Good read can be found here:

    Benchmarkreviews.com tested 80 thermal pastes

The article describes the different substances. Innovative Cooling Seven Carat Diamond is Carbon/Aluminum Oxide with High / Thick viscosity. Arctic Silver 5 is Polysynthetic Silver with Low / Thin viscosity. In the above test, IC scored an A-, while AS scored an A+.

I have seen that review and while its very comprehensive I sure would like to see it updated to include MX3 and MX4 to see how they compare to the current top of the pack. Also I have seen other reviews that show the opposite results where AS5 is behind the IC in temps, so really in top tiered TIM's there is not a whole lot of difference, maybe 1 or 2 degrees C. But compared to standard white monkey spit you are probably getting about a 5 degree C improvement.

EDIT: I sure would like to see what kind of temps people are getting or will be getting with a 2520M installed.

There's a hypothesis on the Dell XPS15 L502x thread that the high temperatures are a result of TurboBoost 2.0, i.e. that this is how they are designed to operate.

I wonder if some of our resellers who have Intel contacts could confirm.

I know little about semiconductor reliability, but I do know that most degradation mechanisms are thermally dependent w/ exponential dependence on temperature. Even so, the difference between 80C and 90C (or more relevantly, 353 K and 363 K) is small.

does anyone know when they start shipping this notebook if i place an order today? i read end of march on some vendor web sites. xoticpc shows it as pre-order. which probably means it'll take months to ship. :(

i can't tell with the other vendors like pro-star, sager, power notebooks, etc. so i assumed they're in the same boat as xoticpc. :)

New orders we are quoting people approximately 8-14 business days. Feel free to PM or email me if I can help answer any questions. Good news is that at this point we don't expect anybody to be waiting a month. :)

Yeah I'm also interested to know what the temps are with an i5-2520M installed.

Anyone know roughly what the difference is in temps and also battery life?

Interesting thread, though its hypothesis doesn't quite explain why other 15" laptops are doing fine with the Sandy Bridge thermals (ie: Sager 8130/8150). There is still a debate as to what is acceptable temps for system longevity, but I think the answer to why these systems run higher than last years systems is probably a combination of how Turboboost works and last years inadequate cooling system (ie: VERY small surface for the heat sinks and only one fan for both the CPU and GPU)

I am seeing the following in the system event log
"The speed of processor 7 in group 0 is being limited by system firmware. The processor has been in this reduced performance state for 0 seconds since the last report"

    Any Idea ?

I believe undervolting is out of question, but would you think that underclocking the GPU or CPU would be effective to decrease those temperatures? (without loosing to much performance on real world activities)

Can someone explain to me the difference between the i5 and i7 processors available? From what I can tell, the i5 makes the battery last longer and has lower temps (longer laptop life), but the i7 is more "powerful"...?

Also, what's the difference between the different wireless cards offered at xotic? What makes the Intel Ultimate more...ultimate?

Is Intel VT(virtualization) supported in the BIOS? I am waiting patiently for one of these from Xotic but it will be bust if it doesn't support that. Thanks.

I understand that...however I'm unsure if the i7 would be worth the extra $30. I would think so with the i7 being just an overall more powerful processor...however it might be better to stick with the i5 if the i7 is significantly hotter or consumes much more battery.
Does anyone have info on how the i5s and i7s compare on battery life, temp, and longevity?

ok fyi the powerdvd 8 software that came with the system for my blu-ray drive is crap. there are no updates that i can seem to pull down on the website or via cyberlink's instructions, and did not play newer titles like star trek. i ended up buying powerdvd 10 and grabbing the latest version, which fixed all my problems. i was worried this didn't even work at first (the digital store gave me an old version which still had the same issues, and i only found the update via their website)

the keyboard isn't bad. layout may take some time to get used to, but i'm already adjusted (coming from a HP 8710w workstation)

I think it's fine. I don't like the arrow key arrangement, but it's not a deal breaker. The Caps Lock and Num Lock indicator lights being on the front of the chasis are a bit of a pain.

