I am going to buy this notebook next year. Which RAM do you suggest (8 GB module)? There is so much price difference (from less than 100 € to more than 300 € - Crucial for example) that I am really confused... I couldn't find a specific test to compare them...

Nice setup. It's a HM67 chipset. So far there are no settings in the bios for overclocking the CPU.
The ram is made by Samsung and the HDD is made by Seagate I believe. At least that is what came in mine.

Are you talking about the difference between 1333MHz to 1600MHz to 1866MHz?

There's about a 3-5% increase in performance moving from step to step.

Honestly I'd suggest sticking with the 1333MHz right now and springing the cash you'll be saving for other upgrades. Most noticeable upgrade you could do is probably an SSD.

No, I am talking about the name... Samsung, Crucial, Corsair... they are so different in price and I wonder if there is also a big difference in performance... I am going to buy myself the sodimm because they are totally overpriced if you order them with the notebook.

There are no big differences in performance. Just in the storage size. Instead of buying a 8 GB module (which is very expensive) you should buy two 4 GB modules (which are cheap). Since the P180HM has three RAM slots you can get up to 12 GB for a very fair price. If you need more than 12 GB in total it will get expensive.

There won't be a significant difference in speeds. They'll have possibly better timings, but other than that there isn't much differentiation. I wouldn't be surprised if there was less than 1% difference between them.

Thanks ... I thought so because I found a test and indeed the difference is really minimal... I still wonder why the RAM is so expensive if you order it with the Clevo reseller... I can buy 24 GB (8X3) for 210 €! The reseller wants more than 900 €!

No, it's probably not worth it to get two SSD's in RAID 0. You'd lose TRIM support for garbage collection and two SSD's striped together wouldn't give you a noticeable real world speed increase compared to one. If you're doing some application that requires a lot of read/writes, like video encoding- maybe, but for day to day use or gaming, probably not. I'd say go with the SSD for the OS and a larger HDD for storage, as it's the best price/performance option.

Yep. Average for crossfire on 6990's in 3DMark11 is ~6500, so you're right where you'd want to be on that.

That's a good question indeed (and I don't know the answer). My guess is that not every 8 GB DDR3 SODIMM module is compatible with the P180HM. Perhaps you could post the exact model name of those cheap 8 GB modules which you have found? Afterwards probably someone here would be able to say if they are compatible with P180HM or not.

The Corsair Value set costs in Germany 69,55 €... The GeIL 61 €. The most expensive is the Crucial with 292 €.

Well, I have confirmed what was posted before: the 11.11 Catalyst drivers give BSOD on startup. I am currently running on Catalyst 10.10, and device manager shows driver version 8.902.0.0. Does anyone know of a better alternative to what I am currently running? I am contemplating downloading the 12.1 beta CCC and trying it out. With my current config I am only getting high 30s to low 40s FPS in Skyrim, and RadeonPro only shows 1 card being utilized.

12.1 does work. It's a bit more difficult to uninstall though. AMD still does not have a proper driver/CAP out for Skyrim yet. The best thing you can do is disable CFX in CCC and that will stop the negative crossfire scaling. With 12.1 beta you should be able to max out Skyrim on a single 6990 pretty easily.

Do you mean this one: Corsair Memory ? 8GB DDR3 SODIMM Memory (CMSO8GX3M1A1333C9) ? Well, to me it looks compatible with P180HM (but I am not an expert in RAM issues).

Perhaps you should ask one or two resellers what they think about using it in a P180HM. As mentioned by PM, EvolutionX is known for supplying Clevos with any component of your choice, even if it is not listed on their homepage. So if I were you, I would send EvolutionX a mail asking if they could deliver the P180HM with that particular RAM or if they can think of any reason why it shoud not be used in a P180HM...

    Yes, it is...
Well, with my old Clevo I used very cheap RAM and they were totally OK... never had one single problem. I did contact Evolution X and they seem very supportive (I was asking for different hard drives)... I found out that Avadirect is selling this Notebook with the Corsair, Kingston. Mushkin and Crucial memory. They seem to be all compatible...

