Really big? I think we can say that is relative -- my alienware mx17 (which cost me nearly 5 grand CAD when I bought it 3.5 years back) was just as heavy and just as thick, though it was a 17 and not a 17.3".

I wish I had that money today for the tech available now - what a difference in power for price!

Don't get your hopes up too high, I don't know if I have the time to do proper benchmarking while on vacation with no guarantee of a stable power supply.

Anyone got a link on where to get the user manual for the G170? I've forgotten if it's lost somewhere in this very huge thread.

Re-pasted with ICD7 last night, now my max idle temps are 67C (though it just kind of periodically ramps up while I'm web browsing and stuff, looks like it's about 45C idle in general). Furmark tops out at 92C now rather than the 98C I was hitting before, and I couldn't get any games to top 90C, whereas Dead Island a DX:HR were both up around 96C before.

So, still pretty hot, but nothing I'm too concerned about any more.

Ey people just joined this forum...
I'm looking at the Clevo P170HM(in the Malibal Satori) and was just wondering what the general consensus as to the CPU performance is... I'm a desktop person that is just moving mobile so I'm not really sure about these things.

So, I'm looking to get the p170hm with the 2630QM and 6990m(I prefer performance for the dollar) and was wondering if there was any quantifiable real-world difference(besides feeling cooler for having a "faster" cpu) between the 2730 and the higher 2X60 models of the mobile sandy bridge. My main applications will be current performance intensive games, and the occasional video encoding.

Would you say the 2630QM is an equivalent to my desktop i7-920 clocked at 3.35ghz?

As an aside, I wonder if anyone actually buys the SSDs from these resellers , they are terribly overpriced due to the fact that they use intel ssds(and they mark them up, it seems). Probs going to just put a Vertex 3 120g on mine for half the price by myself.

The 90% gamut screen came in yesterday from Delpan (thanks buddy) and along with the screen I got spyder3 express calibrator.
I installed it today and wow, the colors are rich, right away the screen feels filled much more with colors, the white is whiter my brushed aluminum theme looks finally like aluminum, not blue aluminum :)
I need to get used to it, because I know it looks better, just my eyes can't get used to it, I looked at the stock display for too long :)

Congrats with the new panel sumik, just glad i could help :)
But yes you need some transition time to adjust your eyes to the new panel, cause it is indeed a bit different, cause it is able to display a lot more colours than the old panel, so the look and feel, is a bit different!

But its just about getting used to it, infact this panel looks more "real" to the truth :) than the stock panel... but thats how it goes, if this was the stock panel you wouldnt even have noticed :D

I can't believe this. A whole line of pixels just died, right before my eyes, as I was browsing the web. And I mean DEAD dead, like.... I can see the backlighting through the line. It's abought a quarter of the way across the screen starting in the lower left quadrant.

What a great thing to happen on my birthday!

That really sounds bad, and it sounds like a 1 in a 50 million problem :/

Just hope you have a backup panel then Kevin... hmm, just cant see how so many pixels can die like that! but again i dont know the advanced stuff about how panels work! but that really sounds like serious bad luck!

^^^^Have you tried any pixel fixers out there for the "whole line of pixels just died"? I know it is a long shot, but it is free. :)

If the stuck pixel software/reboot don't fix it, try making sure the cable is tight. It's extremely unusual for a whole line of pixels to die at once. It is however, not uncommon for a loose or faulty screen cable to cause that to happen.

So, I got the Nyx in and it is absolutely fantastic so far. My only complaint with the computer to date is the space bar. Anybody else find yourself constantly having to backspace to re-push the space bar, because it didn't go the first time? Perhaps it is simply me being unused to this style of keyboard.

Do you guys know why the 120 Hz screens are nvidia only?as I read, the 6990 should support 120 Hz..
I don't care about 3dor any of that fanciness... I just want the malibal free upgrade to the matte screen... tbh I don't even care about 120hz, just want a matte.

Yes the 120 Hz screen will work with the 6990M card in this model it will just not have 3D. Sager for one has determined at this time to only offer this screen with the nVidia cards.

This may change, we do not know anything further at this time. Sorry.

Hmm... that's strange, but it's up to them, i suppose.

In any case, how's the stock screen on the P170HM? I've seen mixed reviews on the screen as far as brightness, contrast, and how distracting the glossiness is, so I'm kinda confused. I am considering getting the p170hm with the stock screen, and taking it out and selling it on ebay for an AUO 90% screen.
I don't really care too much about color accuracy as my primary use for the thing would be games, but the brightness/glare issues that may/may not exist are a big concern to me.

Literally, "Lonely paradise, hollow cradle, I knew I would ever lose, your name continues to drift - even glean a dream picture of broken glass".

Japanese poetry and thought, though no doubt losing expression and nuance in the sloppy translation. But it gives an idea.

All hail the online translator!

