I'll post up a few pictures. I will be comparing it to my old W230SS 13.3" since that's what I upgraded from. New one is the one on the left obviously
-
Here's a picture with the back cover off. I have to admit that it's much more of a pain to get the cover off compared to the W230SS. You'll need to take out all the back screws. Then flip over the laptop and pop off the keyboard to take out another screw underneath. After that you'll need to carefully pry the cover around the edges with a plastic pry. I'd hesitate to use anything metal. Be careful around the intakes and exhaust. While the laptop has a sturdy build you can tell that the plastic is a hard brittle type. If you apply too much pressure you'll snap it easy.

A few quick notes.
This laptop came from Sager and is able to be undervolted at this time. I ran with a -70 undervolt just to get started and to see if it was possible. So far it's running well. All benchmarks will be with this undervolt applied.
I ran 3DMARK TIMESPY
Balanced Mode 8298
CPU TEMP 79
GPU TEMP 74
Performance Mode 8561
CPU TEMP 80
GPU TEMP 76
Nvidia GeForce 2070 Super Maxed out at 118Watts
CineBench R15
Balanced Mode CPU 1407cb
Balanced Mode OPENGL 133.09
Performance Mode CPU 1503cb
Performance Mode OPENGL 130.42
CineBench R20
Balanced Mode 3036 pts
Performance Mode 3218 pts

CPU was not power limited in Performance Mode. Max Boost Clock was 4.73GhzLast edited: May 15, 2020Mr. Fox likes this. -
Tip for you.
Use a guitar pick as the prying tool to remove back cover....won't scratch and not strong enough to break things.Lzealot likes this. -

The Ifixit kit includes those picks and is very handy for this sort of thing

I have a set that I use. It was just an observation that if you try and cheat w a small flat screwdriver you'll Mar the plastic easy. It's a stronger but more brittle plastic compared to my older sager.

The plastic has always marked IMO even back to the p150em.
-
The older Clevo's like the D900T or D900F were of the same plastic like this one. They had a reinforced square frame though. They always had nice panel covers to get to the components that you could upgrade. My W230ss also has a nice panel to remove to get to the components. After years of easy access to getting the internals this one was definitely more of a pain. You really have to want to get to the bottom. I have a 1TB SSD on order that I'm not looking forward to installing lol. I probably should of just ordered it to avoid the hassle, but I thought my older spare would fit. Turns out it's msata and not pciex4.
With that being said I don't miss the weight. The 230W power brick is just slightly larger and heaver than the older 120W power brick for my w230ss. The W230ss and this 17" have exactly the same height dimensions and almost has almost the same looks, but the panel was much easier to remove on the w230ss.to get to the drives and memory etc.... -
Tonight I was able to take some time to play around with undervolting. It is definitely unlocked at this time for the 10th Gen CPU. . I'm currently running at -100 millivolt.
There seems to be a performance hit when you undervolt due to the chip behavior. You can get lower thermals, but since the chip current throttles above 70C and the chip will run above 70C even with the undervolt you will lose some performance.
With the 115W gpu in this thing I"m not sure if there's any benefit in fan noise when gaming. It is much quieter on fans when surfing though. Before I had to put the machine in quiet mode to get the fans to spool down. -
Does the second NVME slot on that support a full length NVME drive? It looks like it only supports two shorter ones.

What do you guys have for your "Processor Core Iccmax" on XTU? Mine is set to 165.00A, which is higher than the default I think.
-

Take your current limit and times it by the voltage to get an idea.
At 165a at 1.2v your cpu is capped at 198 watts with that limit. At 1.3v that's 214 watts. -
I see. So for my case, is it better to tone it down a little? Thanks for the info!
-
The name of the math is "Ohms Law", you can google it up, it's pretty simple.
It's also pretty useful.
My IccMax is set to 145 and I have not tinkered with it, maybe when I'm more used to the sitchiation if'fn ya know what I mean. -
I'll check mine in a bit. I believe it's 145 also. So far undervolt has lead to better performance for even though I'm losing some clock speed. Runs slightly slower but longer.

I see, thanks guys! Another quick question. I was thinking of getting another pair of memory sticks. I saw some manufacturers are offering 3200mhz ddr4 sticks on their i710875h laptops. I thought comet lakes only support 2933 sticks or can they actually run at 3200?

I'm not really sure what benefit you would get from the faster memory. If someone has both sticks and ran some tests we could see

Minimum frame rates and 99th percentile frame times so frame time consistency is one thing.

