It has been pointed out recently that Clevo and Sager both recommend the Intel SSD's like the 510 and the 320 series. Compatibility and a lower failure rate was noted. :)

    Official Sager NP5165

I have similar heat issues and I am very disapointed since this was not a cheap notebook.
Did anyone else reply to your post by Email? or do you know how to reduce the heat.../ set fan speed to the max permanently..
    Play with the BIOS?

    thanks a lot,

    disapointed BTO P book user

FN+1 (the number 1, not F1) should bump the fans to max speed. You can also try repasting the CPU/GPU if you're having unusually high temps- you may have had a poor initial thermal pasting on it.

Any chance the BIOS update unlocks some BIOS functions (like XMP profiling)?

I just finally got my laptop today, and I've seen this shortcut all over this place. However, when I press FN + 1, absolutely nothing happens. What's going on?

I can't remember if I posted this here ... but just in case ... a heads up.

I have a Corsair Force GT (120Gb) and it does not work in the main slot of my 5165. It will not boot at all. However it works fine in the caddy. Sadly it's on SATA2 so it sucks being gimped like that.

If anyone knows of a fix I'm all ears ... I haven't found anything yet. I have confirmed it is not the SSD. It works perfectly in my Lenovo Y560 and desktop with a clean windows install. Firmware is up to date as well.

    It works.

    Even in Linux.

Any other unlabeled hotkeys I should be aware of?

It should work independent of OS anyway, as it's tied to the embedded controller/bios :)

Other than this shortcut, there aren't any other "hidden" ones on this model that I'm aware of. The P170HM has on other key, but that's the only other model that does. The standard hotkeys are all listed in your user manual though.

My laptop is sitting on my bed, with no bottom ventilation, and it feels colder than room temperature.

The CPU idles around 43C and I do have the IC Diamond.

Thanks for the Fn+1 combo. I didn't know that ... and it will come in handy I'm sure.

    -----

Another question though .... What is the newest BIOS version for the 5165? I can't find anything on the Sager site. Maybe I'm just missing it.

Has anyone tried Kingston HyperX SSD

I'm planning to get NP5165 with HyperX SSD 240GB
If the SSD doesn't work in the main slot then i'll have to go with intel 510

    Thanx

Is Fn + 1 a toggle? I'm trying it and it's not obvious which state it's in because if the fan comes on at what sounds like full and I press Fn+1 nothing seems to happen immediately.

I updated to the lastest BIOS posted here just recently.

Yep, it's just a simple toggle. Fn +1 will turn it on at full speed. Press it again and the fans will go back to automatic fan speed controls. It should be nearly immediate going back and forth except in the case that automatic fan speed happens to mean full speed (like when gaming/benchmarking).

Unfortunately, there's no way to control the fans right now. There could be an update in the future. All you can do is the max fan speed toggle that was mentioned earlier.

This laptop is pretty bare in the sensor department. CPU coretemp, GPU, and HDD. That's it.

I believe a program like Speedfan will still give you temps/fan RPM's, even if you aren't able to change them. I'm not sure if it's able to give RPM's for these models though.

Can anyone help me with a BIOS update for my Clevo W150HRM?

I've been sent the BIOS_108 folder from my vendor but I don't know what to do with the thing.

Folder contents are as attached image. Thanks in advance.

I got my W150HR two days ago and I realy like this LT. I have been wanting a nice LT for a long time. My old one was so slow and annying!

Anyway is there anyway to force the GT 555M to be active at all times? I can not see anyway to disable the onboard Intel. I saw a post on Page 67 about using the power savings plan, but I could not get any changes in any of those to force the GT 555M to be active at all times.

The latest BIOS version is v_107, you can download it at my vendors website: BTO Notebooks. In order to be able to update the BIOS at start, you need to make a bootable USB: pick one of the methods at How To Boot From A USB Flash Drive. Method 2 worked for me.

So is 1.00.01 the latest? I'm wondering too hehe.

Hey guys, i just got my W150HR whoop whoop.
All good, I'm just a bit sceptical about my cpu temps...
after a couple of minutes of Crysis 2 my cpu temps are hitting 90+
    I got the 2670qm if that's a difference.
    Is this too high?

Also, for some reason fn + 1 doesnt seem to work. Though i got the latest bios 1.07.

Those temps are a little high. I'd say you might want to repaste it if you're able, or check with your reseller about it. Temps over 90C are hot for GPU's and extremely unusual for CPU's. You meant you had the 2760 correct?

