I was pretty shocked myself, but is the 485m faulty or something? Thats the reason why they swapped it?
On another forum there are several people who experience the same problem with the 485, and are forced to send it in for servicing

Can I replace my 485m with the 580m?

@babyhemi - any idea what seems to be the problem, since all the 485m user are able to swap them for free? wait a minute will it be free swap or is there any fee required?

Whee! I just placed an order at Malibal over the phone with a very friendly sales rep named Matt. I was a little nervous about placing this order because I'm a rather indecisive person. I've been going back and forth between Origin PC, xoticpc, Alienware, Powernotebooks, GentechPC, etc... But I have a feeling I made a very good choice going with the Satori P170HM from Malibal. I am expecting my laptop to arrive sometime next week. I'm so anxious I can't wait! :D Soon I will be a real owner.

ok question, if i purchased my machine with 6990m, can i purchase a gtx580m and use at this machine?? because i heard from friends and some local reseller(my area) that i cant swap gpu of different brands, meaning if it come with amd, i need to upgrade with amd gpu only and vice versa for the nvidia....

    Sager News: 4/7/2011
The Sager NP8170 system will be split into 2 internal models, one with an NVIDIA GPU and the other with an AMD GPU. Note that these two models each require their own system version and GPUs will NOT be interchangeable. So, if you order an NVIDIA GPU system you will not be able to swap to an AMD GPU later, and vice versa.

I've seen that message from my reseller as well. So yeah, most likely you will only be able to upgrade from the specific brand you have right now...

I would like to know if any of the sellers who post here have actually tried this swap themselves, just to confirm that it is indeed true.

    See that's what I figured.

The report has made zero sense, from the moment Sager first reported that the swap was impossible.

It's the same MXM slot regardless of what goes on around it.

What brandname of RAM is used in the Clevo P170? Is it Crucial Ballistix or G.skill Ripjaws X Series or Team Group Xtreem or...?

You can swap them but they have different heatsinks so you have to be sure to use the right one for the right card. Other than that, and loading the proper drivers, nothing else is involved.

Where did "Sager" report it any differently?

Im a little confuzled about how the audio jacks are set up. On all the reseller websites they list what looks like a 3.5mm port next to the headphone jack as "SPDIF out". Now i know a good bit about audio/home theater setup, and i have never seen SPDIF as anything but optical or coaxial...so im curious as to what that is and how it works...anybody have a surround sound set up off the laptop using that port?

When using my np8170, my right palmrest starts to get warm, is that normal? It becomes warm shortly after i boot up the machine and i've just got this notebook for a month plus.

its SPDIF Toslink mini. I had to buy a mini to toslink adapter which sucks as i have another join in my optical cable that cost a fortune and the adapter is cheap as.

That's normal as long as its not hot. The primary hard drive bay is right under the right palm rest so as it spins up it will get warm

It also won't push surround sound either unless it's Dolby encoded surround sound. For 5.1/7.1 output on these models, you have to use 3 or even 4 of the provided ports in tandem. The S/PDIF does 2 channel PCM audio output normally.

i`m able to do that with my old sager 8690... i hope the new sager model come with the express card slot...

I bought mine off of ebay. Just make sure when you look at the picture, all the holes match, position of connector etc etc. I got mine for $10 out the door. I don't remember the company. The only thing about getting one from "our" distributors is that the face plate will match if you want to swap them. Its called an OBHD caddy. I did not do the swap and it looks just fine, nobody even knows its there. And having 3 drives - priceless

As of 01/06/2012 it is working flawlessly

This is what i got and where:
AC Adapters, HDMI items in JacobsParts Inc store on eBay!

SATA Hard Drive Caddy to Optical CD Bay Adapter (140596245669)

Well, I just ordered the laptop and it's still in Phase 1. I'm going to be playing Diablo 3 roughly around 2 hrs a night and longer on the weekends. Not sure if its necessary to add the thermo compound. I still have time to add it to my order.

It isn't necessary, but it is nice. When spending that much money on a high end gaming laptop it only makes sense to use the best thermal compound...it isn't that expensive to protect your equipment.

Do you have to reapply the IC Diamond paste once a year or so? I'm sure that paste they apply doesn't last indefinitely... but then neither does the machine.

Actually, IC Diamond lasts for years. Even under heavy gaming use there is no need to re-paste it for years.

You'll only really need to repaste it if you had to take the heatsink off for any reason. You don't have to, but not repasting if you do remove the heatsink will most likely lead to higher temps due to trapped air between it and the CPU/GPU die. It will probably last longer than the machine if you don't move things around too much.

Sager did a really bad job of applying the paste on my machine when I first got it. I got some from radio shack and applied it myself and noticed a major drop in temps.

you might just want to go with the normal paste and then replace it with a higher grade yourself.