Just got mine in. Repasted it, changed the thermal pads and threw in my other ram stick.
Cinebench R20 I got 3650
Timespy - 8645 / GPU - 8458 / CPU - 9887
Will run more tests later. Anything anyone wants to see? -
What ram and what are you running for C: hardware wise ? -
I'm running Patriot 2666 memory. Came with a Samsung 500GB PM981. Running the 10875H and RTX 2070S. I will say that my temps are a good bit higher than his. Might take it apart again and make sure that the cooler mounting is on on tight, as that seemed like it was stopping short. So far sitting at 86c for the GPU under a long gaming session and 90c for the CPU, in performance mode the CPU hits 100c and thats with an undervolt.

Also of note, XTU doesn't seem to apply the undervolts correctly. I say correctly cause if you apply one too large it will cause a bluescreen, but it doesn't flag the system as having an IA Offset. Doing so in the bios did, and also helped temperatures.
My keyboard also has an odd clicking on the left hand side where you can hear it tapping the metal under it. No idea what thats about. -
I want to also point out, I have had 7 system halts/blue screens since getting this. First two were on the first start up (before windows setup finished), and the rest just randomly when not really doing anything. Sometimes it would just seem to go to sleep from inactivity, but would have to be powered on with the power button. I seem to have the worst luck with HIDevolution.

I just ran Ark for a few minutes to get a good base for temps (don't judge!)
I left it in entertainment mode so it limits the CPU to 55W max.
CPU temps under game load are around 82-83C MAX temp was 89C
GPU temps average 68C and MAX temp was 73C
i tried putting my 13.3 laptop cooler under the fans and plugged it in. It dropped my CPU temp to about 75C. That's a pretty nice drop. It did nothing for the fan noise though. With the 115W 2070 Super your not going to get it quiet! Power saver mode does limit the GPU to 80W as long as you don't mind the loss of fps. -
-
Ewww, Ark
The game I was playing with the extremely high temps was Mafia 3. Other games seemed more in line, and in entertainment mode the temps were a bit better, though the clock speeds were around 4GHz. Going to have to toy around with it a bit. Will probably take it apart again after work to make sure I have good contact with the cooler and the GPU/CPU.
As for the 2070, I had a P775 with a 1080 in it that blew this thing out of the water in terms of performance, all while running cooler. So I definitely think there is something up with the temps as its in the 80s whenever I'm gaming. -
This thing beats my i7 7700k desktop with a desktop 1080 in it with no problem. What did you do to that p775?!?!
I'm just glad undervolt works with XTU, I haven't tried throttlestop at all. This thing without an undervolt would be ugly in temps. I'm hoping this doesn't get patched out.
Quiet Mode CPU 15W GPU 115W
PowerSaver Mode CPU 35-45W GPU 80W
This mode seems to have something going on. CPU Is Current Limited and Also Thermal Throttles. Doesn't do this on entertainment mode..
Entertainment Mode CPU 45W-55W GPU 115W
Performance Mode CPU45-55W w/107W Boost to a toasty 90C for cooking purposes GPU 115W -
I don't think offsetting in XTU is working. In your own picture above, HWInfo doesn't have anything for IA Offset, which it normally would with XTU. If you set it in the bios, it does set your IA offset, and I did notice a drop in my temps.
Only think I did with the P775 was repasted and undervolted the 1080. The 2070S does beat it in Timespy, but it loses to it in FS.
I haven't touched Power Saver yet.
I am now convinced its simply that game that does it to my CPU, which in turn cooks the GPU. Tested again Mafia 3, HellBlade and Shadow of War, Mafia 3 still significantly higher than the other two. All in Performance mode as well. -

An offset should show in IA offset, which in your screenshot is 0. You can set it in the bios under the overclocking menu. I'll show a screenshot when I get home.

Heres the screenshot with the offset. https://imgur.com/wry8qVq
No idea how to make images work on this. -
While not the best way, I'm glad XTU is not locked out from undervolting. It would be a PITA for temps.
I that screen shot might have been when I had removed the undervolt to check temps. I tend to do one with it and one without just to see where my temps go.
-
Thats interesting. Changing my offset in XTU does nothing for me. But in my bios I have tons of overclocking features I can mess with. We should be on the same bios. Per CPU-Z my bios is 1.07.01, whats yours?

I did grab mine direct from sager, you got yours from HID right? -
Yeah thats interesting. I have a slightly older bios but I have a huge overclocking menu available on mine.

On the bios. We have two machines from hid with different bios versions. Mine from sager had a newer version but is locked for overclocking. I'm able to undervolt with xtu without a problem.
