meraki1990, I'm not sure about it. I guess that only products shipping from a company are exposed to VAT. Can someone clarify it, please?
-
Yeah, to avoid huge taxes, though it's not technically legal,
I think you could ask someone to ship it( a trustworthy person I guess. )
to their address and then send it to you as if it is a gift..
Maybe it will work? And you'll only be paying that person a small fee, and I guess that would be way less than paying the VAT. -
Edit: As meraki said above, it's likely not. -
Well, in my case I will overpay something between 1000/1150 $ just for shipping and that damn VAT. But if we will look at this thing from another side, it's very difficult to a find laptop like this one in Norway and even if it's at the store right after my house, the price will be insanely high.
Unfortunately I don't have any trustworthy friends in USA.. Seems like I have to accept this as it is. Ouch... -
I am sure there are NBR members with good rep who would be willing to help if you ask nicely -
Yeah, that's what a forum is good for..

There are certain chipsets that support CFX and SLi, the laptop must be equipped with that chipset.
Also, you have to have another PCI-e slot, to hold another gfx card.
You must have a CFX cable or a SLi cable and the cards must be able to support CFX or SLi (They have to have connectors)
And they have to have dedicated cooling systems to keep the gfx cards and the CPU cooled..
which means it is usually very thick, bulky, and heavy, as the added weight of the fan, heatsink, and the gfx card brings it up over 10 pounds... -
Can anyone confirm that the touchpad is or is not able to handle multi-touch (such as two finger scrolling)?
I was -this- close to ordering one when I read one review that says it does not. -
It is a Synaptics-powered, multi-touch touchpad. It supports two-finger scrolling, pinch zoom, two-finger pivot rotate and three-finger flick.

Hello,
I am planning to buy clevo p170hm. May you say me how bad or good the fan noise is? For example, may you compare with clevo m571tu?
Regards -
Noise level:
Clevo P170HM (GTX470)|| Clevo M570RU (8800M GTX)
Idle 31.5 / 35.3 / 38.2 dB || 32.7 / 37.4 / 42.8 dB
HDD 32.1 dB || 35.2 dB
DVD 38.9 / dB || 49.3 / dB
Last 40.9 / 43.9 dB || 45.9 / 48.2 dB -

OK - back to the fans.
Thanks for everyone that clarified that the Fn 1 affects the fan. I assume that all it does it turn it on "high".
What I am really looking for is a control profile to control the RPM based on temp. I tried speedfan a long time ago, but I did not think it worked well.
Is everyone just "dealing" with the cycling of the fans?
Also, are there any other "undocumented" Fn commands?
Thanks,
R -
It would be nice if clevo will make further bios updates to get control of the fans.

For travel (maybe just 3 times a year), just live with the 15" screen...and enjoy the smaller form factor/weight. Sorta too bad that the 17" doesn't add too much internally (just 1 disk drive slot?) compared to the 15". Would've been nice to have a more spread out keyboard... -

1. P170HM not only has capacity for an extra HDD, its also RAID capable which is important to me.
2. The chipset in the P170HM allows for CPU overclocking, the P150HM's does not. Once the system begins to age a little I may need to do this to keep the CPU related part of my windows experience rating over 7 Hahahha!
3. If the Mayans were right and the planet goes to the dogs in 2012 I may need to use my laptop as a weapon in post apocalyptic warfare. In this case the 17 incher would definitely do more damage than P150HM ^_^ -

While obviously not on the same level as the 485m, it would be nice to know how the 470 does in this rig. Did anyone order and receive this model with the 470 before the intel shenanigans started?
-
Marvin H Muckley III ordered the 470m.

This looks pretty interesting in case anyone wants some more USB ports and storage. RunCore USB 3.0 Express SSD offers 64GB of storage and two ports in one killer device -- Engadget
BTW how many USB 3.0 ports is on this laptop? -
-
And no ExpressCard slot...
-
To be honest it can handle pretty much anything I throw at it, but while you do have the 470M, I recommend to be patient and wait and check for the price to upgrade to the 6970m when it comes out. It might be the perfect upgrade for people on a tighter budget!
That being said, the 470M is a very nice card and for me, is a perfect card to use before deciding on the 485M or the 6970M before sending it back due to the recall! -
Anyone know if the HM67 Chipset experiences the same slowdowns with SSD's due to cpu power settings as do previous chipsets?

