    Man, I'm Korean as well.

I just tried out Ubuntu and it looks good but I can't seem to update anything..

and this sudo command and all are so confusing.. I better take time learning all this.. I might type wrong things and mess up the laptop.

All this rain nowadays, depressing, huh.

Are you getting an error when you update? If you're using the GUI and the update manager, you can just do "sudo apt-get update" and "sudo apt-get upgrade" from terminal. That seems to fix most updating problems I have when using the GUI.

For some clarification- sudo is "Super User Do". Think of it like running Windows in a limited account, but needing to elevate with an administrator login when installing software/changing system files. It's bumping you up to root-like access for a limited time to run that command. Other linux distros use su instead of sudo, as it just logs you in to superuser (aka, root).

Don't worry about breaking things too much, but if you're worried, you can always run a livecd instead so you can't do anything bad.

I did try sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get upgrade, but I always seem to get the 403 forbidden error regardless...

I tried changing the server to main, US, or Korea, and they all throw the same error on the terminal...

Are you behind a firewall or proxy server? That's the only reason you'd get a 403 (that, or your network admin has specifically blocked those ports/IP's).

    I experienced hell today.. Awful..

Anyways, I got my sudo apt-get upgrade to work..

I have no idea, I changed nothing but all of a sudden it works now.

So all is good, I'm going to set up a dual boot :D

    Hi all,

I was wondering if there were any issues with running linux (say, ubuntu) on a p150hm with the new radeon 6990m graphics card? Anyone happen to try this yet? I've ordered said setup from Malibal (very excited, and they have been an awesome company to work with already by the way), and am super curious if there will be much difficulty getting a linux partition running on it. Thanks very much!

    cheers.

Can't say anything about the 6990M since I have an nvidia card, but the rest of the hardware should work fine.

Just use the official AMD Linux binary drivers, we have the set that goes with the 6990m and it works just fine. You'll just have to DL them from AMD.

Im happ to report 2 things :D

    1) After forcing vesa mode on boto i finally got the livecd to boot and then install, since i have the GTX580M version i was having the booting issue during modprobe. After install loaded the NVIDIA Drivers and all is well. DVI and HDMI all work as expected as well.

    2) The intel driver does work along with the Built in Intel BT module (combo card) i had to enable power states for the BT module in the BIOS before it would power on duering boot.

Awesome! Can you describe the process you used to do this and what distro you used? I've been trying to get linux mint 11 to install on my 580m laptop for a couple weeks now and I've never been able to figure it out.

    Thanks :D

What trouble specifically are you having with it? I've found Ubuntu and Fedora to be simple install and go operations for my P150HM. Mint shouldn't be a big difference installation wise.

Well, the live CD won't even boot. The live CD tries to modprobe the card with the noveoau driver, which fails so bad it stops the boot process. I don't even get to a menu, all I get is GRUB. I've heard things about forcing vga mode (aka not using any video driver) on boot but I've never figured it out how to do it. It looks like tobias has, though.

Mint has the same issue with the video driver as ubuntu (same base) but if you boot with the "vga=781" option it will work , alternativley use the "nomodeset" extra options in the kernel command line before you boot into the live cd.

I have indeed got it working. BUT i think the best solution and the easiest by far to explain is this:

Download the ALTERNATE iso NOT the standard and install in text mode instead, also selecting the options to install updates. This will install the NVIDIA driver and when Ubuntu boots it will use this when the install is complete.

    Link to the alternate ISOS:

The only distro I've gotten to work on my P170HM with GTX 580M is Sabayon 6. Tried Gentoo and Arch Linux but can't can't seem to get ethernet or wifi working with Bigfoot killer 1103 card. Sabayon boots and installs just fine. Everything works out of the box. Since wifi works, haven't checked to see if ethernet is working.

