Yikes, your dream of $1400 w/ quad SB + 470M will be dashed by hundreds. I expect the base to start around $1750.

I'm really excited for this model, as it will be my first new chassis in almost 3 years. I'll either sell the M86 to my brother for pennies, or gift it to my mother.

Still deciding on whether I should wait until the smoke is lifted on the 6970M.

when I configure sager laptops with current quad i7's and 470m's the price is usually at least $1600 usd so ya $1400 would be great but it doesn't look like thats going to happen.

And when are the 6970's suppose to start shipping with laptops? AW comes out with them this week but I haven't heard of any other company using them yet?

Not sure. There was a post run through Google Translate, where a Clevo employee said 6900M was coming to their machines in March.

I'm wondering if Clevo signed a timed exclusivity deal w/ Nvidia, or AW signed one with AMD.

Are there any mobile SB i7's that'll perform just as good or better than an i7-950 lke the one in the Clevo x7200/Sager 7280?

An overclocked i7-2920XM might match or exceed it, but that's hardly cost effective.

how can you guys say that base unit will be usd 1750 are you serious?

a base unit will have a gtx 460m+4gb ram+500 gb hdd+2630qm so for that usd 1750 is ridiculous

If you buy from mySN the starting price for the P170HM will be 1299 € (with the lowest possible setup though). But that's with taxes and everything, it will be lower in the US.

Daniel, did they remove the link? I can't find it on their site.
Plus, if the base configs start with a dual-core, say the i7-2620M, it's going to be at least $100 to upgrade to the lower quad-core models.

Im also looking into joining the club! I do have some questions though.

1.) If I get the 460 graphics card can I upgrade later on down the road?

2.) Will I be able to get a better cpu as well??

3.) Would you recommend geting IC Diamond thermal compound on this to keep it cool or stock should do fine?

If those could be answered I would appreciate it.

So its better in the long run to grab a x7200 with dual 460m's then? I think someone mentioned that the 485m matches sli 460m's so that's why I'm considering the np8170. But I'm not sure if I should sacrifice the CPU power from stock and potential upgrades since I need it for 3d, video editing, audio, etc....Advice, is a x7200 upgrade around the corner? Oh and whats this backlight keyboard nonsense? Thanks

I got to thinking for future references, so lets say something comes after the 485, which im sure there will be, and I have not yet upgraded to to the 485, with the new proccessor in the 8170 would it be possible to even use the newer gpu's that come out?

@BabyHemi those specs look lovely! I made my purchase not too long ago, once I finalize things ill post the specific specs I got for my systtem.

When new GPUs are released for the P170HM, you can upgrade regardless of what GPU/CPU are already in it.

I think I'm gonna go 2630QM + GTX 485M once I get my funds together. Though I am tempted to take the 460M and then waiting for 6900M benches.

Thats good to know then! I did the same but if you have the money then go for it! But some things that I thought about were maybe issues that might happen with the card as it is new and Id like to know any issues or comparions before getting it.

Forget the 6900M. nVidia's got a lot going for it and their "meant to be played" program does pay off with better game compatibility. That combo you have in mind is perfect.

well i really thought the price will be better lets just hope this chassis will support the upgrade of 28nm gpus and 22nm cpus 1 yr later but who knows maybe intel s ivy bridge will require a new mobo like the penryn and merom parts during core 2 era

and like i7 940xm gets beaten by 2630qm definately i7 2820qm or upcoming 2840qm will be beaten by entry level quad core mobile procs of the ivy bridge

i am in dilemma about 2630qm vs 2720qm vs 2820qm please help me

there isnt much difference between 2720qm and 2820qm only 2mb of l3 cache will it really make much of a difference?

the reason i am interested in 2820qm because i saw its review in the anandtech site and i was blown away by its power. it beats i7 920 desktop. I myself currently now running a phenom IIx4 945 quad core and its also very good for multitasking and gaming.

so which one you guys choose for 2720qm vs 2820qm? for the 2mb l3 cache impact?

for 2630qm vs 2720qm i think there is slight noticable difference in terms of turbo boost and stock clocks so it will make a difference right?

also 2630qm price is USD 346 though its OEM and 2720qm is USD 378 so why is sager charging +150 for the upgrade????

Babyhemi Whats the price for Clevo P170HM barebone with gtx 460m and Gtx 470m? I hope for gtx 460m within USD 950 please pm me their prices.

I don't think so, because the transition from SB to IB is not as big as the transition from Nehalem to SB.

