How much was taken off the price by removing the HDD and RAM?

I hope they can remove the CPU and ODD too.

ODD probably, but CPU might be a little hesitant. If you want one that stripped, then best to go to RJ Tech. You can buy a base system without any components (CPU, GPU, Memory, HDD, ODD). -

Yes, I bought my last two laptops from RJTech. It's just that XoticPC is the best when it comes to after-sales support, I think many would agree with me on that.
-
So, when I eventually get this, will all the necessary drivers be installed; or will I have to use a separate disc to install them? Also, what version of NVidia's drivers does the 485M come with?

HELP PLEASE
Im ready to make a move. Looking at NP 7280 with the i7 950 @3.02 with a SINGLE 485m. sager says that the sager 8170 sandybridge is a different class than the 7280 because the 7280 is a desktop cpu.. (i knew that) and that the 7280 performance is better then 8170 and the sandybridge. true or false? I like the looks of the 7280 better... what should i do? go with the 7280 i7 950 or the 8170 2.3 ghz sandy brdge? ill be playing games.. ie; warcraft aion/tera

Hmm I already placed an order for this laptop but I'm wondering if replacing the Geforce 460 for the 470 is worth the $200... seems like alot for not a huge difference

The 470M is in an awkward spot. If it's worth $200 over the 460M, the 485M is definitely worth $295 over it.
That's why I'm choosing between the least and the greatest. -
I'm ordering the np 7280 i7 950 12 gig ram with one nvidia 485m this Monday. Sick system
-
Yeah, you can probably OC the 460m to the performance of the 470m. I know then you can probably OC the 470m even faster, but the gains there are probably minimal. The GTX 485m is effectively the same as 460m in SLI.
-
Hmmm, I will probably request the 470 instead of the 460, better than shipping it back for an upgrade later on down the line.
I've been doing a little research regarding the 2nd generation quad-cores. Apart from the better performance, what are the supposed benefits of the sandy bridge line? Are they simply more efficient? I guess its a little too early to ask seeing as no one actually has one yet, but just thought I would ask the more experience bunch here -
Well, early indications show the low end quad core i7-2630QM is more powerful than pretty much all the previous gen quad cores.
The 470m isn't a bad upgrade for $200. Although if you've ever built your own desktop, you would easily be able to update your own CPU and GPU in these Sagers. But I doubt not for a $200 price bump, most likely significantly more. -
There's an Inspiron 9300 in my house, it weighs 7.7 lbs. Whenever I carry it I say 'when I buy a laptop it will never be a 17' '. I thought clevo produced lighter laptops but I just checked the weight of the 8170, it's 8.6lbs The majority of you guys are probably keeping it stationary
-
I'm 6'5", 200lbs. This machine will feel small to me. My current 15" is flat out too small for my monster hands.
I also have to say, if you heard Clevo made light machines, whoever said that was sorely mistaken. I think 'manageable weight' is the last priority on Clevo's list, if it's there at all. -
-
I thought the same thing and I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 and it's a tank. Gotta be 7 lbs. easy. But it's survived 7 years of travel and one hit by lightning which fried the Ethernet port. I've been using the PCMCIA slot as an Ethernet port ever since.
I am likely to buy a 17" because on the plane I really don't use it I have a Netbook for small stuff. But when I get to where I'm going I need the power a bigger laptop has and I really need it to do everything since in most countries you can't trust internet cafe's. I have nothing on my Netbook worth stealing so I'm not afraid of public WiFi.
But if I had to compromise and use it on a plane I would get a smaller lighter machine than a 17". Power on anything worthwhile is usually pretty low and I can do most things on the Netbook but no big projects.
Laptops need to be pretty tough to travel and it sounds like Sager builds tanks, which is a good thing. -
Question? Does anyone know if it will be possible to activate the switchable graphics (Optimus) in this system?
It sound like it doesn't come installed but with all the customization that is allowed you would think there would be a way?
Also is it worth it upgrading from the i7-2630QM to the i7-2720QM or higher in terms of gaming performance? -
I answer no, to all of your questions, especially to the 2630QM vs 2720QM.
-
Any ideas on the battery life, I know that something like this is going to be on a desk most of the time but still would be nice to at least get 2 hours out it.
Also anyone know what kind of screen this is going to use? I have a Dell Studio XPS 16 with RGB LED screen and I really don't want to give up the screen quality.
The final thing that has been holding me back from ordering is that I heard that the sound quality is usually really bad on Sager's compared to other models so I was just curious if that has any truth to it? This would be my first Sager so coming from mostly dell's and Toshiba's I am a bit nervous. -

How do You phing, shifting of center speaker to the left side (near left speaker) be have an effect on perception of 3D sound? -
If I were to purchase this laptop with the 460, do you think it would be possible to upgrade to the 485 down the road? I see the power requirements are a bit different, does that matter?
-
You can upgrade it later, yes.
-
-
Great thanks for the response. If you purchase this laptop with only 1 HD, does the second hard drive bay come with a caddy for adding a hard drive later? I would think that it would, but my HP laptop required you to buy a caddy, sata cable, etc. seperately to add a hard drive in the second bay.

Last question before I purchase this bad boy. If I don't go with an operating system and just get a disc with drivers and utilities, does that disc come with software to play Blu Rays? Anyone know what "utilities" that disc has?
-
This setup on xotic pc is nowhere near this price (less) -
Yeah because that config is $1454 (non cash)
-
-
Quick question: Does this laptop support Optimus, if I were to select a 485M?
-
No, it does not, and probably won't ever.
-
I mainly asked because I was wondering why I wasn't seeing the $200 price bump between the 460 and the 470 like you mentioned in my own build. Think the reason is once you go with the higher base build of the S1 model some of the price difference is offset. -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Exactly, that is the point of the -S1 derivative...S for Special pricing.
The -S1 derivative starts with an upgraded configuration, but a discounted price over the identical configuration on the standard Sager NP8170, Sager NP8150 or Sager NP7280. -
Still no answer as to why WiDi 2.0 has been disabled for Sager models. Because it's unsupported by Sager
-
I was really hoping they would have Optimus enabled (which then enables use of the onboard IGP) on these high end laptops so I could use the quick sync and widi support -
