I had the same problem as yours :)
I also have the z5500 sound system ande I didn't know how to plug them to make it work. The only way to do so is to use the coaxial input on your sound system with a 3.5mm spdif to rca adapter, then, you use a standart coaxial cable to do so. I agree with you with the fact that no documentations are included and it's really difficult to get information on that. Note that it isn't an optical output, as some spdif output are. I tested it.....

Ok I knew it was something like that, the W series are Coaxial SPDIF and the P series are Optical SPDIF.

    Thanks leblma :)

It still disappointing to me. I've always worked with optical, and thus have all the gear and 3.5mm converters for it. Now it looks like I'll have to go out and buy a new cable and converter just for this.. I miss my Audigy 2 ZS card from my last notebook

This sound interface on this laptop is really starting to get to me. After listening through the speakers for a few minutes, I got a bad case of listening fatigue. Plugged the headphone out port into my z5500s.. still got that same feeling. I really dont want to go out and buy a external soundcard for this. This laptop is basically a desktop replacement for me, so audio quality is pretty important.

Starbond, I've got the same problem as yours. I simply had disable the THXStudio pro and it had improve the sound quality. For me, the Sound Quality is excellent, but I'm really not audiophile.

Does the 555M drag a bit on a 1920x1080 resolution? Can anyone point me in the direction of a Sager/Clevo with a 555M @ 1600x900?

There is no Sager with 555m at 1600x900 screen. You would have to go with the NP5160 with 540m. Although if you contacted one of the Sager Resellers or a Clevo rebuilder they may be able to help you with getting a 1600x900 screen in the NP5165 (that has 555m).

For Sager from my personal experience, I'd recommend XoticPC (Justin@XoticPC username at NBR) or LPC-Digital (Larry@LPC-Digital username at NBR) or Malibal
For Clevo rebuilders mythlogic might be your best bet.

okay, thanks ill check that out. my gf has a gateway fx 1920x1200 with a 9800M GTS and it can barely play anything on high. So I'm gonna do my best to find a very powerful laptop with a 1600x900 resolution. I could do 1266x768, but it just feels so cramped.

EDIT: I could probably just play games in a lower resolution if need be. The only available 555M with a 1600x900 screen is the M14x and I do not want that thing. These Sager/Clevos look really classy which I like. Also, gf's FX only has a very old core 2 duo. Or I just splurge for a 560M.

you could still get the 5165 even with the 1080p screen, just lower the resolution of windows or whatever games you are playing

    I'm getting an odd problem.

Whenever I watch a video with subs or, there's a red fade as the subs disappear. This also happens with the Sager BIOS splash.

I thought the matte screen was amazing...

Yep that's exactly what I did. I ordered it from PowerNotebooks.com for $1134.00 and $28.00 shipping.

15.6” Full HD 16:9 Wide screen (1920x1080) LED-Backlit Display with 95% NTSC Color Gamut Matte Screen
30 Day "No Dead Pixel" Guarantee - Standard Screen (If I get a dead pixel, it would bug me to no end.)
    Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM (2.0~2.9GHz, 45W) w/6M L3 Cache - 4 Cores - 8 Threads
IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU (I hope it lowers temps a bit)
4GB (2 SODIMMS) DDR3/1333 Dual Channel Memory (Will upgrade this myself. Only if we can actually utilize 1600MHz.)
320GB SATA II 3Gb/s 7,200 RPM Hard Drive (16MB Cache Buffer)
Combo Dual Layer DVD +/-R/RW CD-R/RW Drive w/Softwares
Integrated 802.11 b/g/n wireless LAN + Bluetooth™ V3.0 Combo Card (Should I have upgraded the wireless card? Or is it best to do this on my own?)

Great customer service and the price was the same as XoticPC except the shipping which oddly enough was 3 times as much as PowerNotebooks.

As for the 128/192 business, it hardly matters, imo. I guess if someone cares enough, they can get the M14x, but be prepared for a louder fan and uneven lighting. I looked at one up at Fry's and the lighting of the keyboard faded as it went outward. Kinda cheapish. It's also thicker than the 5165. And of course way more expensive. It also looks like something out of a Michael Bay movie.

I just tried this and had no issues with the subtitles. My video was not a Blu-ray though, so maybe the source resolution matters.