The stock HannStar display is very nice for a stock screen. Many on this forum have stated this. It is better than the run of the mill 17.3's on the market.

This is a good idea about taking it out and putting the AU Optronics B173HW01 V.4 screen. This is the best glossy screen for this unit at this time. There may be other choices by the end of this year too. :)

Would you guys say the 2630QM would be of comparable performance as the desktop i7-920? Mine is clocked at 3.35ghz, but I don't know if the architecture improvements between first and second gen i7s would bridge that gap.

Especially the new relaunched versions of the Sandy bridge i7s, that launched last week i think.

Yes at stock, no if overclocked. Check out the benchmarks here:

    Mobile Processors - Benchmarklist - Notebookcheck.net Tech

The 920/930/940 are a tiny bit faster than the 2630, but slower than the 2720. It's almost negligible though (especially considering that the 2630 and 2720 differ by ~20% overall). They are very close in overall speed though, so you'd be happy with the tradeoff from the desktop to mobile processor.

I'm amazed at how huge of a difference the performance is between the 2630 and the 2720... the 2760 is probably just going to push that bar even higher.

Thanks for the help deciding, I'm now at a nice $1700 at malibal with the 2760QM, 6990M, 8G ram, 750gb hdd, and the 6230 nic. By the pricing of things it seems that I should be able to basically swap the stock hannstar display for the AUO v.4 screen for basically no price difference by myself on ebay.

I believe the older i7s had issues with ram stability if you fully populated the ram slots, does sandy bridge/h67 have that issue? I'm looking to get the 4x2gb instead of the 2x4gb and was wondering if it would be more trouble than the $50 savings its worth.

I got mine with 2 of the 4GB modules and added two more when I received it. Couldn't be easier. If you go with 2GB modules you will end up not using something you paid for, if you ever decide to go 16GB. For me the choice therefore was easy.

Having the full 16GB memory is the bomb.

Mixed opinions huh... I see a pretty significant 600 pt difference in PC Mark 06 and a 1100 pt difference in cinebench... I dont know if this would really carry in real world tests, but it is faster than the i7-940 which is closest in performance to my overclocked i7-920 on paper.

If you look at the detailed specs of these procs, there is always more going on than mere clock freq. The benchmarks do indeed show improvement (as one would expect!) and it is NOT just because of the clock. When I got mine I aimed for the sweet spot for my needs, it worked!!

    RPG711:

The laptop runs totally stabile also when all 4 ram sockets are occupied, i use 4x4 GB Kingston HyperX 1600 Mhz PnP ram (16 GB totally), they run very stabile.

Another thing, when ordering your AUO panel on Ebay, just make sure that you buy from a seller that can be trusted, 90% of all those on Ebay dont sell you the "real AUO" panel, cause they are rare to get now. They sell you a "compatible" panel just like it, and at the same size.

So they might send you a AUO V1 og V2 panel for example, or a LG or some , or might even the Hannstar :D even though they write that they have the AUO B173HW01 "V4".

is there anyone have tried comparing the temps between 170hm with 150hm?
    which one is cooler?

i have speculations that 170hm is cooler, but meh, i dunno.
because i would like to order 6990m and want it to last for 1~2 years or so,
i'd like to oc my oncoming rig >.<

there's even a saying that the keyboard and touchpad in 170hm is better than its 15" counterpart. is it true?

i think the 170HM is cooler, cause the 170HM and 150HM can be configured with the same hardware, but the 170HM is larger, there is more space to move heat around and more space between the parts, ... i think that the 170HM has the slight advantage on every part.

They do run cooler- there was a comparison thread here back when the 485m was released (I haven't seen one comparing the 6990 yet though):

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...s-cpu-temperature-clock-speed-comparison.html

There are both P150HM and P170HM temps/frequencies in there.

As far as the keyboard, it's the same between the P150HM and the P170HM- as is the trackpad.

Yes this is true. It is true with most other brands as well.

What make the NP8170 / P170HM so attractive is that in a 8 1/2 pound laptop you can have all of this power. As for the NP8150 / P150HM it is such a great seller because it is the worlds most powerful 15' laptop... :)

If enough people are curious enough, answers get found soon enough. But this is indeed off-topic.

I've seen enough posts to figure out that the fan control shortcut is Fn+1, however does pressing this once enable the fans on full throttle permanently or is it just a temporary stopgap?

The Fn+1 key combo turns the fans on full speed, and if you press the combo again the fans return to whatever speed they were at, ie. it is a TOGGLE.

However, if you experience the "fans come on at full speed" event by themselves (assuming you are not running some super intense operation) (mine occurs if SLEEP mode progresses to HIBERNATE mode upon waking from HIBERNATE) then the Fn+1 combo does not toggle them at all, except for a momentary speed change. Then for me, the answer is to RESTART.

Something to keep in mind then, thanks for the quick reply. I probably won't need the toggle if it's sitting on a cooler though.
