    GPU: 6970m
Screen: LP173WF1-TLC1 with MifuneT ICC Profile
    Resolution: 1920x1080
    Driver Version 8.81-101208a-111204C-Clevo
    2D Driver Version 8.01.01.1114
    Direct3D Version 7.14.10.0806
    OpenGL Version 6.14.10.10428
    CCC Version 2010.1208.2156.39317

I got shimmering only on full black aero.
The shimmering is more noticeable if you set Aero color intensity to 100%.

On AOC 23" through DVI no shimmering.
On TV LG 60PX950 through HDMI no shimmering.

Again, this shimmering is only visibly if very close to the screen and its pretty normal in led screens.

If one were to buy a GTX 580m to replace a GTX 485m would it require a new heatsink, or is it the same heatsink?

Is there any update regarding 3d vision support for the 580m and the P170HM screen and how long should we expect to wait till this is supported? a week, two...a month? :(

I am looking at my old, still-working np5793(8800m) which had a severe hit last month, and I guess there will be enough features in the P170HM 3D to justify a very happy purchase once the 580m and built-in 3d vision are married. :D

No update, but Clevo and Sager are working on it. These things take time, and one never knows exactly how long until it finally passes Certification.

Hopefully it will only be weeks, not months. :)

Thanks for the quick reply. I also wonder if clevo have plans to release a new 17" case/mobo refresh for the 580m/6990m. I dont know how often the do a fab cycle but the P170HM has been there for a year or so..

Clevo tends to upgrade existing models rather than introducing whole new lines. The P150HM/P170HM already take the 580m (as the 485m is/was being phased out to make way).

I've been using this laptop case from Targus. It is compact in size yet carries everything that I need on the go. So far I've managed to stuff my laptop, power supply, mouse, charging cable for my mouse, a large set of headphones, and there is still room for more. Might be worth a look as it isn't overly expensive, and quite comfortable.

    Hello,

Has anyone tried the new BIOS?

Also, I had a hard time finding the html pages on the Clevo site that lead to the BIOS downloads. The driver section does not seem to include them.

I appreciate this direct file link but I would prefer to go through the website.

    Thanks,
    R

Hi all. I am ridding myself of the MSI GT780R that I only JUST got on Thursday (flimsy, yet beautiful, piece of buggy junk) and exchanging it for a Sager NP8170/Clevo P170HM. Since this is an incredibly lengthy forum, can anybody sum up for me the pros and cons of the Sager?

I do plan to read every page, but ya know...I probably won't get done until the laptop gets here. Any pointers to updates (I already noticed BIOS mentions), etc would be super appreciated - or if there is already something like this, link me? I will give reps :)

Just FYI (if there are any particular issues with certain hardware), here are the basic specs I ordered:
    i7 2720qm CPU
    GeForce GTX 560M 1,536MB
    8gb 1600mhz RAM
    2x500gb HDD (RAID 0)
    Bigfoot Network Killer

I hope I learn more than I did about the MSI! :D

Good move Dude! I got mine about 3 weeks ago and it has hardly been turned off at all. I purposely have NOT updated anything except Windows and my AV program. As you peruse the pages of this Forum you will see stuff about the fans. For instance mine will come on Full Blast when I wake from Hibernate (and only at that time). There is a keyboard function to take the fans to Full Blast to something way less and it is Fn+1 (hold down the Function Key and simultaneously press the numeral 1 key). For me all has been fine after a restart, meaning the fans are at a normal output & the Fn+1 key works as advertised.

Recently, there has been a lot of input about a when-you-look-closely-at-the-screen shimmering effect. Some got it some ain't (apologies for the grammar). We have not narrowed it down yet as to which configs have it or not. I do not & my rig is essentially what you ordered (see the stats on mine below on the sig line) I did add 2 sticks of memory to take it out to the full 16 GB, using one stick I had from a previous laptop and the second I got from Crucial. I do video stuff and memory is well, good!

Recommendations concerning BIOS updates: wait before doing anything! Then get them from your reseller. They have posted to that effect.

Earlier there was talk about what does Fn+F5 do and it has to do with the setting for sound output.

For some reason I am having difficulty attaching the owner's manual & the service manual PDFs to this post (three tries already). So private email me your email address and I will get 'em to you so you can start reading.

    Welcome aboard!

I got them just a bit ago (Thank you!!!) I plan to get on reading those as soon as I get home from work.
I'm looking at a 4-10 day build time at Sager then shipping (It took 3 days from Xotic, I'm figuring on 4 if it ships from CA) All this waiting is killing me! My Alienware was stolen June 2nd, it took two weeks for insurance to get us a check, then 2-1/2 weeks to get the MSI, shipped it back this morning, and now another 2-3 weeks to get the Sager.
    Damn my luck :(
Guess that's what I get for demanding my mother release me from the womb on a Friday 13th.