Running prime95 now for 10mins, 2cores are around 82/83C and the the other 2 around 76/79C but the fan is blowing now.
When I was playing Crysis 2 the fan wasnt on 100% all the time.

Mythlogic, one of the resellers, said that 1.00.01 is the latest so you only need BIOS 107. I updated to BIOS 107 last night without a problem.

From what I have read FN+1 is only on a Sager machine. I do not know if it is part of the BIOS or EC, but from what I understand it is only available on a Sager chassis. Mine is not from Sager and FN+1 does not do anything with the fan on my machine either.

My temps of the CPU are hitting 80+ with the arctic silver paste. The only thing you can do temporarely is disabling the turbo mode to lower your CPU temps (advanced powerplan of CPU on 99%).

    another happy owner reporting in.

Got it basically stock w/ the hybrid seagate HDD upgrade.

V nice machine aside from retarded keyboard layout (numpad where the . normally is an enter, arrow keys seem 'off' and enter key too small), and pathetic speakers.

Wish I spent the cash on the matte screen LOL but as it is the normal screen is already heaps better than most consumer POS screens, esp at 1080p. Though having said that I really do wish Clevo offered a 1600x900 option which I would have preferred, as text is a bit too small and GT555M is a bit underpowered for 1080p. (I did ask my seller)

FWIW my Fn+F1 turns the touchpad off or on!!!!!

you can increase text size in os options. gt555m underpowered for 1080p? i don't even use it for 1080p as integrated graphics handle it just fine. as for fn+f1, most people know that as it's displayed on keys. what they don't know is that sager model has fn+1 to turn on/off fans.

The speakers on that particular unit are normal for a laptop and I see a lot of reports of the speakers sounding "tinny." Most of what you are buying is for the performance anyway, so if the speakers are a concern you might also want a good set of external speakers or headphones.

For the occasional youtube movie it's just fine. But if you want to play a movie or music you will miss a subwoofer, external speakers or a headphone are recommended. You can play around a little bit with the THX software to increase lower sounds, but don't expect a miracle.

Hi! I've been thinking about getting one but I had a couple of questions and I hope this is an adequate location to ask as everyone here is an owner or future owner of the NP5165 :)

    1. What is the battery life like if I have Optimus on and I'm just doing general internet/word processing/basic stuff? Would I be able to have it on during a 3-4 hour class without it dying on me?
    2. Is there much of a point to upgrading the internal wifi to the Advanced or Ultimate Intel options?
    3. I'm kind of confused on how people decide which reseller to go to since the pricing and configurations all seem almost the same. On all the sites they seem to advertise price matching, so if I do get to the point that I'm ready to purchase, how do you decide which one to go with? I've looked through the FAQ in the Sager/Clevo forum and it seems like xoticpc/mythlogic/lpc-digital all have almost the same pricing models & reputation. How did you guys decide which reseller to go with?

Thanks for the help guys and I apologize if this was a poor location to post this!

1.) Battery life is rated around 3-5 hours if you turn down the display a bit, so it should be able to get you through classes OK.
2.) A wifi card upgrade would be beneficial if you were looking for a bit more options like dual channel support and faster throughput, but it won't increase your internet speed of course. It will help you maintain a lot better connection. I never suggest more than the Intel Advanced though because a lot of the features on the other cards are only supported if your router supports it. If you're going to school I doubt they would have the more expensive routers that support things like MIMO, etc.
3.) Feel free to send me and the other resellers emails or PMs and we'd be happy to offer you quotes and tell you about our benefits. Really, you'll want to go with the company that you feel gives the best support. :)

Just received my Sager NP5165 with these upgrades on Wednesday. So far everything has worked great, and with this being my first laptop I was pretty excited.

I've been playing the BF3 beta on it, in Metro my CPU temps are around 83 degrees C and on Caspian Border (way bigger map + more players) it gets to about 90 degrees C. This is with the fans on maximum, i ordered a Notepal U2 cooler so hopefully that will lower the average temps 5-8 degrees(thats how much the reviews say).

I just have one question, is it normal for this to have flex on the back of the LCD and on the keyboard?

Are the power bricks being shipped out nowadays 90W? I was one of the earliest buyers and got an obscenely large 120W AC adapter, but after shipping it along with the laptop to get the screen fixed, I received a 90W replacement (even though I didn't ask for one). Is 90W rated to be sufficient for the laptop (configuration below) power draw? Because I'd be happy with this size. Otherwise very unhappy if it throttled my system due to GT 555m not receiving enough power.
