So I recently sent my laptop back to HIDevolution to have them swap out the GTX 980m's in SLI for the G-sync versions, but when it came back I noticed that the GPU (only one of them) one runs at around 50c when sat in windows doing nothing but the other (and one that is giving me problems) is spiking to 70+ when supposedly idle and doing very little, this isnt normal is it!?

Not really, might wanna check if the fans are kicking in. Worst case it might be a bad paste job.

Yep all three fans are kicking in and CPU and other GPU are all relatively cool.

Just this one card that sits around 70c when idle not overclocked at all.

Definitely worth checking the paste job, as bloodhawk mentioned. You might want to check with your reseller to see what they might say as well.

Tbats weird I just opened up my case let my laptop cool down rebooted it and played xcom 2 for a little bit and the both cards seem to have stabalized temps of 44c ish at idle. Must have been some software that was running. Still weird though.

Just to be on the safe side, do a 15 minrun of Unigen Heaven or Valley.

If you reseat the cards, make sure to read over this post - http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...71dm-p775dm-thermal-paste-replacement.789825/ . I'm going to recommend this as required reading for every Phoenix post (the machine not the user) mentioning higher GPU temps.

While it might not be the actual problem, the fact we're seeing more and more questions regarding the same problem on the Phoenix... well, it makes me wonder.

The second gpu seems to be an issue on this model because the heatsink is so small.

While you expect the 2nd to run a little hotter you don't expect it to be wildly out of range.

This is not the first time I see this issue. Every time I see such a post, I thank God I sold my old P870DMG which had Dual 980Ms in SLI and got a single 980 GTX. less headaches

but on to your concern, the 2nd GPU is always going to be a bit hotter than the first one, that is the bad design of the 2nd GPU heatsink unfortunately but they shouldn't be anything that prevents you from running the laptop. I would repaste both GPUs with IC diamond again and see the results.

I'd agree you'll have an easier and more consistent experience with a single 980, and not have to worry about possible SLI compatibility or performance issues.

I think every laptop with SLI I've seen, in recent memory at least, always has some temperature difference between the graphics cards. That temperature gap will vary from model to model on how they are designed, as you mentioned. But that is pretty common though.

heck, even on my Origin PC Millennium Desktop I had a 10C temp difference between my 1st 980Ti vs the 2nd 980Ti and that's in a case with superb cooling.

Yes, the secondary gpu cooling solution on this machine sucks. Plain and simple. you can play without OC and ull be fine but be ready to see your secondary gpu hit the mid 80s in demanding games.

Just download intel XTU and go to Clevo Control panel and set the fan profile to (overclock) it should help.

There is nothing wrong with your laptop is just the secondary gpu cooling solution was poorly designed. As i said before, i think when they made this laptop they focused mainly on the GTX 980 vs dual 980ms

Yeah I just ran a 15 minute run of uniengine and whilst 1 GPU reached the 80's the issue with the GPU's not downclocking when idle appears to have disappeared, when idle 1 is now running at 55 and the other at 48. So I'm happy with that, must have been some piece of software causing issues.
