I don't see anywhere that it says "pre-order" or "back order" or "estimated ship date". Kind of make me nervous to place my order not knowing when it'll ship. With no info it makes me believe it's available now.

After I've thought about it between the 8130 and 8170, I'm strongly leaning towards the 8170. I do like the idea of future upgradeability, but then again, I can always sell and buy new tech instead for perhaps the same cost difference. I dunno. I really want dual drive bays plus ODD and a 17" since I tend to watch more movies on my laptop these days but hate glossy. I guess a visit to photodon.com is in order.

Also, does the Intel 6300 Ultimate N include bluetooth?

Thank you! +1 for that info.

I'm ready to pull the trigger this week. I hate it when there's no firm dates, always makes me feel as if it will be pushed back and then will be in an endless waiting loop.

I guess it will give me time to sell my  NP8662, and may have to live solely off my M11x for a few weeks until the new one is shipped.

When ever there is brand new technology released there is a chance that there could be a backorder if a flood of orders come in. There will be a stock update tomorrow...

Play it like me. I'm not ordering until stock is in and ready to ship within days.

Sending large sums of money without solid a date of receipt is never a comfortable situation.

That was my other question. Do they take your money right away or wait until it ships? Because if it's right away, I'm waiting until it's available as well...

I'll have the money ready in a couple days, but with my luck I'll have to spend it on something that breaks in my house before it's available and won't get my new friend. :(

Still vacillating between 15" and 17" though... sigh.

I'm 6'5", 200lbs, and 15" is just too small for my gorilla sized arms and hands. It's uncomfortable typing when my hands next to each other cover the entire keyboard.

I'm also realizing that 15" is too small for my field of vision. Only 17", 1080p will satisfy me.

First Post, Hopefully not too general of a sager question.

I have a few questions being a future out of state college student in need of a laptop for Purdue but not able to bring a desktop into a dorm if stuck with another idiot in it. I need some juice for CAD and Gaming and hate anything slower than my desktop phenom ii x3 720 BE and ati 5850.

    1. From what I've seen in benchmarks, the Clevo P170HM with i7-2920XM and nvidia 485m at $2732 lags behind the Clevo X7200 with i7-950 and nvidia 460m sli at $2277.

    2. Is the Clevo P170HM able to run sli 460m/470m/485m? This would make it a bit more attractive.

    3. The x7200 doesn't have the greatest screen so does the Clevo P170HM have similar screen?

I have no problem carrying around the x7200's extra weight and being tied to the wall socket but if the Clevo P170HM can actually last the 2-3 hour battery life it would be advantageous if I'm stuck in a classroom with no wall outlets. Though taking notes with pen and pencil is serious business.

    I'll take point 2 and 3... :)

    2. Is the Clevo P170HM able to run sli 460m/470m/485m? This would make it a bit more attractive. Sorry NO SLI at all for this model

    3. The x7200 doesn't have the greatest screen so does the Clevo P170HM have similar screen? Yes is is the same screen

I have been considering the x7200 but waiting to see what happened with SB. Other than weight, how does P170HM compare to the x7200?

Also, would either laptop support 8GB SODIMMs (I assume x7200 would since if the Eurocom Panther 2.0 is a x7200)?

They are totally different. The P170HM is only 8+lbs and is based on Intel's latest mobile platform. The x7200 has a desktop type platform with a desktop CPU and weighs more than 12+lbs. Yes the x7200 can support the 8GB memory although it is very expensive...

I like 15' model (for portability). But I really want 2 HDD (1 SSD + Traditional HDD). Still decide which model to pick (but most likely 17' one).

So in general, does 17' model have better cooling than 15' one? or in Sager's laptop, there is no difference b/w 17' and 15' in term of cooling. In this case.. NP8170 vs NP 8150?(or maybe I guess, we have to wait for users's reveiw).

Chenavd - If it is similar to the older i7 series, they were both very similar cooling wise. They both have the same dual fan heatsink design.

fernandes: Yeah, I know. But I don't want to carry an external ODD all the time with me (I will most likely travel alot in the near future).

