I had also been heavily researching and debating between NP 5170 and XPS 17 3D, and envy 17 3D for a while. I reason i look for the the 3D version is that i need the FHD screen. At that time XPS 17 non-3D did not have the option of a FHD screen.

I made a decision to order the envy 17 3D base model April 6 taking advantage of the 25% off discount. The final cost i pay is $1250 including tax, shipping. My config: i7-2630qm, 6G, 750GB 5400RPM, Blu-ray , 6-cell. etc. I heard from envy owners that it has a high quality screen that people have ever seen. Hope it is true. The estimated shipdate is April 26. It is about $200 more than the XPS17 but better GPU, blu-ray drive, and backlit keyboard, blue-tooth, and 3D glasses. Probably better form factor. I had inspiron too. and it is certainly bulkier. The only thing is the 5400RPM drive i plan on swap it out with a SSD once i get it.

Only the 5170 is getting the update right now as Sager has updated us.

The 5160 did change the default screen which was 1366x768 to 1600x900 HD+

Haha, I like how you guys updated the NP 5170 to 5175 quicker than Sager themselves did.

@Justin Please send me a PM once the 5165 is available. I need to get back in contact with Brett to finish up the order that I put on hold b/c of the new card.

These new models with GT 555M seem very interesting.
I remember old posts in this thread where it was said that the GT 540M is soldered to the motherboard in these barebones. Do you already know if it is the same thing for the GT 555M or if it will be upgradable ?

I had just placed my order for the sager np 5170. I was all excited then found out yesterday that the np 5175 was just released with the nvidia 555gpu. Bummed out. I had to cancel my order.

Will it be the GDDR5 version of the GT 555M?

no change in the cooling I presume, so will it cause an increase in the heat problems?

jealous of those that get this better GPU merely 2 months after I got mine with the 540M, but that seems always to be the way it is. As soon as you buy something, something better comes out, just around the corner. I could not have waited another 2 months easily. was hell enough waiting for the Sandy Bridge problem to sort out, having ordered mine late January, and relying on a crap old vaio in the meantime.

too bad not the faster GDDR5 version, but still will crush the 540M in SC2 fps, which is the only graphics intensive application I run. Looks like it gets playable fps on high settings, whereas the 540M can only get playable fps on medium at best. this is definitely worth the wait for anyone buying now.

Well, 555m with DDR3 is actually better than the version with DDR5, as it has many more shaders and wider memory bus (albeit having slower DDR3 memory)... Confused?

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-geforce-gt-555m-us.html

PS: IMO adding 555m to the 5160/70 line is a very smart move from Sager, especially if they can manage the heat. If implemented nicely, the 5165 would probably make me regret buying the XPS 15...

Anyone had or having bluish tint issues with the 5170 display?

I purchased two of them and both have a very noticeable blue tint to them.

Comparisons between my other laptop display and my desktop monitor can be seen at the following link:

Comparing Display Colors - Home Theater Forum and Systems - HomeTheaterShack.com

I have contacted XoticPC and hopefully we can adjust it to a more accurate color. I tried, but made it worse. I cannot seem to get the grays to be accurate.

I have a service email going with XoticPC and they are in contact with Sager to hopefully find out if there is a cool temperature setting that we can change to neutral or warm... or if they know of more accurate settings.

This sounds like it is native to the display, but it is anything but normal as far as color accuracy.

It is going to be the same for the NP5175 too. Also, your laptop display seems to have a slight reddish tint to it. I figured maybe it was a trick on my eyes since the bluish sager was next to it but it seems to definitely have a reddish tint.

Looks like people are going to have to order a higher gamut screen in order to counter the effects of the bluish or reddish tint. That's just unfortunate :(

While my laptop has a warmer color to it (slight red tint) it is not that bad, but the last pic I show is of my desktop and it is very neutral. You can still see a DRASTIC difference and VERY noticeable blue tint on the 5170.

    My exact thoughts.

On that desktop... that is a pic of my forum, which I designed to be shades of gray in the center areas there.

The Firefox skin is the same on both computers... same theme, same everything. Compare the tannish beige portion of Firefox (near the top) to the one on the 5170... amazingly blue.

I received my W170HN a week ago. Here are some of my initial impressions.

My display was not too bad to begin with but I managed to calibrate it to a level where I am quite happy with it. I have a 1920 x 1080 glossy screen.

The sound is very quiet, particularly with voices. Music is okay, but I find voice chat and watching instructional videos near impossible. I've just downloaded the latest drivers and I will see if that helps.

The biggest issue for me is battery life. I am getting under 2 hours in UMA mode with web browsing use (VGA light is green, laptop indicates that it is in UMA made). This is less than half of what was indicated. What sort of battery life is everyone else getting?

@Shekkinah - congrats on your new laptop!

If it's same as mine, press Fn + 5 (that's the number 5 at top and not F5), that will activate the surround sound.

edit: posted in wrong forum. :(

I have a question regarding using a dual screen. When using either just the laptop screen or an external, my GPU idles at only about 40-42C. But if I run a dual display while using the laptop screen and an external, it idles considerably higher like around 60C. Any idea why that is? I mean running two 1080p screens in 2D shouldn't tax the machine that much more. Heck an old GeForce 6600 can do that without a sweat.

