    Hi Guys,
An associate of mine purchased many Sager NP8170 systems at a nice corporate discount and has a few extra NEW IN THE BOX he would like to liquidate. He is willing to let this one go for almost $1K less than the retail price.

    17.3" Full HD LED-Backlit Display with Super Glossy Surface (1920 x 1080)
Nvidia GeForce GTX 485M GPU with 2GB GDDR5 Video Memory
    Processor 2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2820QM Processor ( 8MB L3 Cache, 2.30GHz)
IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU
    MS Windows® 7 Professional 32/64-Bit Edition ( 64-Bit Preloaded )
    16GB Dual Channel DDR3 SDRAM at 1600MHz - 4 X 4GB
    RAID Storage Options Non-RAID Storage
120GB Intel 510 Series SATA3 Solid State Disk Drive
500GB 7200rpm SATA 300 Secondary Hard Disk Drive
    8X DVD±R/RW/4X +DL Super-Multi Drive & Software
Wireless Network Card Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1103 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module
Primary Battery Smart Li-ION Battery Pack
    Integrated Security Device Fingerprint Reader
Microsoft Office Microsoft Office Starter 2010
Warranty Sager 1 Year Limited Parts and Labor Warranty
    Carrying Bag Standard Carrying Bag

The serial number can be provided to the serious buyer to confirm the warranty is fresh and transferable. Additionally, his contacts at Sager will accept the new system back for the 3D/120Hz display upgrade if that is desired for the normal upgrade price listed on their site.

I would jump on this one, but I already have too many systems I am testing and playing with so this hot deal is going to make someone else a happy camper.

PM me for the price, which is BELOW $1.9K.

    Scott-

As far as I'm aware, WiDi isn't available on this model because you're right, the Intel graphics need to be wired up for it to work. It should work on Optimus enabled models though (W150HR for instance). The overall combination needed is a supported processor + wifi card + HD graphics chipset in addition to the software.

Anyone else Playing Deus Ex: Human Revolution and seeing some crazy high GPU temperatures? I peaked at 95C, even with my laptop propped up on a hard surface (plenty of ventilation), which seems pretty damn hot.

I have all settings on Deus Ex maxed and have not come close to temperatures that high, they are usually in the mid-70's. When overclocking the 6970M to 800/1000, which was totally unnecessary for fluid gameplay might I add, max temperatures reached low 80's.

Hey can anyone tell me what type of NTSC gamut the 3d 1920x1080 @120hz screen is at? I'm guessing it's not great since non of the resellers seems to advertise it at the 72% or 90% that the other screens are?

The display panel is specifically an LG/Phillips LP173WF2 and is pretty nice. It is the same panel Dell uses on the L702x 3D and HP uses on the Envy-17 3D.

At any rate, the free upgrade from the standard panel is going to get MALIBAL some good business. I only suggest offering the glossy version of the panel in addition to the matte since the glossy does give you a little bit better contrast and brightness in real world use. This is important as every bit is needed and used during 3D viewing through those active shutter glasses. Regardless, the 120Hz mode in 2D is sooo much smoother than 60Hz when putting a good HD video or Blu-ray to task like TRON.

So given my high DX:HR temps I fired up furmark, let it run for 3 minutes (1920x1080, 8xMSAA), and topped out at 96C on my GPU. Computer is sitting on a hard surface, ambient room is about 24C. Seems high. Also odd that DX:HR seems to stress it as much as FurMark.

for me furmark 28 min. (1920x1080, 32xMSAA) topped out at around 96-97°C
Computer also sits on hard surface and FN+1 was enabled.
    I use stock paste.

Will repaste with ICD 7 over the weekend and see how / if temps change.

Did you also use 1920x1080 and 32xMSAA
dont know if that makes much of a difference

Just saw I dont have anymore ICD 7 left. Just ordered a new syringe of paste.
So might not be able to post comparing temps over the weekend.
But should be able to post them by the end of next week.

Nope, it's been working great. Reeeeealy fast.

Installing the Intel RST drivers did cause drive hangs, but since I'm not using RAID I don't need them.

I am new to this forum, actually i just purchased my np8170 and will be receiving it within the hour but i purchased it with the stock screen and alot of people have been talking about how much they love the 90% gamut screen. Is there anywhere i could purchase one? I tried googling and ebay with no luck.

Did some more testing today with the stock paste. (P170hm 580m gtx)
    Did 3 runs with furmark.
    settings: 1920x1080 32x MSAA

this time raised on a hard surface desk. fn+1 enabled.
20 min each. Each time the results were between 85 and 86°C
dont know what went wrong the first test though.