Im looking forward the user reveiw on 15' and 17' model (i won't buy a laptop until april, so I have chance to see other options...brands, models, graphic cards, and hopefully price drop)

I've decided to order with the GTX 460M, so I can upgrade later in the year once more GPUs come out. I don't want to spend $495 now, then later be tempted to spend that much on something better.

    Questions on the NP8170/P170HM:
    1. Is the keyboard lighted now? (its been really useful on my Asus)
    2. Does the 485m have NVIDIA OPTIMUS too? (retailer sites are very clear the 460m/470m has it, but neglect to mention it on the 485m)

My Asus G72gx still has plenty of gas for my gaming, but I asked for a nice, shiny new Sandy Bridge gaming laptop for a late Christmas gift.

I'm leaning towards the 2720 and 485m config, but I'd really like to get an answer on Optimus before I pull the trigger on a pre-order (btw, anyone know if the "S1" model discount only running for pre-orders?)

There is no back lit keyboard on any Clevo/Sager models currently. However, rumor has it they are working on adding them in the future. Also, I don't believe the 485M has Optimus support.

If I were you, I'd take the 6970M assuming it's within 10-15% of 485M and <= $500 (and available obviously).

Yeah there's that as a good, reliable option B. But I'll probably wait until Q4 to see what's happening with the GTX 500M GPUs.

I expect them to follow the GTX 9800M -> GTX 200M cycle, meaning the same die, but optimized and cheaper. So expect GTX 580M to be cheaper than the 485M.

Kevin_Jack2.0 I think I'll follow the same path as you. We can sink or swim together. :)

The 460m seems a pretty decent improvement over my 260m, and in a year or so check out the GPU market for new tech. Or when Battlefield 3 is released, my guess would be end of this year.

Also @bartman8888 I believe all new mobile nVidia GPU's *SUPPORT* Optimus, but it still has to be implemented on the mainboard and through driver support, which it is NOT for any of these Sager/Clevo models so far.

From a power perspective, I would like to use the integrated CPU graphics for non-gaming at 45W (and it's no slouch on performance either) and let Optimus power down the ~100W 485m chip to extend battery life (and probably extend the life of the 485m chip and thermal compound). My Asus G72gx gets ~1 hour on battery which sucks when you're watching a movie "on the go". The retailers don't talk about battery life on the latest Sandy Bridge/Optimus gaming laptops, but I expect it to be somewhere well into the 2hr range even for a 17" screen (not under load, of course).

    Is my theory sound?

@htwingnut - I have long suspected that Optimus was an additional license fee, and gaming laptop vendors chose not to implement integrated graphics and other required changes on their models to reduce costs.

The NP8130 AND the NP8150 are the only ones shipping now of these new systems. As far as the NP8170, a very short couple of weeks or so before it comes out of the gates. Of course by pre-ordering it you will be among the first.. :)

Yeah. Now I'm thinking again (dangrous, I know)...

If I can buy the 8130, it will save me ~ $250 over the 8150 or 8170. That's less money spent and can put it towards a new laptop if/when something much better comes out. So $500 for GTX 485m + $250 for 15" = $750 that could go towards a new laptop even in six months, sell the 8130 for $750, that's $1500 towards a new laptop with newer tech. Then maybe I'll go 17"... I'd like an internal Blu-ray, but guess I can live with my external for now, because I want a dual ssd/hdd setup.

ok need some advice please. I was hooked on the NP 7280 with just one 485m card not sli. I like the design and overall look, plus you can always upgrade to sli with this model. AND it comes with the 5 speaker+ sub in it. But with the 8170, I get the sandy bridge, with 2 500 meg drives blu ray player and more ram.. 12 gig for almost the same price as the NP 7280.

My question is this, is it that really a big upgrade going to sandy bridge? I was gunna get the np 7280 with the 3.02 ghz and the 8170 which i can afford only the 2.3 ghz, is slower than the 7280 at 3.02 ghz. I need some advice as to what to do. it almost seems that the 8170 is a better option considering it comes with more memory and bluray and 2 hardrives. I am going to be gaming fyi. Thanks in advance!!!

That seems like a great plan but on the difficulty side how hard is it to upgrade a GPU in a Sager?