    AMD Catalyst? 12.1 Preview driver

Official release for the new 12.1 preview of catalyst control center. 11.11 was giving BSOD, but so far everythin is working great with this release. Will update with any issues.

    Hello everyone!

I have just joined the site officially today because it was this thread along with a few others that helped me decide on purchasing the Sager NP8180 / Clevo P180HM. I was attempting to purchase last night from Malibal.com but kept getting an error during the final Checkout page. I'll be contacting my bank when they open because I think they're the culprits then I'll probably place my order over the phone to try to also get a Notebook-Reviews-Member-Discount.

I understand I must have 5 posts in order for the discount to be valid so if its ok I may ask a few questions I have in the following posts. Maybe someone can answer some of these... Thank you all for helping me discover this amazing laptop!

One of my questions was about the Display Upgrade: Spyder 3 Elite Professional Color Calibration. Do you guys feel like this is a worth-while upgrade?

I dont know if this matters but I will be doing some major gaming on this laptop while hooked up to a 55" 3D-TV. Even if its not hooked up to the 3D-TV I will be AT LEAST playing games on this laptop while having it hooked up to a 46" LCD which is in my Game Room... But I will be playing a lot on the laptop itself when necessary...

From previous posts (I've read them all) I've realized that some of the pics are a little missleading concerning the front vents showing the internal Blue LEDs. Are there any other companies that we know of that would maybe do some custom work like that? Even after I've purchased from another company? I'm buying from Malibal and already getting the custom Blue LED on the lid where the normal RED tribal logo goes. I think it will look beautiful, but even more so if it looked like in the picture :D

Unless im mistaken, the color calbration only works on the laptop monitor. If you are using external displays it will do nothing for you.

This is my first Gaming Laptop ever, and my first in a LOOONG time to decide to come back to PC-gaming. The Xbox360S and the PS3 will finally get to rest more often then they're used to. I'm just ready to kick it up a few notches and enjoy some truly amazing graphics.
This is what I'll be getting, I'm thinking it should do the trick...

    Intel i7-2760
Dual NVidia 560M SLI (I just love NVidia! and for 3D)
    12GB of Memory @ 1600MHz
    120GB Intel (510) SSD
    750GB SATA 7200rpm HDD
    6X Blu-ray Reader 8X DVD+/-R DL Super-Multi Drive
    IC Diamond 7 Thermal Compound
plus more not so important stuff...

I think you are correct. Even then, do you feel like its a worth-while upgrade for the laptop monitor? I thought that if it was a software or settings tweaking method that I could probably do it myself. But if its a hardware tweak then I was seriously considering it - only if some of you thought it was worth it...

I actually just spoke to one of the guys at Malibal and asked him about the Monitor Calibration. He said it wasn't as much for Gaming as it was for Graphic Design and programs of the sort. So I'm deciding to take that off my order, friendly customer support is getting my order straight with no issues. I'm just waiting to see what kind of discounts I can get for being a member of NotebookReview.com! Does anyone know? I'll post here what they do for me...

I've been playing Skyrim on this laptop, but volume is low. I am using Realtek HD Audio Manager v2.67. I have read that a tweak in SRS sound technology can help, but I don't seem to have the SRS tab in my audio settings. Anyone know where I can download this? I found a SRS APO Control Panel download version 1.8.57.0, but when I try to use it it says "unable to find a compatible srs audio device".

Any suggestions or information on this?

An update on the sound issue:

After trying 4 different versions of official Realtek drivers, I still found none with the SRS plugin. I downloaded a modded driver, and I have to say my sound in skyrim is much louder and more clear. I am not totally happy with it, but it is quite an improvement.

Does anyone know where I can get an official realtek driver release that includes the SRS technology?

And on a side note, if anyone is interested in the modded drivers I am currently using, hit me up via PM.

