Since the resellers have all but confirmed the pricing and availability of these machines, I've decided to create an owner's lounge.

    15.6" FHD standard screen
    Processor: 2630QM Standard
    GPU: NVIDIA GT555M w/ Optimus
    RAM: No info so far

Availability and Pricing: Early May, about $70 to $100 more expensive than the stock NP5160, so....about $800 - $850. The NP5175 is listed on XOTICPC as $949 stock.

    Who's excited about this? I know I am :D

Kobalt computers (UK) have priced this machine equal to that of the np5160 which it replaced. I'm in the lounge, awaiting delivery :D The spec I went for can be found in my sig.

Seeing as I am supposed to receive my np5160 this Thursday, I am trying to exchange it for the 5165! Hopefully, all will go well.

Hmm....depending on the reseller, they might charge you $65 to ship it back to them, and then tack on an additional $70 to upgrade to the newer model (and then of course shipping a purchased laptop is $25 from my reseller).

Is the new GPU really worth the potential extra $160?

Need to know more about GT 555M before jumping onto anything.

    For example,
How many cuda cores are there in this 2GB version?
Did Clevo/Sager upgrade heat sink for this card or is it same as the older/current card? If so, it will suck really bad.

Also, why are they increasing price? Shouldn't the upgrade be standard every few months at no extra cost? When GT 625M, 635M, and etc. comes out...sager will increase price again? They will charge $xx extra for 625m initially then they will upgrade it to 640m after few months and charge even higher...this is stupid..,IMO

    144 cores
    same heat sink
increase in price because the card is a higher tier card. newer cards of the same tier usually have the same price.

    same heat sink = fail

Price jump = fail (IMO) iPhone 3 cost(ed) 200 USD and iPhone 4 costs 200 USD...Apple doesn't charge extra for iPhone 4 when it comes out just cuz it is better than iPhone 3...NP5160 and GT 540m will be discontinued just like iPhone 3 (you might still find some for cheaper price)...come on sager/clevo don't get greedy...

I mentioned that newer cards of the same tier are usually priced equally. When they replaced the 425m with the 540m, the price didn't change, just like when apple replaced the phone3 with the phone4. The 540m with the 555m is a non-comparable exchange.

I am not trying to argue with YOU...sry if it sounds like that...

but, the point I am trying to make is that, 555M is "new" card...at least for Sager/Clevo. If they were giving option to customers to choose b/w 540m and 555m...then yeah sure, price should be higher for GT 555m. Take a look at NP8150/8170. They have 460M as default and if you want 485M or 6970M (similar arch), you have to pay extra. Sager/Clevo is not doing that. They are releasing an updated system with no options in GPU and discontinuing the old system. so why should they increase price for this model? why don't they just give option to NP5160 lappys? I am going to stop before sounding like a troll.

mrmysterious66: you are probably right. I like sager/clevo more than those other big companies. But, they should at least fix the heat issue that many people are talking about. I was looking forward to this laptop but after hearing some heating issues with 540m...I am not sure about spending ~1grand on something that I will regret.

Bah! Also kinda frustrated at the pricing. I was getting ready to put my money down on the 5160 when Paypal decided to do some stupid stuff with my money during a refund process. Next thing I know is the 5160s sell out and the 5165 is not out for pre-order. Now I'm stuck with a more expensive option when my pricing was already reaching my limit. I may have to reconsider new laptop options. This newer model better have fixed the heating issues...

You also forget that commodity prices have skyrocketed in the last several months. It's costing companies a lot more to purchase components and build them. The increase gets passed down the line until who ends up paying for it? Three guesses and the first two don't count.

Would have gone with this but....Dell XPS seems cheaper now... :(

Sry but I can't justify the extra $125+ for the "updated" system. This sux for those who plan to upgrade the screen to 95% NTSC Color Gamut screen because the upgrade costs the same as if you upgrade it from the 1600x900 screen found in NP5160... So basically, for these people, $125+ extra money is for GT 555M only...don't think it costs that much extra for 540m to 555m upgrade....

From what I can tell, the 125 is for the gpu and the screen. The additional screen upgrade costs the same as it did before because they still have to source the screen independently.

You have consequently been screwed over. Sorry D:

    Have been looking at this little powerhouse for a while;

From what I've seen the std battery will be 6c, will it be possible to choose a bigger one, maybe 8-9 cell? And what sort of battery life can we expect with the 6c vs a possible bigger bat. at 8-9c?

How is the FHD-matte screen(std one, not the expensive)? decent colors, brightness & viewing angles?

Oh, I almost forgot: What is the quality of the this line of laptops, compared to your avg. msi/asus/acer gaminglaptop @ a similar price point?

While it costs a heck of a lot more than the HP dv6t I had on order, I think a MYTHLOGIC system based on this chassis, with the 95% NTSC color gamut screen, is a smarter investment. I've seen photos and screenshots of that display, and it is absolutely stunning.

The only downside is having to use my work-loaned ThinkPad R61 for another month. Oh well.

What? Permanently? Or for long periods of time? What's the point of buying this computer then? Buy a laptop that has no discrete graphics card and has SB.

I'm sure there's an option in BIOS, but the Optimus technology will more or less decide when to use the iGPU and the dGPU, although you can configure to have specific programs use either of them.

i was looking at the specs and i just noticed that the 5160 comes with a 90W ac adapter while the 5165 comes with a 120W adapter. so i guess the adapter is going to be big and ugly, like the ones that come with the 8130. this sucks. it almost makes me wish i got the 5160 instead.

Here is a link to the owners manual, it can answer all your questions then some. Even though its for the 5160, it will pretty much be the same for the 5165.

    Software Upgrade

Also cross posting is frowned on by the mods.

Thanks for the manual, didn't think to do that.

Jugding by the manual, THIS LAPTOP CANNOT TURN OFF NVIDIA CARD THROUGH BIOS.

However, i did the manual did show a GPU/VGA button that is described as UMA mode/Optimus Mode. Howver the manual FAILS to inform whether this button is software powered or actually turns off GPU at the hardware level (regardles if windows is booted)

Being a Linux user, its frustrating that these features are so poorly documented. Can anyone confirm if this button actually switches at the hardware level?

    thank you

I think I'm going to buy this laptop. The 555m seems like a powerful card that will be able to keep up for a while. The laptop I want has the 2gb version which seems beefy.

How do you guys find the battery life?

Just remember that this card differs from the one found in Dell computers, 128bus vs 192 so it's kinda crippled.

What card is the 555m of sager/clevo comparable to?

True, the $130+ price increase just for a graphics upgrade (which may not be that significant due to the 128, not 192-bit bus) may make this laptop less appealing in value compared to the np 5160, but the truth is, there are zero laptops as of now that can claim to have a15.6 inch screen, FHD, and the best Optimus setup available under $1k and not have to look like a gamer rig (along with its bulky weight).

Where did you guys see the 128-bit bus???
It's the GDDR5 version that has a 128-bit bus, the NP5165 has the DDR3 version, which *should* have a 192-bit bus...
Look at the specs on the nvidia website : http://www.nvidia.com/object/product-geforce-gt-555m-us.html
Now Clevo might've crippled it, but I haven't seen any info about that anywhere, and it would be surprising...

According to some benchmarks on notebookcheck, the gt555m should be 30-40% faster than the gt540m, which is more than worth the 90-100$ added price imo.
Oh and it should also use about the same power (don't quote me on that, though, I didn't find any reliable source), so the heat issues will still be there, but not worse.

I'll remain a believer in NVIDIA's specs sheet until I have a look my very own SAGER NP5165. Really though, a 128-bit memory bus is not the end of the world.
