Are you sure about that being Celsius?

You'd be sitting in the middle of an arid desert or something.

50C is 122 farenheit = you are at the equator and feeling very dehydrated... If it is 50F, it's only 18* above freezing - either way, you can't be comfy! :D

So they've decided just to send my laptop for RMA. Feel little sad cause i know it will going to take a while (shipping & repair time). Speaker problem should only be repaired at their place they said because I asked them if I can have it replace by just sending a working speaker and have it replaced by myself. :(

Hm, I can't find any good search result regarding battery care. Can I just leave my battery while on AC? Will there be an degrading effect on the batt?

From what I've read, total battery capacity drops if it stays at 100% at high temperatures for long periods of time. So I guess if you overclock and game/cad/encode a lot and you never take the laptop off your desk, charge the battery to 80% and then take it out and store it in a closet until you need it... otherwise, don't worry.

I have developed my own system for battery longevity. In a previous post I revealed the fact that a previous laptop (Sony F---) had an app that allowed you to charge to 80% and it would not charge past that, all the time it was plugged in. It was suggested that occasionally it would be good to take it to 100% by changing the max charge value in the app. THEN, every few days or so depending on a million things related to your actual usage pattern, take it to minimum charge. Then repeat the whole thing.....

So I try to do what I can to mimic that, obviously I cannot stay plugged in & have it maintain 80% charge, but I do unplug regularly, let it get to a low state, recharge to 80-90% then deplete again, or let it charge all the way and not worry about it. A mix of all this is my workaround.

Until that it is.... .some clever programmer treats us to an app like I described above. May that day be soon?

    Anyone? Anyone?

about once a month I put the laptop on battery until it dies and then plug her back in. I always thought that was the best way for modern batteries.

Yes I do understand this needing to come in for the repair.

They may run into other issues in fixing you up (it may be more than the speaker itself that is bad) so it is better to be at the depot where all the parts are. :)

I got laid off awhile ago so I seem to have some free time. The battery lasts about 2 hrs and 20 minutes. Astounding from this beast. My G73 gets about an hour and a half.
Finally, I have a real good prospect tomorrow morning with a tel-interview. Government stuff with 75% travel. My last job was about 50% travel and I had my 8170 SET UP for travel. The G73 was physically a big beast to carry around and I had to get a much bigger rolling laptop bag for the airports. Now I can use my favorite OLD leather rolling bag. Its made by Solo,

15.6" Leather Rolling Laptop Case, Tan, SOLO CLASSIC Collection

I seem to to have the last of the 17"ers. It also has an accessory bag that slips over the handle and between the two bags I can carry my whole geeked out office!!. I think I have about 33000 miles on it.

Would someone hook me up with a link to the latest 6990m driver? I went to the AMD site, downloaded the file, but was told that I didn't have a valid display adapter for it or some such. Cheers

My NP8170 just reached stage 3 of building at XoticPC and I'm hoping it'll be here soon. One thing I'm wondering if I'll regret is not getting any kind of custom skin or paint on the laptop. I'm not one that needs something overly fancy, but I worry that the design might be too bland.

I tried searching this thread for the word "skin" and came up with nothing so I was wondering: Do any of you have any external customization on your laptop and would you care to post a picture of it and where you got it?

If you decide you want a skin aftermarket, these two sites are pretty popular choices:

GelaSkins | iPad Skins, iPhone Skins, iPod Skins, Laptop Skins, Gaming Skins, Custom Skins, Giclee Prints and more...
Custom Phone Covers, Phone Cases & Skins For Electronics | Skinit

The latter will also custom size them to fit exactly I believe. I haven't seen anyone else on here posting about having the custom made-to-order styling off the bat though (they may be here, just not posting about it :) )

Can somebody recommend me a good registry cleaner or some kind of cleaner to keep my 2 laptops running good.
I run SSD's in both and use the Intel Toolbox to optimize them once a week but I'm looking for a different kind of cleaner. What are y'all using and your opinions?
    Thanks

Hey Larry. What is a normal 3DMark Vantage score my my Sager 8170 setup?
    i7 2720- 485M. No Overclocking. I'm using Nvidia 280.26 drivers
My Vantage score was- 13347. That seems very low right?

Thanks for all your replies, maybe for now i'll just leave it in and maybe drain it when i remember. :) I know it will degrade batt's life but because 1 of the feet stand of the notebook is on the battery and removing it makes the laptop sway and lean on that side whenever I'm playing or sometimes just laying my left hand.

Need help, I am planning to buy a Crucial m4 128gb:

    1. is there any problem with compatibility with Clevo p170hms?
    2. Will it work with the Intel SSD Toolbox?

I'd like to save some money that's why I am going with m4 with a plus on speed than intel 510. But I like the Intel's SSD Toolbox, knowing that their is such software to support their SSD's in terms of maintenance and optimization. I can't decide between m4 and 510. :)

No compatibility issues that I've heard of lately, I know some system builders offer it as an option. Also, on Intel's website for the SSD Toolbox, it says it is still compatible with other SSDs. So you may be able to use it, although I don't know how much different it would be vs. an Intel-branded drive.

Ok cool. I score about 15400 in Vantage with a 650/1625 overclock.
    Not to shabby I guess

I'm in the market for a 24"-26" monitor
How does the 485M work with 1920X1200 resolutions?
What gaming monitor do you guys suggest?