Lowering the resolution to 1360x786 on a 15" screen will definitally give you the best gaming experience overall on the Gt 555m. Leave the 1080p gaming resolution for the 22" and 24" monitors. Atleast that's what I've experienced.

    It's not subtitles.

It's ALL text or images that appears and appears and disappears anywhere on the desktop.

I just checked the site I ordered my 5165 from again and it says the 555m will come with 2GB of GDDR3 memory. So does that mean they have recently changed to the full 192bit cards? Cause I thought the GDDR5 version was 128bit.

Anyone have any suggested colour settings with the matte screen? I got the ultra bright 95% color gamut matte screen and it's WAY too bright. My eyes hurt and I can't seem to balance colour with brightness.

Memory size has nothing to do with bus width. Still 128bit bus width.

I'd be mad... I just bought my laptop two weeks ago. I don't mind the extra bit of RAM though, I doubt I ever use even 1.5GB.

Color gamut has nothing to do with the brightness (as far as I know...). It's simply the accuracy that the screen can display all shades of color.

That's not what I meant. The GDDR5 models are supposed to be the 128 bus and GDDR3 are supposed to be 192. Or so the nVidia site says.

Nope there's four options, one of them is 128-bit DDR3:

If it bothers you a lot, you can RMA it. If you don't want to do that, do what I did and get a cloth like the ones you will use to clean glasses, then put your finger in the cloth and move your finger up and down while gradually making your way to the left or right side of your computer. Don't apply too much pressure when doing this. I don't recommend doing this but it's up to you. Here's a picture of my laptop with the same problem and the motion that I am describing.

    http://i.imgur.com/WJQ2s.png

I was doing some research and I thought it was related to this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image_persistence. A lot of people with a 95% gamut screen seem to be having this problem as seen in this post http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/593125-laptop-lcd-red-bleeding-black-backgrounds.html.

I had the same ghosting effect problem, the picture that I posted is already minimized and that red box is the window's ghost. The red ghosting effect lasts for 1-2 seconds for me and then disappears. Try it on a black background and you will see it more clearly :) .

    But it's always split-second.

Unless you photographed the moment of persistence, it never looks that bad.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get 2560 x 1440 on an external monitor such as the Dell U2711 (27" 2560 x 1440 native res) when attached to the NP 5165 ?

I thought the NP5165 only got like 3-3.5 hours on battery?

I don't understand the design decisions behind the NP5165. They include optimus which is great, but they use a gimped GPU, and only offer a 6-cell battery. You really won't save much on battery life if you use a DDR3 GPU opposed to GDDR5 because, well, it's switchable graphics.

I don't see why not. Using either HDMI or VGA should be fine.

Has anyone managed to get bumblebee working with their W150HRM?

I'm not sure if I'm doing it right, I've tried installing the nvidia drivers from the PPA, and then bumblebee using one of the configurations. It installs fine, but I can't run bumblebee-enablecard for some reason (the file is only 1 byte).

I can add that I'm really new to using linux, so I don't really know if I've missed something. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04.

    Yes.

Use the PPA and then run this command.

    Code:
    <code>wget https://github.com/Lekensteyn/bumblebee/raw/5b02bf2b51786622d42b26a6df9caeb02a90d352/install-files/optirun.ubuntu -O - | sudo tee /usr/bin/optirun > /dev/null</code></pre>
    Optirun should work after that.

MrMEE seems to have abandoned the project and Lek has taken over.

Would someone mind posting screenshots of the default advanced settings for UMA mode? I changed some settings, and want to go back to default, but didn't realize that it does not have a "Restore default settings for this plan" like the other three plans.

Already tried reinstalling certain drivers, like the sager hotkey drivers, intel mei drivers, intel video drivers, nvidia drivers hoping that one of those would reset the plan since that's not a default win 7 power plan, but that didn't help

So screenshots would be appreciated. thanks

    Hi guys,

So I just received my Sager and installed all the drivers. However, after I installed the webcam drivers, I can't change any properties like ColorEnable or other things. They're mostly greyed out although I can change brightness and contrast. Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

Right now, my driver information is: 6.1.7601.17514 from 6/21/2006.

Did you get yours from Xotic too? Here is the response I got about this issue:

Here is Sager’s reply to the ghosting issue:

“We have received some RMAs regarding the 95% panels having Ghosting issue, we have reviewed and reported the issue to Clevo, we have added additional QC Testing into our process to screen for ghosting issues panels.