Monday ICD 7 will arrive, will repaste and see if there is any difference in temperatur

FWIW, I bought the SwissGear Ibex online for less than $65 shipped. The 8170 does just fit (and much better than it did in my old Dell XPS backpack) - though there's definitely no spare room. But I'm really happy with the fact that the Ibex has a smaller profile (though it can pack a lot of stuff) than the XPS backpack. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good backpack with a lifetime warranty......

I looked at the Targus XL, but preferred the styling and layout of the Ibex. Nothing really against the Targus - and both have great warranties.

Could one of the resellers please confirm if the 120Hz screen is compatible with the 6990M and let us know the part number? I might try an aftermarket upgrade to that screen.

Yes it will work with the 6990M, just no 3D. This 120Hz screen has a 50 pin connector not the 40 pin that is found on all of the other Sager/Clevo models.
It will not plug and play for example into a regular NP8170 or P170HM. See the PDF link below for this screen... :)

    Thanks Larry! :D

After about an hour of Google, I cannot find a 40 pin to 50 pin LVDS converter - could you tell me where I might obtain one, or any other method that could be used to make this work (what do the laptops with nVIDIA cards use?)

    Thank in advance!

*EDIT* Oh, I didn't realize that the same question was asked a few pages back. Silly me.
So there is no way of doing this without getting a compatible motherboard and / or reBIOSing?

Unless Clevo plans to redesign the current models, never. There is a rumored new model with a backlit keyboard that was seen a few months ago, but there's no ETA or positive confirmation that it will ship with the keyboard as is..

To work on current models, they'd have to actually wire them in for power and possibly on/off controls and it's just not likely to happen.

New models with backlit keyboards will likely be available with Ivy Bridge next year though.

The 120Hz compatible display does not use the traditional LVDS interface on the system board. Like shown on the Dell M6600 below, the eDP (embedded display port), which is basically an internal HDMI port, is used. This multi-channel bus supports the higher bandwidth and current needed by the display when in 120Hz mode. Unlike Dell, Sager uses a non-standard connector on the system board and they will not sell this needed eDP cable seperately or as a spare part. So, either someone needs to make an after market compatible cable ;) for the Sager et. al or we need to look for another solution.

Would it even be possible to convert the data from the 40 pin LVDS to the 50 pin eDP, even if such cable existed? the data output must be "larger"or require more "lanes" if its transfered through a 50 pin setup? right?

So the 40 pin LVDS wouldnt even get all the monitor data with it?

Thanks Scott. I guess I'll have to stick with 40 pin LVDS for now.
Is there a 2ms display that is better than the stock Hannstar? Or would I have to go with the AUO?

Well the AUO panel has better colours, but the viewing angles and responsetimes are identical, 8 ms as standard and 60 hz!

So i havent heard about any 2 ms panels out there for 17,3" size except that LG with 120hz/2ms....

Just hope some day people find out how to connect it to a LVDS motherboard! or if its even possible with a converter cable!

So, got my new np8170 and of course I notice that some mornings, from a cold start, the fans come on full force. I know the difference between regular and full, I have used the Fn+1 to turn them on full when doing some animation rendering (even though it didn't need the extra cooling, was doing just fine.

Why are these fans coming on full from a cold boot, where laptop has been off for 12 hours and is most definitely not experiencing a heat issue? Currently all cores and package are at 37-38 C, fans on full.

Is there a way to adjust this in the BIOS and if so, could someone give me very easy to follow step by step walkthrough?

    Thanks!

Do the fans come on full force and stay on at full speed? It's normal for them to come on at full speed, but slow down after POST. As of right now, there's no way to adjust fan speed other than the FN+1 key combo though. (There's no software to interface with the embedded controller yet, and there aren't any bios options for manually controlling fan speed)

The P170HM3 is the P170HM model with the built in 3D emitter and 120hz 3D screen for Nvidia 3D Vision

awesome thanks. Also i think it might just be because im using an es cpu but all the temp monitors i have keep showing my cpu at 0 degrees then 1 then 28 then 37 then back at 4 then 0. It just seems random anyone else with an es have this problem?
Also it seems like my cpu fan is constantly running at max.

I tried it and set the turbo boost ratio to 42x and increased the power max. Cpuz showed it clocked at 4.2 but when i ran the 3dmark11 physics test the score was the same if not lower than before.

It seems like when im not doing anything it will max out at 4.2ghz but when its at full load it will only go up to 2.8ghz

Is there something else i need to change?

heys folks, How do I stop using the fingerprint device completely so it does not ask for my fingerprint at logon? I have tried to unenroll my self but it keeps asking for print. Don't want to inadvertently lock myself out.

Right, because the chip is automatic and you can only OC turbo-boosts. It will downclock itself to stay within thermal budget. So thats totally normal.

Its just a USB device, you can always disable it in the device manager.

Yes, plus the 11,6W for the BL...that sums up to 23,1W in 3D mode just for the screen...