Hoping there's an update to fix this sometime in the future.

EDIT: DANGIT I meant this to go in NP8170 forum... :(

My power supply started making sparking noises where it comes in from the wall (Near "Be careful, may become hot!"). I guess I need to inquire about a replacement. It still works but it is an annoying high pitched noise and smells slightly of burning. Would it be better to contact XOTICPC or sager?

@asuka10456 The sound is really clear (but lacking bass, obviously), it's just unfortunate that the speakers are on the bottom. It still sounds fine on a table but on your lap it will be muffled.

I just got my NP5175 yesterday, and this is the first I've read about the blue tint issue. I can confirm it's true. I've spent the last 30 minutes comparing colors, and my old laptop definitely displays colors more "truly." Most notably, black is black on my old laptop. On my new one, black has a slight but noticeable blue glow. That said, the screen is far more vibrant... I almost feel like my old laptop has its brightness lowered in comparison because it lacks the same vividness.

I also notice that flesh tones are slightly more blue, but would I have noticed it had I not read about it? No. Never. What will probably continue to bother me is that I don't feel I'm achieving true black. It helps if I tilt the screen back more for some reason.

Is this a deal killer? Not for me, no. What kills me is how horrible the space bar is. It is truly terrible.

Actually, I just compared the website in Sonnie Parker's post side-by-side with my screen, and mine DEFINITELY does not look nearly as blue as his. I'm also comparing the website side-by-side with my old laptop, and I don't really notice a difference.

While I do notice the blue tint (again, with achieving true black), I can say with absolute assurance that, at least in my case, it isn't to the degree that Sonnie Parker is experiencing it. Perhaps some people have it worse than others?

Well, for me there were just too many issues related to build quality I found to be substandard = worse than my old Dell Inspiron laptop. So I ultimately returned it for a full refund and bought the new Dell XPS 17 as a replacement. I love this new XPS 17 - way nicer for my usage in almost every way. Plus it saved me a few hundred dollars after rebates. For more details see my thread here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo-reviews-owners-lounges/568717-sager-np5170-build-quality-sent-back.html. Maybe it will save some of you the time and hassle of ordering these lower end Sager models, then possibly having to return it or regret your purchase.

Edit: Forgot to mention, I have the 5175 with the GT 555M card.

I just got mine yesterday fro XoticPC. Installed windows and followed the instructions on installing the drivers from the CD but it the screen is flickering and distorted fairly frequently. It's almost like the artifacts you get from overclocking a card too much, but not quite.

I tired downloading the latest drivers from the internet, using both WHQL and default and the problem is still there. Oddly enough it doesn't seem to occur when I'm playing a video or Starcraft. It's just very odd. I'm going to try and do another install of windows and try downloaded drivers instead of the ones from the CD to test. I also have a spare LCD that I can install to check, but I don't want to introduce new factors unless it's just driver or gfx card issue.

Has anyone else experienced this screen flicker/distortion issue? It's intermittent and comes and goes. This is all while the laptop is just sitting on a desk and is cool and stationary.

You just need the caddy and the drive you want to add. Unscrew the retaining screw on the old optical drive, pull it out, mount the new drive in the caddy with the included hardware (may need to put the old brackets from the optical drive on to the caddy, as well as the bezel), put in the caddy and put the screw back in. It's really painless.

You can check with your reseller, or just look to buy a standard 12.7mm SATA to SATA hard drive caddy online. (most resellers sell them separately anyway)

I don't think it shows poor build quality, but I think some internal part came loose on my NP5170 and got wedged in the cooling fan. As a result I had to ship mine back to Sager for repair. The nonfunctioning cooling fan caused it to overheat and shut down pretty quickly.

I was pleasantly surprised to realize that the shipping was free (3 day UPS) and there will be zero charges for repairs, because I am still within the one year period after purchase. I did not even spring for any special warranty upgrades or anything. Will see how fast the turnaround is.

Maybe they can also fix my microphone. Whether I use onboard mic or external mic, I was having problems getting it to work with Skype and Starcraft 2. It worked sporadically at first and now not at all. Tried updating drivers to no effect.

Assuming quick turnaround on the repair, I will remain a satisfied customer.

Okay so my wife lost the damn ac power adapter for my Sager NP5170 last week on a trip and I need to acquire a replacement. If anyone has one available for sale, please let me know. I also need the model number of the power adapter, if anyone has one and can read it and post it here for me. I have contacted Sager tech support for the model number and suggestions of where I can buy one, as XOTICPC no longer carries the power adapters for this model or for any similar model (like the 5160, 5165, or 5175). Thanks.

new here so please don't flame me if i am posting this in wrong area.

I own a Mecer W170HN laptop. I have read that these are actually Clevo W170HN. Is this true?

I need to replace the DC-in jack on the motherboard, but do not know whichone I need. Can anyone help me figure out which one I need and where I can obtain it, so i can repair this laptop? Please. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you compared the two side by side on the Internet. If they look the same then they are.

DC jacks are pretty standard, measure the inner diameter, outer diameter and figure out the type (probably barrel with no centre pin)