I don't know why reviews complain about it not feeling sturdy; it's sturdier than any non-chicklet style notebook keyboard I've used...

I don't know how the forum works, but isn't it time to open a "Impressions/Review/Thoughs on the Sager NP5160 (Clevo W150HNQ)" kind of thread?

Not really sure we need one, this forum has lower traffic and reply counts compared to the other major forums. This having an impressions/thoughts forum really started on the release of these new Sager models. I think they are good and bad.

This would tend to dilute the information into two threads instead of one, so now if you come in and want to get up to speed you would need to read through both. On the other hand if we had a larger Mod presence keeping things on topic a new thread would be more informative. (And since we don't have that maybe it's best not to at this time).

Just my thoughts on the subject.

    yeah, you may be right.

I would like to have a place to find owners spontaneous opinions, but mostly it will become discussion like we have here (which also is good, of course). I've seen lots of topics diverging from its original idea over this forum.

I'm still in p1 (xotic) and I put mine in Mar 3. As my current laptop is struggling to open a chat window as I type this, I hope it moves into p2 soon :).

I went with a few upgrades, with the screen (95% matte) adding some delay, but I'll post again when I get an update.

Well if it does go over 95C, you'll save a lot of money by buying a decent notebook cooler instead of buying a brand new laptop. I doubt that Sager machines will let the temps get that high, they have amazing cooling.

Me too, I doubt that they would release it in such conditions. Actually I just got to know Clevo machines a month back, at the time I started looking around for my new notebook, but I've seen that they have a "good cooling" fame. But I need numbers to believe heheheh

Speaking of notebook coolers... do they really work?
How much improvement in cooling could we expect from them?
I actually have one ( like this). I like it because it also has a pair of loud-and-bass speakers that I use together with my laptops hornets, but I don't see much improvement on cooling. I think its a problem of alignment from my actual notebook air inlet (at the corner) and the cooling base (centered).

I can't tell if this one I got is a good one, I just bought it someday. How better cooling would you expect by using a good cooling base on the Sager NP5160?
I was hoping to use the same I've got, since NP5160s speakers are little horns as well :p

So I should get a $60-100 cooler because it's insufficient, instead of a $200 upgrade to a computer that actually runs cool? >_>

Still waiting on more testing. Here's hoping it was just an oddity.

Lol, good point. Whatever works for you, they're both excellent sytems with two completely different purposes.

5160 for light gaming and good battery life, meant to be carried around.

8130 for heavy gaming and almost no battery life, meant to be a desktop replacement.

The 8130 has about 3 hours of battery life and it's fine to carry around anywhere. I used to carry around a G73JW-3DE everywhere :p

The 5160 has about 2 hours more than the 8130 for battery life.

The 8170 is more of a desktop replacement because it's 17" and the 8130/5160 are both 15.6" (15" laptops aren't really considered desktop replacements as much as 17"+ are).

I would consider the 8150/70 as "heavy gaming" because they can both have the 485m, meanwhile the 8130 cannot (however it's said that it can handle the 6970 if you buy a more powerful power adapter, which is costly, in the future - this has been untested).

I thought the 8130 and 8150's cooling systems were identical. Heck for that matter, i think their shells are completely identical its just that Clevo puts some rubberized stuff on the 8150.

Alright, I suspected It wasn't a good cooler. If I manage to get my laptop correctly aligned it makes it a bit cooler. Haven't tested sufficiently.
But I like its ergonomics and It does act like a subwoofer. I like it. :)

But then If I get a nice cooler, how much of an improvement it could get?
(if you may know of a good read on it, I've never seen one)

Does anyone have any additional details on build quality? Some photos would be awesome.

I'd love to hear some answers to questions like these:
    • What material is it made of?
    • What kind of texture or finish does it have?
    • How flimsy does the hinge feel?
    • How does it feel to type?
    • What does the touchpad and it's buttons feel like?
    • How rigid is the frame?
    • How does the lid latch, and how does it feel to open and close it?
    • Does it have a lot of crevices (especially around the touchpad) that debris can get into?
