaded’. Press the Enter key and the laptop will restart
    10. Tap the F2 key to get get into BIOS.
    11. Navigate to Setup then press F9 followed by F10 pressing yes for both questions’

Which slots did you install the RAM into?

RAM with rated speeds past 2933 MHz only work properly in the slots underneath the keyboard. They cause instability issues if installed in the slots under the bottom cover.

Try installing your RAM in the slots underneath the keyboard. That should solve your problem.

Sometimes odd arrangements like 1 and 4 can have better results too.

I thought the x170 prefers master slots to be populated, dimm 3+4. But doesn't hurt to try.