Panels with ghosting issues will not shipped be to customers.”

EDIT: off subject, but does no one here have a nice video unboxing? I found one for the 5160, but it's just not the same, lol. I will have to wait another week and a half before I get my 5165 and it is TORTURE. I keep checking on here and youtube just to get my fix. It's pathetic, really.

Hello everyone! First things first… I’m computer illiterate, I can turn things on, play games, watch movies, use the internet, and download stuff. That pretty much sums up my mad computer skills. So all your talk of drivers, GPU, overclocking, and what not went right over my head at first. (I did my homework and started to understand what you were talking about… eventually.) However, that being said, you did all help me in my decision to finally go with the NP5165. If it’s good enough for a bunch of tech savvy guys I figured it should be good for a newbie like me. :D

Now I was thinking of upgrading and getting it with the following specs:
15.6" FHD 16:9 "Matte Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright LED Anti-Glare Screen w/ 95% NTSC Color Gamut (1920x1080) (New Sager Option)
    2nd Generation Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM, 2.0-2.8GHz, (32nm, 6MB L3 cache)
IC Diamond Thermal Compound - CPU + GPU (Cools better than all Compounds)
    nVidia GT 555M 2048MB PCI-Express GDDR3 DX11 with Optimus™ Technology
    8,192MB DDR3 1333MHz Dual Channel Memory (2 SODIMMS)- Special
    500GB 7200RPM (Serial-ATA II 300 - 16MB Cache)
6X Blu-Ray Read/8X DVDRW Super Multi Combo Drive – Special
    Intel® Ultimate-N 6300 - 802.11A/B/G/N Wireless LAN Module
    ~Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit Installed (64&32-Bit CD Included) w/ Drivers & Utilities CD's

But my question is… Is that a bit overkill for a guy like myself, who’s primary use will be school work with the occasional gaming, HD movies, a little photo shop, and music/video downloads? I’m sure during the summer I’ll use it more for gaming and multi-media. But I won’t be doing anything with high demand software like CAD. (After all I’m just a lowly history major). Would I be just as well off going with the i5 and 4GB of RAM? I look to purchase soon so any suggestions/advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    -Lux-

In terms of specs- you said you game, but what games exactly? I'd be hesitant to recommend anything less than the 555m graphics anyway for someone that plays modern games. If you don't do anything too demanding game-wise, you're right in that you could probably scale back to an i5 and maybe 4GB RAM (but 8GB is still recommended if you do any real gaming though). Otherwise the rest is personal preference (HDD size, Blu-ray, thermal paste, screen). That's all stuff you can do without if you decide you just don't want it :D

this is after running sc2 for 3-4 hours.

i chose to play on medium settings as this makes gameplay with the gt 555m extremely smooth and everything loads insanely fast. i increased some of the visual settings which the game said rely on the CPU because i have an i7.

I have ic diamond thermal on my gpu and cpu, and i am using a targus dual fan laptop cooling pad

just got the computer today and so far i love it

So I also have hopped on the wagon and purchased an NP5165. However, the AC adapter is obscenely large. I tried using my Ideapad Y460 adapter to power my laptop and it seemed to work. However, I noticed that the output for is 20V versus the 19V from the adpater that comes with the laptop. Anyone know where I can purchase a 3rd party adapter to match the output and/or whether 20V vs 19V is that big a problem?

The issue isn't the voltage, though differing voltages could mess up your laptop. The issue is the laptop's thirst for 120W or something like that.

I have a few problems with my machine:

I cannot get the webcam to work. When I first used the laptop, it was working fine, but it has since stopped working. When I try to use the webcam using the WebCam Installer 3.33 (software which came from the driver cd), I get the following error message:

But then when I press fn+f10, I turn off the webcam, and then of course it doesn't work. I've tried reinstalling the drivers and the problem persists.

My usb 3 ports are acting up. I've got everything stored on an external hard drive with a usb 3 connection, but whenever i connect it to the usb 3 ports, it sounds like the drive is constantly connecting and disconnecting (the duh duh sound repeats) and eventually i get a message telling me i cannot use the drive until it has been formatted. The drive works perfectly fine in the usb 2 ports (although i get the message saying it would be faster if connected to a usb 3 port), and in other laptops.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Edit: also, anyone know how to stop this message coming up whenever i press the vga button:
