Agreed 2 SSDs is massive overkill surely 1 SSD and 2 x 500GB Storage would give you best all round option

A lot of folks have multiple SSD's in a RAID. The speed is immense. Whether it's overkill, is up to the customer, no?

Yeah it is up to the the owner, but imho its not good value for money.
Dont worry I wasnt starting a flame war, just merely stating my opinion which is what these forums are here for :)

TBH I was very keen on getting the SSD for my lappy but after chatting with the guys at Kobalt it was suggested that the 920 with overclocking would be better for my circumstances. So I patiently wait for the BIOS to come with the OC features working correctly. If is does not happen then I made the wrong choice and I would have much prefered the 820 and 1SSD and 2 500GB I quoted.

What would be a waste, is to get multiple SSD's and not put them in a RAID, i.e just to get enough storage space. Then the speed of the SSD would mostly go to waste. Putting them in RAID to up the speed is not waste; it works.

Yeah the SSD's are going in Raid.

The way I saw it is I need 150gb storage on my main partition just for apps and OS. So 2 80GB SSD's in Raid was actually cheaper then 1 160GB SSD.

And the speed will make sure the HD is not the slowest link.

Memory and CPU can be upgraded later but I really wanted both of them a notch higher.

Only the benchmarks will tell if I made the right choice but for HD video editing I think raid SSD's will be right for me.

This is the beauty of buying a Clevo machine over one of the preconfigured mainstream machines, the customisation of the build to suit each individuals needs is priceless to be honest

The only problem with RAID SSD's is the lack of TRIM support.

Aye, that's true. But the best quality SSD's - like the Intel's - show remarkably little degradation over time anyway. You can get by quite well without TRIM.
And my guess is it won't be long before the TRIM/RAID issue will be solved.

I noticed in the manual that to replace the upper ram chip you remove the CPU heat sink. The CPU appears to be socket'd. Thus easily upgraded, unlike in the old days where Laptop CPUs could not be upgraded.

So is it socket'd and thus just a plugin to change the chip?

ES are usually just as good in regards to that, as they're often sent to companies for testing/review before a release.

    Hmm,
So would this be a viable plan that makes sense. Sell my OEM 720QM and buy the 920XM ES to replace it? I don't want a buggy, crashing, overheating machine, if ya get my drift here.

My X9100 was a QS, and I had absolutely no issues with it running at stock at all. Only issues I have had was the machines it was in having thier own issues!

If the changeover was affordable, then that would likely be a viable route in the future if you decided you needed the power.

The 720s sell for around $300 and the ES 920s are a little over $500, seems like I would have $200-$250 in the upgrade. Sounds like a good deal if the processor works well.

end of the day you take your chance with an ES, you have no warranty and are not covered the any kind of sales act as selling ES chips is actually against the LAW

so if you get one, be aware that it is very much a case of buyer beware

Since this thread is kinda slow today, I'll ask a question!

Does the esata/USB port supply power when the Laptop is shut down but plugged in?

I've seen this on other Laptops and was just wondering if the 8120 does it?

I just got a kewl Razer Mamba that needs charging and that would be an awesome feature for it.

My 8120 will be here on Wednesday!!

The M980NU didn't, it could be different for this, but MOST laptops won't do this so as not to exhaust the battery.

tbh there isnt alot of difference

The 285 vs the 280 isnt alot of change gameplay wise, in syntethics is about 10% faster but its not noticeable

Cpu with the i7 is much stronger then the qx9300, but again in games you dont notice it

my advice to anyone with the M980Nu would be dont change until the new fermi cards arrive

I've seen a few laptop BIOS this sparse, its nothing to worry about.
Oh and for anyone who was interested in the sound tweak I mentioned previously, the subwoofer active option IS available with the Dolby Tab if you have the Clevo customised Realtek drivers installed.

If you've got Clevo's drivers in, even when the speakers are set to stereo, you can set the 'sub' to takeover on bass and lower mids.
I'm using Win7 right now, but to find the option go into Windows playback devices, right click speakers then go to properties. Go to the Dolby tab, tick natural bass then set it to 5/6.

    Job done.

    Helps a lot.

I don't have many nicks to complain about.

    But...

The Sound output would be one, as well as the sound quality. The KB is a little mushy, and the edges of the Laptop are a little edgy where your arms rest on it.

Would have preferred a Flat finish as well.

But the rest of it is awesome. Runs cool as well! I was worried about that.

Yep pretty much covers it, try the bass tweak, it helps the sound side and turns it from tinny rubbish to listenable (well if you're not an audiophile anyway).

It's interesting that you say this. I get this flickering when I start the game and then the Game Loads and I don't have any more issues. It takes a while to settle down. I just get a back flickering screen for like 30 seconds and then the game loads. Is that what yours does?

hmm nope, i have this problem the full time... i test it with Street Fighter 4..
...the Game starts..the first screen with the logo from Nvidia dont flicker..the next logo beginns to flicker after that the last logo dont flicker and then the full game flickers all the time.. it dont stop after several seconds..

that behavior make me think its a driver problem.
what drivers do you use les garten?

EDIT: if i run 3DMark Vantage in SLI it flickers too

Mine doesnt flicker, beyond any microstutter that might be noticeable during low frame periods. Could be something like a damaged/crimped SLI cable or a screen issue.
On the other hand I had a memory stick that went the way of the dodo so my own issues lol