I've been running Gentoo, ( Funtoo actually), since I received my P150HM/6970M/Intel 6230, several months ago, without issue. I use the open source radeon driver, and everything that I use on the system works fine, (CPU/GPU/wired/wireless ethernet/webcam). I don't game, although all my desktop effects and the Doom III (Linux port) work fine, so 3d performance of the open source radeon driver is sufficient for me. I also don't use bluetooth, (but it appears to be working correctly), or the fingerprint reader because I don't have a need for them.

    Good Luck..

That's odd. Ethernet should work out of the box regardless of the distro. Did you upgrade the ethernet driver by any chance? I believe one version flashed the firmware or something which broke ethernet on Linux. Flashing to a newer/older version fixed it for me. Not sure if you have the same problem.

I think my problem was that I couldn't find the jmicron driver for the ethernet chip and modprobe it, still wet behind the ears when it comes to linux.

I have a PH151M, and a puzzling problem with Ubuntu 11.04 (installed today): a single key does not work - namely function-f5 (lowering the system volume). Strangely enough the other function keys work fine, i.e. fn-f3 (mute) and fn-f6 (increase volume). What kind of error could this be?

I cant seem to get the inbuilt microphone to work, When recoding- all I get is static noise. If I clap my hands, there is no change to the recorded "noise" its kind of just not working :(
Speakers are working fine... just not mic.
    Ubuntu 10.04LTS
Any help with this would be highly appreciated!

I recently switched from P170HM to a P150HM and have had great success running Pinguy OS and Ubuntu 11.10. Tempted to try Arch Linux, Gentoo is a pain for me to get a decent custom configured kernel to run properly. Slowly figuring out the ins and outs of Linux. So far it's been good to me. I have wireless connection to my router via an Intel 6300 wifi card, laptop came with a 6230 which I swapped out. Sensors work, but since SSD's don't have a temp sensor, lm-sensors report it's temp as 126 degrees celsius.

After about 10 attempts with dual booting Win7 and various forms of Ubuntu, I did a complete switch and removed windows and got ArchLinux working. I have to say, the latest install was flawless compare to the last time I attempted Arch. Some thing I need to still get working are the Nvidia driver....and actually I think that is it. I was tempted to install Gentoo, having done that for my old iMac years ago but didn't think the amount of optimization vs time spent would be worth a negligible difference in performance. Arch is pretty darn slim and takes like 15 seconds to boot up (take that Win7 or Ubuntu for that matter!) Hmmmm...what else? Here's hoping that I can get a few games to keep me occupied and can get the video editing software going well. (moving from Premeire to Cinelerra is not super fluid).

I found I was having a lot of trouble with Wine games and actually Linux-native games like Warsow. I assume you are on 64-bit Arch, and if that's the case, you will probably need to download the lib32 Nvidia drivers. I forget what exactly they are but I think lib32-nvidia-utils, and you might need another one or two. But that got everything working perfectly for me.

Yeah wine on a 64bit system was a bit of a PITA. Finally figured that out though. Am happy to have 60 fps flying around Azeroth in WoW though! Also got my Adobe Premiere in VirtualBox, which was the only other real thing as I have projects I will need to access.

One thing I've found pretty helpful to use for gaming is PlayOnLinux. Not for it's installers (some work, others don't), but just for the ability to install programs to their own sub-directory, and it's amazingly helpful and easy way to switch Wine versions with a few clicks of a button. Maybe you can do that normally, but I never learned, and POL makes it so easy.

Has anyone tried the latest Linux kernel with 16GB of ram? Does it detect it automatically and install the correct drivers or do you still need to install PAE kernel for 32bit?

    Hi,
So I've been trying to run archlinux on this laptop and I have encountered an incredibly annoying issue with wireless internet connection. I'm using wicd and I constantly get "unable to get IP adress error". Sometimes it connects using dhclient instead of dhcpcd but connection is still intermittent and drops after a very small period. Has anyone managed to get fully working wireless connectivity? if so what clients are you using? and what settings have you modified/customized?