For gaming monitors, I'd suggest something that does 120hz. I have this one:

    Newegg.com - Acer GD235HZbid Black/orange 23.6" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen 1080p 120Hz NVIDIA 3D LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 DC 80000:1

It was the only one available at the time of purchase that did 120hz and was Nvidia 3D Vision certified. You have the 485m, so you could always go with 3D Vision if you wanted to.

That said, there are tons and tons of options out there. I'd suggest doing some comparison shopping. It's better to see them in person as comparing specs is difficult because a lot of them vary by manufacturer.

Yea you are right. It seems only the Dell monitors have 1920x1200 nowadays. My best friend games on a 24" Dell Ultrasharp 1920x1200 and I just built him a desktop using the 3GB EVGA 580SC and his monitor looks awesome.
I would love a 27"-30" but what worries me is the 1080P resolution on a bigger monitor. Im worried it's not going to be sharp enough. There are more pixels per square inch on a 24". I like big monitors but only if i can get a bigger resolution like 2560x1600. And even if I could afford that my 485M would never power it at the framerates I want.

Im literally driving to Best Buy in 10 minutes and buying a Samsung 27" and trying it out. Im going to return it in a few days. lol :) Thats the only way to really know how I am going to like the bigger screen.
Im probably going to splurge on a 24" Asus from Newegg tho.
What are your opinnions on larger screens(25"-27") and 1920X1080 resolutions. Do they look grainy?

Hi all, i just placed an order for this at Xotic :D

    - Display: 17.3" FHD 16:9 "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Glossy Screen w/ 90% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080)

    - Processor: 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2860QM, 2.5-3.6GHz, (32nm, 8MB L3 cache)

    - Thermal Compound: - IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU

    - Graphics Video Card: nVidia GeForce GTX 580M 2,048MB PCI-Express

    - Ram: 8GB - DDR3 1866MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)

    - x2 Intel X25-M 80GB in Raid-0 (pulling those out of my current NP8760)

    - Optical Drive Bay: 6X Blu-Ray Read/8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive

    - Wireless Network: Intel® Ultimate-N 6300 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN

    - Spare AC Adapter: Sager NP8170 Spare 220Watt AC Adapter (220 holy crap! )

Should be a week or 2 before i get it, cant wait

I'm really looking forward to seeing the difference between the 90%Gamut screen vs Sagers standard 1920x1080LED Glossy thats on my NP8760. Also going form a GTX285M to a 580M should be a nice improvment! And of course im going from a 1stGen 820QM @ 1.73Ghz to a 2.5Ghz i7...

I realize i already had a really nice system but getting the nicer aluminum build and pretty much double the power with the 580M was enough to push me over the edge.

oh yeah, why the heck does this thing Not have a backlit keyboard????? If they come out with a new model including BLKeyboard i will lose my $&%^

    1. The NP8760 is going to have the Hannstar, which in all reality is a really really good screen. The difference in color quality is going to be huge though.

It would be really cool if you could take some pictures with the two machines side by side, having the same picture displayed on both screens.

2, The 480M is way beyond 2x he speed of the 285M. At 1080p it may be triple.

    3. Models with backlit keyboards are supposedly coming in the Q1 refresh of next year.

Why the 2860QM though. It's price/performance ratio is all screwed up.

Anything under the 32" mark IMO looks good with 1920x1080. Usually when you get that large, though, you tend to look for a TV instead because more than likely you'll want to watch movies on it too, and TVs are good for that type of thing. Also, that's a good idea about trying out the screen, I think the 27" will be quite nice with 1920x1080, I don't think you'll have any grainy issues.

Also, the 2560x1600 resolution can be handled by your 485M, but I agree with you, it may be stressing it quite a bit on higher settings. Might be worth a try if you ever get the chance, though.

OR.... by the time that future purchase comes around, every other component will be advanced from what we have today. My plan is to work this thing until the next one "needs to come home with me". What you have will be good until then.

    I'm just saying.....

Why the 2860QM? no real reason.. I originaly chose the 2760QM but decided at the last second to pay the 190$ for a 100Mhz bump plus the 2 exra MB's of cache. (my 820QM has 8MB's of cache so i didn't want to feel like i was downgradding! ;) )

Well, after replacing my 6230 back to a 6300, the performance was still poor. I ended up sending it back for RMA and nothing was deemed wrong with it. When I got the laptop back, I soon discovered that my power option was set to power saver when running on battery. I tested it and that was why I was getting poor WiFi performance. uuuuggggghhhh, do I feel dumb!

ummm, I just did the same thing. I had it outside with a slight breeze and about 80F. Went back outside and the screen was black. I thought, that's funny, I just turned off the screen saver ... it would not do a thing. !
Did not plug in the "another brick in the wall" (floyd, as in pink), only in the back of the lappy!

Making a couple of last minute decisions and leaning towards a Satori P170HM from Malibal. It will be my first non-HP laptop and I am pretty excited. I have a question regarding the RAM options.

Would I be better off with:

    (8GB) 8192MB, PC3-12800/1600MHz DDR3 - 2 SO-DIMM

    or

    (12GB) 12288MB, PC3-10660/1333MHz DDR3 - 3 SO-DIMM

Regarding Video, would upgrading from the NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 560M 1.5GB GDDR5 to the AMD® Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5 make a considerable difference? As for gaming, I play WoW, lots of old games for nostalgia and try out new mmorpgs as they come out (will be testing Wildstar). I do use Adobe CS for work daily and will require that to be smooth.

    Thanks!
