You don't need a cooling pad, the design is solid and the computer stays constantly cool.

    Agreed.

If your room temps are in the normal range and you do not bench or game for several hours at a time then the cooler is not needed. :)

I'm about to pull the trigger on either a malibal or an xoticpc 8170. I had a couple questions that I'm sure I could find if I wasn't so bad at searching!

If I buy with a 500GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache), will it be easy to add in a http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-256GB-SSD-SATA-CT256M4SSD2/dp/B004W2JL2A/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1320942423&sr=8-3 as a second drive? I've never really played around with installing my own components on either a desktop or laptop, but I assume it shouldn't be that bad? The m4 seems like a much better bargain than the intels that malibal/xotic offer for SSD options.

I guess that's it. I am excited to get a new laptop and will hopefully order today.

Check out the disassembly guide here: P17xHM_ESM.zip

It is relatively easy to replace the drives, and Sager includes a recovery DVD you can use to reinstall Windows. Just use the Windows key on the bottom of the laptop to activate :)

I'm in process of trying to get decent hedphones for this laptop, I'm leaning towards Beyerdynamic 770 Pro 80hz.

I found this info on our sound, trying to figure out what we output.
What is S/PDIF & Line-In Jack, what do I use these connections for ?

    3D Enhanced Sound System
    S/PDIF Digital Output
    Built-In Microphone
    THX TruStudio Pro
    7.1CH Audio output supported by

S/PDIF is your optical audio output, usually used for connecting to home theater surround sound systems. Line-in is for when you want to input sound into the machine. In 7.1 mode though, it becomes an output jack to support the required speaker channels.

I'm trying to reinstall the PowerDVD8 which shipped with my machine, and it's asking me for a serial number (CD key).

    Where should I find this?

Are you installing it from a disc that came with the machine? Generally, that code is included on a yellow sticker on the CD sleeve. If you didn't find the disc double check the sleeve in the included bag as they sometimes like to hide it there. If you didn't receive the disc, you would want to contact your reseller as they should be able to get that code for you.

Has anyone else with the 75% color gamut screen not able to adjust the brightness? Not that I need to, but it helps when I'm using my laptop at night and don't need it so bright.

if anyone knows how/if I can fix this please let me know

Are your hotkey drivers not working? You can try reinstalling them from Sager's website or your CD if that is the issue. Otherwise, maybe try reducing the gamma factor from Nvidia control panel/CCC?

Just to know : Is there money left of your 2000$ with this setup ? And do you really need the bluray reader ? What will you do with this laptop ?

Personnaly I would opt for the intel 6300 instead of the Bigfoot 1103 (or the Intel 6230 to get bluetooth) and if you can save money on the CPU with a 2670QM and opt for the DVD writer (no bluray) you could put a Crucial M4 128GB and you would be more than satisfied with this change IMO !

Pretty close on the $2000 now, but I am open to suggestions. I don't mind going over. As for the blu-ray, I don't need it. I would like to hear your reason for the Intel as when i searched I found reviews saying the bigfoot was faster, I have no personal experience with either of these.
I was kicking around a ssd I can do a
    Primary: 120GB Intel® SSD 510 Series SATA 6.0Gb/s
Secondary: 750GB 7200rpm SATA 300 Hard Disk Drive
and still be ok with the price if i axe the blu-ray.

That is a very popular and great setup having the primary the 120GB Intel SSD 510 and the 750GB 7200rpm in the second slot.

You might want to check out the below thread for a Bigfoot, Intel 6300 discussion. :)

Yes there are many Clevo / Sager users that have the Seagate hybrid drive as their main drive.

You might find more users chime in if you post in the MAIN thread. :)

    Hey Ownasaur,

I think I am on the verge of ordering the same config as yours.

Can you tell me if i7 2630QM is enough for battlefield 3? I plan to play with ATI Radeon 6990M.

Also, I have order 4-SO DIMM 8 GB RAM instead of 2. Does this make any difference in performance?

Thanks for the help guys. These forums are great :)

Ok guys this is gonna be a long one but i hope you can help as i have spent hours pouring through equally biased reviews of the clevo np8170hm laptop and the alienware m17x r3. I know you guys may be a little biased but i want the Clevo alot more than i want the alienware :D

Ok, so what im looking for is the most basic laptop i can get my hands on with a quality screen and a HD990m minimum for less than £1100 (but i can eat bake beans for the rest of the year if i have to spend an extra £100 ;))

To start i will post the basic spec of the 2 laptops i have in mind starting with the alienware:

English Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium (64 BIT)
    Alienware M17x Stealth Black
    Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 2670QM (2.20Ghz, 6MB, 4C)
    2GB GDDR5 AMD® Radeon™ HD 6990M
    4096MB 1333MHz Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM [2x2048]
    320GB (7,200rpm) SATA Hard Drive
    17.3" WideFHD (1920 x 1080) WLED LCD
DVD+/-RW (DVD, CD read and write)
    Dell Wireless 1501 wireless-N - EUR

price £1170 using quidco cashback and 15% off offer :)

And the Clevo spec (btw this is from pcspecialist.co.uk):

Vortex II: 17.3" Glossy Full HD LED Widescreen (1920x1080)
Intel® Core™i3 Dual Core Mobile Processor i3-2330M (2.20GHz) 3MB (i choose i3 because someone mentioned it will make little difference on high resolution due to the i3 being a sandy bridge. Also i know some games are quad core but i can upgrade later)
    2GB SAMSUNG 1333MHz SODIMM DDR3 MEMORY (1 x 2GB) (i have another 2 gigs at home)
    2GB AMD® Radeon® HD 6990M - DirectX® 11 (17.3" Vortex II)
    250GB SERIAL ATA II 2.5" HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (5,400rpm) (i have a 320gb 7200rpm at home)
    8x SATA DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)
ARCTIC COOLING MX-3 HIGH THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY COMPOUND (£9) (keeps it colder prolonging life)
1 Year Dead Pixel Guarantee Inc. Labour & Carriage Costs (£19) (is this worth it? how many you guys got a dead pixel in the first year of use?)

price: £1101 or £1200 with the same cpu as the alienware (i7 2670m)

Now from all the reivews ive read i have gathered this info:

Clevo case is quiet and runs cold and the alienware fans sound like a hairdryer and burns peoples laps because it gets so hot.

Some reviewers say the clevo chirclet keyboard is "grade A" some say its good but too noisy and others say its terrible. Mixed bag with the mousepad too. Alienware gets good review all around with slight keyboard flex mentioned.

According to Anandtech the clevo screen is appalling with rubbish viewing angles and has about a quarter contrast-ratio of what other reviewers have said the clevo has. See here: AnandTech - AVADirect's Clevo P170HM with GeForce GTX 485M: High-End You've Been Waiting For

How much of the above is true?

Please answer. I really, really need some help as trying to decide how to spend so much money is making my head hurt

i got my sager 8170 in early july. the case runs pretty cool, and idles quietly. i've got the nvidia 560m gpu and the 2720 cpu, and am idling about 40 degrees celsius. i'm not a gamer, so i can't say much about its running when gaming, or with the amd 6990.

as for the screen, i believe that anand review is out of date. the early 8170s shipped with an LG screen, but, at least in the US, they are now shipping with the Hannstar, which anand gave rave reviews to (with however an ASUS G73 - search for anand's review of the G73). you might check with your UK reseller, which screen is shipping. if it's a Hannstar, it should be fine.

Okay, I'm not sure this is the best thread to bring this but it seems fitting. I'm not actually the owner of the Malibal Satori P170HM, but my father in law bought it a couple months ago purely on my recommendation. He loves it but is having an issue with the wireless, so here I am to try and figure it out..

Basically what's happening is he's playing EQ2 and suddenly his internet cuts out randomly for a short time. Not long enough to completely disconnect him, but long enough and often enough to cause problems. He sits on the floor below his router almost directly underneath it. No one else is having this issue, either wired nor wireless, so I doubt the router is the problem (at least not directly). When he moves upstairs the problems disappear, so I'm thinking it's his wireless card.

The first thing I'm thinking is maybe driver issue and installing latest drivers might resolve it, but looking at the support page I see the driver seems to be from 2010 so I think he may have the latest. We took the default wireless option (Internal 802.11B/G/N LAN and Bluetooth Card) since he doesn't need the most efficient option. I'm thinking it may have better to go for the more expensive options though.

Has anyone heard of an issue like this?

fantastic info about the screen! i will get right on that and ask them now :)

Ok it uses the new screen and while the contrast of the clevo is better than the alienware its white balance is the lowest ive ever seen which makes gaming a nightmare anywhere except in a dark room right? Its got better colour accuracy but not as good gamut but that really dosnt make much right? To summarize the alieware is going to brighter and more colourful while less colour accurate (by 10%) and have half the black balance of the clevo

Found some info that makes me wanna stick with the i3. If you look at the link below you will see the i3 2330m ranks 67th best cpu in the world at the moment and is very closely matched 3dmark06 score to the i7 620M which is 39th. I know sythetic benchmarks are not much to go by so if anyone knows some real world benchmarks to back up my claim that would be much appreciated although i dont think anyones ever made a hd6990m laptop with an i3 core.