I'm in the same boat mate, don't know what to choose. RAM confused me a bit but I'm now convinced that I have no use for anything more than 8GB.

P151HM1 is very good for the price heck it even gives 8gb ram but price of p170hm is about 100 usd high i really want a 17 to 18.4 inch chassis

if i cant get a good cut on the p170hm barebone i guess i will take a qosmio with 460m+2630qm within usd 1400

does any one of you guys know whether the qosmio gtx 460m is ocable ? and can the processor be upgraded?

    does a 2630qm perform like a desktop i5 760?

Was planning on getting a Asus G73 but been looking at this now and have to say I'm very tempted... hoping to have a few questions answered by those in the know before completely deciding however.

First of all, I'm planning to go with the 2630QM and GTX460M for now and then hopefully upgrade at the end of the year or beginning of next to possibly a better CPU and most definitely a faster GPU (GTX485M). Figure 8GB Ram seems to be enough for my needs, and planning on buying it with a 120GB SDD and 500GB Hybrid and a Blu-Ray drive.

    Anyways, my questions:

1 - The case, hows the build quality and how cool/hot does it run during extended use and under stress?

2 - Screen quality, how are blacks, colour representation, brightness and overall performance of the case screen.

3- Upgrading CPU/GPU, how much more difficult will this be for this laptop compared to upgrading a CPU/GPU in a desktop tower?

4 - Is it reasonable to expect the price of the 2820QM and the GTX485M to drop by the start of next year..?

5 - Ram, what sort of memory do manufacturers/dealers normally include in notebooks, is it worth going with the minimum amount and then swapping it for some higher quality memory myself?

Thanks for any & all help, sorry for any ignorant question... mostly used to desktops and this will be a nice replacement for my ageing machine.

I think what he was asking was if the new GPUs would necessarily function with 8170. Provided clevo supports 6900m and future nvidia GPUs, you just need to get the appropriate heatsink with the gpu (which you get automatically from a sager reseller) and bios update.

Now, to the question of IF these GPUs will be supported, it seems likely all GPUs for next calendar year should be supported given a new chassis won't hit until next year when Ivy Bridge comes out.

It is a bit pre-mature to be able to answer questions about build quality, screen quality, heat and the like because no one has one yet.

We are only taking Pre-orders at this time. Sager expects to begin shipping with all video cards around the end of January.

I am curious though, if you are going to get an SSD as your primary boot drive, what do you see as the advantage to getting a Hybrid drive for your storage drive?

By the beginning of next year not only will the prices have dropped some, but both the CPU and GPU will have been replaced by newer technology.

If you can actually tell the difference in every day real world use between different "quality" memory you would be unique. Be careful of the marketing boys out there :) Don't be tempted to fall into their testosterone trap.

    Thanks for the reply Paladin...

Was under the (false) impression people already had the laptop as I saw 3Dmark results posted earlier, but guess that was manufacturer benchmarks rather than user run tests.

On the subject of a Hybrid drive, does it not improve load times compared to a regular 7200rpm HDD when accessing or launching programs/files stored on it... and I take it CAS latency isn't as big a deal as I've assumed?

Have pretty much set my sights on this laptop now, just a case of waiting for a review or first hand impressions before being completely be sold on it at this point. :D

If you have your OS and software applications on your primary SSD then you would tend to use your 2nd HDD for storage only, thereby negating any real value of the Hybrid drive there.

Latency is something nice to talk about, but I'll bet I could hand two computers each to 100 people and few if any could tell me, after using them for a week, which one had the lower latency memory.

This is true. This model can be upgraded by the user to any video card compatible now and in the future... :)

That's a completely different model though.

I'm done with 15" machines, permanently.

I'm going to wait and see on what happens with the ES scene. I configured a nice barebones kit at $1647, w/o the CPU. If the 2720QM and 2820QM engineering samples come out around $300 to $500, I can save up to $400 over the retail model. If the ES don't come out, I'll just go with a reseller prebuilt, 2630QM + 485M, and will wait for the 2x40QM to appear later.

    It's win/win, really.

    Some questions:
    1. Intel Wireless Display (WiDi) is supported?
    2. Second hard drive cuddy is always included? If not how much is it? (planning to add a second hdd later)
    3. Could be GPU switched dynamically (on a fly without reboot or bios setting change) between nVidia and built-in Intel?

Don't mean to be a pest, but do you guys know which laptop would be best for future upgrades between the x7200 and 8170?