This forum has been so very helpful. Thank you to EVERYBODY who contributes to it - I feel so much better ordering the Sager now. :spinny:

    You're very welcome (the manuals)

Getting anything good from an insurance company is Damn GOOD luck, it really is. But in only two weeks.....priceless! You're blessed, and now you are getting the "right" computer because of all that has transpired. That my friend is good karma!

For me, that is the only "missing" feature I wish the system had. I do a lot of work at night and nothing compares to a backlit KB once you get use to having one. I guess I have been spoiled with my Dells.

I agree, the backlit keyboard was the only drawback I saw to the Sager. My Alienware spoiled me there. Our living room is pretty dark in the evening (ceilings are too high to change light bulbs without dragging in a ladder - so we mostly use lamps) and an unlit keyboard is going to be strange, particularly when I'm gaming and I make a custom keyboard control for the game. :p

The new product releases are coming hot & heavy aren't they?

Recall my post recently where I said that the best time to buy a new laptop is NEVER. And that is true if you are going to feel bad that xx weeks after you purchase, when some new component comes out. Unless one needs the bleeding edge (& some of you on this Forum do!), and has the coin..... be happy with what you get! Then, when you did not mortgage the farm to get it, a year or two from now, it will be mentally easier to deal with the state of the computers available THEN. Man, they really will be smokin' by THEN.

We are living near the upper edge of power rigs here and it is easy to get carried along with the race. Think, then buy.....but you all knew that, right?

It is no secret that Clevo is testing backlit keyboards, they were showing these off a couple of months ago. The current models have no chance to have this feature. New models that may be coming out in the future...may have it :)

So when these models launch, Do you think the backlit keyboard will be "compatible" with P170HM. I don`t know if its possible, but I mean get my keyboard off, and fit the new one : X
That would be nice. One of my dreams :D

Another question. In our notebook, there are two fans from clevo barebone, that can be speed up with fn + 1. But are the stock gpu and cpu coolers there too. Because when I enter GPU-Z or AMD Catalyst it says fan speed are at like 30% now, but if I press FN + 1, the clevo fans speed up, but it shows 30%.

I received mine back in April I think. I am so happy with it. won't need a laptop for a long time. I just watch the laptop boutiques to keep up on the bleeding edge. I'm a laptop freak. Looking at the latest tablets now. My 8170 is going to satisfy me for years to come. Can you imagine laptops in say 3 or 4 years ...

I too would think the world went right if I could replace my keyboard, ahhh pipe dreams.

I would like a backlit keyboard too. That is the only feature that was missing on these great beasts. Like you RS, I just love mine, and figure on about two years before anything needs to be tweaked. I have been working on video rendering and such and it wails. Going to 16GB was the right thing to do, Adobe Apps definitely like to have room to stretch, so I gave it to 'em.

Anybody else need the manuals? Two Forum users recently emailed me & I sent them out, although neither has thrown me a bone yet (that'd be a "REP POINT" dudes) I'm happy to email the PDFs to you, just private email me so I get your address.

Haven't purchased yet- looking at getting upgraded screen. Reseller is telling me that the 3d screen looks better (in normal viewing) than either of other non-3d high gamut screen upgrades usually offered. It is indeed 120hz, that seems worthwhile in and of itself. And considering the the 485m (required for using the 3d screen) is only $100 more than the 6970, I'm considering going this route even though I'll likely never use 3d. Anyone have any opinions to offer on whether the 3d screen is in fact an improvement over the other 60hz high gamut upgrades?

    Welcome to the Forum!

Private email me & I will send you the manuals (owner's & service) in PDF format. The Hard Drive bays are REAL easy to access. Take a look when you get the manuals and I think you will agree that it is an easy task.

If you are going to replace the HDD that is installed from the reseller, of course you would need to clone the SSD to the OEM drive. I note that the SSD manufacturers have solutions to this job (a cable & software). You could then move the "old" drive to the 2nd (easily accessed) drive position.

I will be doing this myself when I think the SSD prices have reached my price "sweet spot". Not quite there yet, but the curve is definitely going asymptotic......and that is a good thing!

I definitely recommend the upgraded screen on the P170HM (8170) even if you don't plan on using the 3D glasses much. In addition to the higher 120Hz refresh rate - the upgraded screen also has a higher color gamut and much better viewing angles than the stock screen.

Also, with the recent $200 price drop on the 485M - I think it's one of the best deals out there, so now is a great time to buy this package. :)

I think the 3d screen is the same % as the matte high gamut non-3d upgrade: 72%. The 3d screen is matte also.

What do you guys use for a laptop lap desk? I basically need to have the laptop on my lap while sitting on a couch. I have been borrowing a friends wooden lap desk with padding underneath but was wondering if something else was better. (It's not bad) I like to have room for a mouse as well.

I know this isn't the best way to use the laptop but setting it up in the same location isnt an option. Long story lol.

BTW the laptop never goes above 50 degrees Celsius while playing Rift on wooden lap desk. (4 hours play time)

Any recommendations that you have would be appreciated.