Hey Notebookreview members,
I'm new here, and I am one of many waiting for his p170hm Clevo notebook .
I'm going to order my laptop through a distributor in Belgium. "bytesatwork"
with the following specifications i7 2630qm. "maybe the 2720qm" GTX470 and 8GB DDR3 1600MHz ram "as the same price to 1333mhz" + 120gb OCZ vertex2.
for the price of 1,606 or 2,173.99 USD
But I still have some questions addressed to the members already in possession of a Clevo p170hm "RhyStar"since the distributor here yet I can answer my questions yet, because there Clevo barebones delivery was delayed by the intel bug.
Question 1: can someone tell me how loud this notebook is, because I read on the Internet experiences ranging from quiet to very loud?
Question 2: I have no experience with the brand Clevo, but I wonder or they release BIOS updates on a regular base.
Thanks, have to say this is a great forum!!!!
ps Sorry for my bad english. -
Clevo / Sager do not update the BIOS very regularly, and it is quite sparse as far as options are concerned. But to be honest, I haven't had a need to update the BIOS with my previous Sager. But they will update if need arises. -
-
I read the notebookcheck review, the Matte AUO159D screen that will be available in february seems really good.
I wish sager resellers will offer it as a choice then with no overcharge. -
-
Hey all - I will try to do some work over the weekend - and I am not on that PC now, but I'll say the following....
I agree with what others have said;
The laptop is not loud at all, and I think it runs very cool. As I complained about before, the fans do some funky things though. There are clearly two sets of fans, and one of them (CPU?) is hard to figure out. Check out my previous posts on the matter.
It is not a big deal, and I am already getting used to it.
I'll try to do more testing and benching, and post my own review of sorts. FYI, the vendor that I bought it from has promised to replace the motherboard as part of the Intel recall when the time comes. Since the hard drives are not on the SATA channels affected by the problem, I am not worried.
More to come,

OK here are some numbers;
3DMark06 - 17944
Max CPU temps during the test ranged from 66-74° C.
Max GPU temp during the test was 64° C.
I did not realize that a separate CPU score was provided in the results, so I will run it again and see what that # is.
FYI, this was the free version of 3DMark06 downloaded today, and you really can't change anything in the settings.
I'll post the CPU score shortly.
R -
3DMark06 CPU score was 6015.
Comparing these numbers to notebookcheck.com benchmark lists, my machine perfromed well.
R -
I'd be curious to see 3DMark 11 benchmark results too if you have the time.
i7-2720QM + GTX 485m
3DMark06 = 19702 3DMarks
SM 2.0 = 7983
SM 3.0 = 8838
CPU = 5808 -
3DMark 11 does not look as good - P2210.
1999 graphics
6147 physics
19.52 physics frames
I was trying to install the latest nvidia drivers but for some reason the installer cannot find my 470M. Is this a problem or is it a Clevo thing?
Thanks,
R -
265.77 I believe is the latest, and is what is supplied with your laptop. nVidia has to update to include these video cards. Hopefully with one of the next iterations they will include them.
-
Actually, 266.58 is the latest, according to the nvidia website?
Did you do a 3DMark 11 on your 485M machine?
R -
Right now the only games installed are L4D2 and Amnesia, dark descent.
R -
Yeah I wrote a whole review on my machine including 3DMark 11 benchmark:

question, whats the difference between the glossy displays? One has 90% NTSC Color Gamut and the other has 72% NTSC Color Gamut. Is it worth the price and how significant will the display be as far as how it looks?
edit - my fault, the matt has the 72% and the glossy upgrade has the 90%. In that case, I just want to know the difference between the 2 glossy's ignoring the matt. so stock glossy vs upgraded glossy. -
There is a thread that has comparison pictures. We don't have the 17" stuff up yet, but that is coming soon, but you can see the difference between the normal screen and the high gamut screens in the 15.6" size, and the 17's will be the same. Basically higher gamut will have better color representation and reproduction.
thanks! -