NB: I am using the nl80211 driver instead of wext

    Hello everybody
    I have this Hardware: i7-2820QM - 8GB (2x4GB) - HD6970M - 500GB@7200rpm (Momentus XT) - FullHD Glare on my Clevo P150HM

as I try to install K/U/buntu 11.04 / 11.10 I have problems with the graphic card that start flashing for some seconds and then regains control.

After installation first thing I do is installing new drivers with JOCKEY (additional drivers) so I replace radeon with fglrx.

The computer seems ok but after some time I have Xorg that freeze.

I can't even switch to other tty...
but if I press special keywords (like ALT+R SIST+S/B/H ecc) I see that computer execute my commands...

Has anybody experienced this kind of problems? Any idea on how to solve ?

OK, almost everything seems to work out of the box...

First, I just wanted to say that I find myself extremely disappointed with Ubuntu 11.10 and the Nvidia Linux drivers :(.

I don't have the stock wireless card but the intel 6230 card, that also works out of the box. I have only connected to a close wireless network for an hour, so can't comment on stability issues. Bluetooth also works out of the box.

The PAE kernel is automatically installed with the 32-bit version if more than 4GB of RAM is detected.

The thing that doesn't work is laptop screen recognition. This is pretty important in applying color profiles... My computer registers the screen as "Unknown" and nvidia-settings can see my CRT screen, but lists the laptop screen as "LEN". Can't even verify if I have the right screen except the screen's vivid colors and brightness burns my eyes out ;p.

Apparently, there's either a bug with Ubuntu 11.10 or nvidia linux drivers such that the colord daemon and the binary linux drivers won't communicate with each other. Both teams are laying the blame on each other, although people are saying they did not have this issue in Ubuntu 11.04 or 10.10.

I've already tried dispwin, and that just messes up the colors.

People are claiming that there are no problems when using Linux Mint 12. I don't have time to try that now, will probably try it after finals next week.

If it says LEN then you have the right screen (95% matte). Because its a purpose built screen it doesn't quite have the full info in the screens firmware, but you should be able to just put a calibration on it in linux.

    That's good to know.

However, loading the ICC profile with dispwin just turns my screen grey. And looking at colord through System Settings only lists the camera. I think the latest nvidia drivers are incompatible with xrandr 1.2 :(.

I was able to see the laptop screen with colord on liveUSB though.

Just wanted to post this: finally found a breakthrough for booting a linux livecd that tries to use nouveau on a 8150 with a 580m. All you have to do is press F6 to edit the boot options, press ESC, then type in the following after the -- at the end of the boot options:

    Code:
    nouveau.modeset=0
This boots linux in VESA mode, which allows you to install your distribution. Install the nvidia drivers after install, and you're good to go. :D

EDIT: you may end up having to use this as a boot option post-install. To do this, press e to edit boot options from the GRUB screen, and add this on a new line on the bottom.

Glad to hear it worked for you, I tried installing a 580M in my laptop to compare it to the 6990M, all flavors of ubuntu died during bootup. Ended up sticking with the 6990M. I also attempted the same experiment on my P170HM with the same results so it definitely wasn't an issue with the P150HM. Right now I have Pinguy OS 11.04 installed and it runs beautifully. Tried Arch Linux but couldn't get gnome 2 to install, not too crazy about gnome 3.

Just wanted to post a few things I've discovered so far using linux on these things.

I'm currently running Xubuntu 11.10 on my p150hm like a dream. Everything installed quickly, and I haven't had the slightest problem.

I've also installed Arch and Crunchbang, but Xubuntu has the simplest configuration out of the box. I also found that Xubuntu + AwesomeWM gives me nearly 3 hrs of battery life, and uses less then 500mb of ram with tons of terminals and browser tabs open. The temps seem to hover around 35 degrees Celcius for the gpu.

I strongly recommend installing Xcalib to install your .icm profile. It loads instantly on boot, since it doesn't try to overwrite video memory like windows.

Anyways, here's a screeshot of my current set up. Happy coding!
