Yes, if all the parts on the motherboard could be passively cooled by directly exposing them to the air and the fans allowed to breathe as much as possible cooling would get that kind of boost.

However you can't just have it exposed all the time if you intend to move it (if you don't then you could do something like that I suppose if you were careful how you placed it).

Also on the 26th of Jan was when it was formalised ;)

Awesome review, one question: have you (or anyone else?) noticed sluggish screen response times? The notebook check review has 30ms (black to white) & 56ms (50% grey to %80) response times listed which seem like they may be noticeable in a standard FPS. Can you comment on the responsiveness of the screen? (for example if you spin the camera around in something like just cause 3 is it noticeable?).

    Cheers

    Nice review.
I bougth this laptop a few days ago, and i hope you can help me in a few things.

Do you recommend repaste with a CL-LP CPU+GPU?
It's possible overclock the GPU to 1GHz stock?

    Thanks!

I wouldn't worry about repasting necessarily, unless your temperatures look higher than expected (like if it has a bad paste job to begin with). If your temps look good, you might not see too much of a difference by repasting.

You could use something like MSI Afterburner or Nvidia Inspector to overclock the GPU. Every GPU will overclock different amounts compared to the next one, but I would think you should be able to get 1GHz or around there.

    Yep, I agree with Pat.

There are plenty of ways to overclock, but rather than fixate on a frequency, is it performing well?

Is that Coollaboratory Liquid Pro? Great compound. It'll help with temps compared to the stock compound, most likely. It's electrically conductive, so be careful with it!

Not only that but it can react with other metals other than the copper so be careful with it on that front too.

    Hi I need some help.

So I will be returning to univeristy this up coming fall.

I don't know which laptop to buy. I am between either a lenovo t460p w/ i7 nvidia 940mx or this just rebranded as Malibal

    http://www.malibal.com/boutique/pc/configurePrd.asp?idProduct=852

can someone give me futher insight on this. For example noise emission level comparison between the two and total weight comparison (including adapters / without)

Also these are my current configuration of the 2 that I want

    Malibal

The two systems are worlds apart in terms of graphics performance (with the 970M FAR ahead), our listing for the NP8640 does list all the specs for weight and dimensions.

But I specifically want to know how noise emissions are when these two are in comparison. I feel like the malibal would be louder than the thinkpad

which one is better just in the grand perspective of things - not just graphics performance alone. which one do you honestly think would last longer and have less issues?

Autonomy would be greatly better on the Thinkpad too but the clevo one is way more powerful

The Clevo has a superior cooling system so it should run cooler... It will also last longer and will be much better built... Just don't get it from Malibal,.. Get it from XoticPC, GentechPC, LPC-Digital or a Sager reseller.. It will cheaper then Maliabal and you should be able to get the 980M model..

Right. P640RE has a 970m and no 980m option. P650RG would be the 15 inch version with 980m.

So I checked out all these websites and tried my build..

And they all came to different prices I don't know which one is the most reliable and cheapest.

    I opted for windows 7
    500 gb evo ssd
    m.2 ssd sata 250 gb
    16 gb ram
    killer dual wifi/bluetooth thing
    rush build

I'm not sure if I want the optical drive or not

what are everyone's thought about this build? Which website is the cheapest? Which one is most reliable?

    Thanks

Any reason you are getting two SSDs when there are single ones of higher capacity?

Yes, because the ssd options that are either 960 gb, 1tb, or 2tb are out of my budget range and I read somewhere that the 5400 rpm / 7200 rpm tb's are not good

250 + 500 is 750 which is within my budget

RPM drives are still fine. They aren't nearly as fast as SSDs, but are cheap bulk storage.

I guess something I feel concerned about is do the rpm drives make a lot of noise / sound as opposed to SSDs?

Yeah, you can still hear them spin up, while SSDs are silent. It's kind of a personal preference if it bothers you or not, I suppose. Some people can't stand it, some people barely notice it.

Also, if you have the majority of your programs on your C: drive that's an SSD, and you don't have a lot that you would use on your second drive, then you might not be pulling that much data off of that second drive. If your second drive is a HDD, then basically you might not hear it spin up that much. In my case, I'd say 98% of what I run is on my SSD, and I barely need to go to the HDD, so I don't hear it used much. But it just depends again on how you would be using your system, and if you would really be bothered by that.

    I see!

That makes a lot of sense. Currently my laptop has only 286 GB and well I'm pretty much all out of space for storage so thats the reason why I thought maybe one main SSD of 500 GB, while the other 250 GB (also SSD) would just be there as a reserve. And you're right I think I didn't choose the RPM drive because its not completely silent and that bugs me.

If you don't access the HDD for a time it will actually spin down until it is accessed.

If you do end up going with the HDD up front, you could always easily replace it with an SSD in the future. That might allow you to save a little on the drive situation up front, and maybe put your budget towards other upgrades (or just save it).

There is no harm for going for two SSDs if it works out still good value to be fair, it's just worth checking as sometimes it can be cheaper to get a single larger drive than two smaller ones.

So i guess another pretty arbitrary question... which site should I purchase it from for the best bang for the buck? Or does it depend/ is situational?

There are a few places that sell the p640 model (just maybe under different names for it). Shop around and see if anybody has a better deal, or free promo items, or maybe something like having a better warranty. There are a few reps that hang around here that you might be able to send direct messages to for questions, as well as reaching out to companies through their normal channels (websites, phone, email, etc...). Just see who might have the best offer for what you are looking for, I suppose.

I've bought a cheap set of heatsinks (in fact the only small size heatsinks I was able to find in Bangkok) and squashed them as much as possible but they still touch the back cover as there is just 3-4mm between the SSD and the cover. I'm afraid this could crack the SSD if I would drop the laptop and it will fall exactly on that corner.
Anyway the heatsinks lowered the temperature for about 10 °C as the current temperature is 70°C while usually being about 80.

When I plug an external monitor into this laptop, I can get both to work at the same time, but the monitor cannot be the only active display. The screen goes black every time I choose to only display on screen 2 (external monitor).

Nvidia and Intel driver updates didn't help
edit: as it turns out, it was the monitor... which is weird because I do not have this issue with any other monitors.

That is an odd one, maybe down a to a sleep option or something in the menu of the display?