Since there are no matte screen options for this laptop, I decided to try out a viewguard matte screen protector. It was a huge pain getting all the bubbles out(I actually never got a few of them; the instructions say they will dissipate over time, but we will see) but it does help quite a bit with the glare.

The glossy screen looks nice, but it picked up glare from everything - including the hotkey and touchpad LEDs. I attached some before and after pictures so everyone can see the difference it made. Not earth shattering, but it should help quite a bit with prolonged use.

Hello, I just joined the forum to ask few questions about P180hm in comparison to P170hm

I noticed this has only 3 dimm (up to 12gb) when P170hm has 4 (up to 32gb?). Why does this have this limitation when P170hm (supposedly lower version) has 4?

Also some resellers put this as triple channel but I remember Sandy being only dual channel memory isn't it? Then what happens to the third slotted ram? Does it run as one single channel?

I was so set on P180hm which has everything I wanted for (Sata-III, S-B, dual gfx, 17+ screen) but with that small flaw in ram slots.

Strangely, AW m18x fits all my needs but I can't really DIY build myself

I believe the p170hm supports up to 24gb of RAM. You can put 8gb sodimms in there. I can't imagine needing 24gb of RAM unless one was using CAD or lots of Virtual machines, or wanted a large scratch ramdisk for Photoshop, etc. The reason it has 3 slots instead of 4 probably has to do with the fact that there are 2 video cards in it, which take up a great deal of real estate and power.

If you are dropping so much on this rig, I recommend getting another SSD and putting them into RAID 0. It's pretty amazing.

Ok guis, I took matters into my own hands. If you are interested in unlocking the BIOS features you can follow this thread that I have started. These guys have unlocked the P170HM and P170HM3, so hopefully this will turnaround quickly. If you don't know what any of this means then it's probably too dangerous for you to mess with. You can brick your machine if you eff up, and any hacked BIOS related shenanigans will possibly void any warranties with your reseller.

Question for the builders. I will be making regular appearances in court with the laptop I will be ordering, and the "tribal" red design isn't particularly professional looking. I was hoping that it could be turned off completely and covered.

I contacted Malibal, credit card in hand, because they seem to be the only builder that offers customization to the "tribal" lid light. I talked to the most spectacularly unhelpful customer service rep I have ever run across. He told me he had no idea, was too busy to research the issue, and suggested that I call back tomorrow.

So now I'm desperately hoping that another builder can modify/turn off the backlight so I can buy from someone else. XoticPC will cover it, but they say the light still shines through the vinyl.

I'm assuming this is a BIOS modification; can anyone tell me whether there is a BIOS (or other) option to turn the lid light off?

So I just talked to Sager tech support. They said that the "tribal" lid LED light can be toggled on and off with FN-6. Does someone want to do me a huge favor and verify this? It's literally the only thing that is keeping me from ordering one right now. . .

Holy hell that does toggle the led. I had no idea, but i just checked and it works. Very happy about that.

And maybe if we get these bios unlocked we will be able to change its color as well.

It is amazing. I've got 2 Samsung 830's in RAID 0 and I simply love it!

Nothing happens on my P180HM when I press FN-6.
What exactly is supposed to happen. i.e., what do you mean with "tribal" lid LED

custom gaming laptops - Welcome to Sager Notebooks

Go to "Gallery," upper right and bottom left pictures.

The red backlit "tribal" design on the back of the lid should toggle on and off with FN-6 according to Sager tech support. Glutton confirmed. Does yours work the same way?

I think that only applies to Sager machines. Our bios and drivers are from Clevo. FN-6 doesn't work on my P180HM from Malibal.

After reading this thread I made up my mind about buying this laptop.

I have some questions about it, I'm planing to buy true 5.1 headset for this laptop, so does the on board sound-card supports 5.1, because I see there are 4 jacks but not sure about their functions.

If not, I'm going to buy external sound card for 5.1