^^^^ Sorry I do not understand... having an i3 CPU in this model has not been done by any of the dealers and resellers that I know of.

Can you explain more why you want to stay with an i3?

Hey guys - what kind of temps are you getting with Skyrim? It seems like my avg is 85 degrees and it'll spike at around 95/97.

I'm getting about 82C on normal fans, and 74C when fans are set to constant 100% on normal GPU clocks.

Temps over 90C are worth worrying about. Are you using your machine on a hard surface? Are your ambient temps rather high? I'd consider repasting the CPU/GPU or trying a cooling pad if neither of those are issues.

Yes 95-97C temps are a concern. Are you making sure that your vents on your machine are fully free of any obstruction. Is it on a flat hard surface? :)

Received my brand-spanking new 8170 yesterday. I am-a-so happy! Unfortunately didn't have time to do anything other than take it out of the box and stare at it as I fell asleep. After work tonight will be a completely different story. Once I get it set up, I will perform a complete set of benchmarks. I will also post them if anyone is interested, as this machine has been out for quite some time now, but perhaps not with the i7-2760 configuration.

I am using my machine on a hard surface. My ambient temps are slightly high, they are in line the rest of the machine (avg temp, top temp, etc).

Yes, I am. I think it may be time to repaste them...which is weird because I bought the laptop earlier this year (right before summer time). Typically, if you game fairly hardcore on it how often should I be repasting?

Did you get the stock thermal paste or did you pay to get it upgraded? If it is stock then a repaste isn't out of the question, however, it should have lasted longer than that. Grab some IC Diamond or Arctic Silver, that stuff lasts for a very long time.

Just to continue the conversation for others reading, I'm PM'ing some troubleshooting tips to see what the cause is :p

Worst-case scenario, we might need to get the laptop back to Sager for some warranty work.

Sure. I'll keep this up to date, I'm currently going to reset HWMonitor values and run the game for 5 minutes - swap back and see what my temp is.

Edit: So after coming home, booting up the computer, and playing Skyrim for 30 minutes the temp was high. So I did something I should have done before posting ANY of this...I checked my fans. It turns out my GPU fan is not turning on..sooooooo I will be shipping my Sager in for repairs.

I've heard different opinions on that. Anywhere from every 6 months, 1 year, to 5 years. I really don't know...I would suggest you do this, apply the thermal paste play a relatively demanding game for an hour...BF3 or The Witcher 2 (I suggest TW2) and record your temps. Keep those temps in mind as you continue to play through out the life time of your machine. If you see the temps begin to climb 5 to 8 degrees, perhaps you should consider reapplying thermal paste. I personally, I plan to repaste anytime my temps get at a consistent 87+ degrees. I don't overclock so my thoughts appear to be reasonable. Also my reseller is XoticPC and I made a thread in the Sager forum to document my experience for the repair.

It does vary based on usage, but most higher-end stuff will last for quite some time. We use IC Diamond because it stays good for so long.

Also, there might be a little bit of curing time, so what Getawayfrommelucas said is a perfect way to cure the thermal compound.

Haven't you heard? We've started using teleportation scrolls instead of UPS.

I've been playing way too much Skyrim.

Anyway, let us know how it runs for you! Feel free to shoot me or your sales advisor a PM if you have any questions.

A note about the 120Hz screen. After Win7 install, I noticed mine defaulted to 60Hz and I just switched it to 120Hz. Anyone have any input on to the 120Hz settings? It's ok to just leave it at 120Hz all the time? Any reason to keep it at 60Hz? Any pros and cons?

Screen Calibration... any pointers as to how to calibrate this beautiful 120Hz screen? I want to get the most accurate colors & brightness as I should.

For the 120Hz, you may only want to use it when you're on AC. The doubled framerate causes the GPU to work a bit harder, so it will drain your battery a little faster than normal. Otherwise, there aren't any downsides to keeping it running all the time :)

For the screen calibration, I'd suggest getting your hands on a Spyder 3 or any other calibration tool. If you can't, you can always try to use the Nvidia control panel to match it by eye. Some people have recommended using the color/paint sample sticks you can get at art and home improvement stores to calibrate it by eye. Of course, the professional tool will work much better and with less work.

I'm seeing temps over 90C regularly in Skyrim and other games, on a hard surface with my wallet under it propping it up a bit in the back (but not covering any intakes), repasted with ICD7 (done a few months ago and then done again last night just to see if the first was a bad paste job), ambient temps around 70F.

I'm definitely getting a ton of hot air out of the exhausts.

Here's a shot of CPUID after 5 minutes of spectating a Dota 2 game. All my temps look high -- is CPUID reliable for reporting temps?
