Would be good to have the title of the thread as Clevo P950ER Owners Lounge, as it's not only people who purchase the Eurocom version who will post here and it helps people see which chassis is being discussed rather than just one of the resellers (which would be better posted in the Reseller Feedback section) ;-)

    The SteamVR performance test.

Due to Optimus, the test shows the GPU as the integrated U630 instead of the proper GTX 1070 Max-Q.

こんいちは @Dennismungai hey read your feedback here & on other threads regarding the Q6 - it's too bad the unit didn't exactly work out, but good to hear you eventually found a solid alternative.

Question: if you had a friend who was absolutely set on buying a Q6 today, in light of your issues with cooling, would you suggest perhaps the i5 instead of i7? That move would shave off $200 the price tag; as recommended in this review.

Also on the topic of configuration, I notice Eurocom shipping this now with minimum 180W adapter, not the 150W that you received - so despite the bulkier power brick, subsequent customers should get better GPU perf. In fact, their configurator currently indicates GTX 1070 (N17E-G2) specifically "100W", which seems to imply no hard cap of 80W that was on yours (but I could be wrong or misinterpreting this). Also noticed you received a BIOS update so wondering if that helped squeeze out any more from it.

All things considered I am hopeful, at the right price, this unit is still a viable daily driver for gaming/coding/digital art. Looking forward to your input!

Btw, huge props for making the comprehensive Linux/Ubuntu gists.

Go with the i5. For gaming, the i5 is more than adequate. Gaming laptops junky also recommends the i5, and I trust that guy's transparency on reviews more than my morning coffee.

It fixed the show stopping bugs I encountered, particularly on Linux. Loading the system up on battery would result in a shutdown.

Eurocom is lying on the specs there. That is an 80W GPU. If someone else here with such a system can prove otherwise, that would be most welcomed.

It really is. The only thermal paste that brought this machine under control was ICD. Get it and apply it. I also had excellent results with Phoyba Nanogrease Extreme.
For productivity tasks, I found it more than adequate. Indeed, I consider the screen on the Asus GM501GS-XS74 to be a downgrade in that regard.

Concerning Linux related matters: If you run into issues, do reach out. I, among others, may be able to assist where we are able.

Great input, thanks!! If I get the system, will definitely go i5 and that 144hz panel. Will share benchmarks of course.

AC adapter/power cord question. Need to work in both NA and Japan - is it just a matter of requesting an extra power cord for 'Europe' ? That will be a 2 prong end that fits into Japanese outlets, right ?

You're set. In Japan, the connector used for wall sockets is the North American plug.

    Extra details:

In Japan, the output voltage is set to 100V, unlike NA's 120V.
The frequency of electric current is 50 Hertz in Eastern Japan and 60 Hertz in Western Japan. However, this is not of any consequence to you.

    Looking forward.

An extra tip: If you need LTE, do NOT purchase the option offered by Eurocom in the configurator. It's trash. Rather, go out of your way and look for the Qualcomm Snapdragon X5. It's often sold as a HP-branded 4120 LTE module. See this example listing: https://www.amazon.com/LT4120-Snapdragon-T77W595-796928-001-150Mbps/dp/B078MH2F2S

The system is already pre-wired for that module, which occupies the M.2 3042 slot on the motherboard.
To get it working on Linux, you will need the appropriate udev rule, which you can fetch from here: https://github.com/borovsky/x5-snapdragon-linux

The same is also mentioned in the Linux gists for the Q6.

Are you sure about connector, it seems like every power outlet in North America are 3 prong and the exact opposite is true in Japan (everything 2 prong). On my previous laptop, needed to always bring along a 'cheater plug' converting from 3 prong to 2 prong.

I just assumed the Q6 will ship with a 3 pronger, hence the thinking to ask for the 'Europe' cable version as well which I assume is 2 prong and thus can fit into any outlet in Japan.

Thanks for the extra tip regarding LTE. Typically just use Wifi tethering from a phoneplan or Travel/data SIM from Bic Camera anyway.

You may need to bring that with you. By default, Eurocom will ship the three plug adapter.

    Then you're sorted here.

Got my Q6! Eurocom assured me the issues with i7 cooling are solved - so I ended up going with it. Their prompt service and thanks to @Dennismungai 's Ubuntu guide am now up & running smoothly. In fact, just forked your guide and added a couple links of my own (though probably better to have just commented on your original now; no sense having two separate versions just learned that you can't PR gists)

Anyway, a new issue today suddenly HDMI output stopped working. Not sure exactly what triggered this, as I had a secondary display working fine on day #1 but a few days out of the office, am back & something has caused it to no longer detect external display (subsequently tried 2 different displays and different cables too with no luck). Any idea of what could cause that?

    Currently on NVIDIA 396.54

Do you dual boot, say Windows + Linux? That way, you can drill it down to a hardware issue (if neither Windows nor Linux can drive the HDMI out) or a software issue on Linux only (if only Linux fails to drive the HDMI output).

Also, show me the output of:

Hmm, could you connect that HDMI output and then see if xrandr output changes?
Also, see if dmesg outputs any information related to a new display being plugged in by running:

    journalctl -xf

    Then plug in the monitor.

but Ubuntu > Settings > Displays still only shows one and NVIDIA settings panel again just one display detected.
The secondary monitor itself changes too; the OCD goes from 'Unplugged' to 'No Signal Detected' when inserting to that HDMI port .

I'm now curious on the monitor(s) you're using.

Could you try this workaround: Plug in the HDMI cable to the laptop first. Then, three seconds later, plug in the other end to the monitor, while its' on and set to "HDMI Input".

Could you upgrade to the current stable R410?

It should be available from the Proprietary GPU drivers PPA.

The external monitor I attempting to connect is an old BenQ fp241w via HDMI to DVI adapter. Again, this display connected fine to my Eurocom Q6 within days of getting it setup (as per steps in your guide).

But some later configuration or update or application must have caused something to go wonky; given that this was fresh OS install there had been lot's of new apps and things I was installing.

Anyway, I tried to do NVIDIA 410 but interestingly cannot get that driver or any other driver other than 396 to work. After installing other drivers (tried both using the "Additional Drivers" UI as well as doing apt-get purge nvidia* then apt-get install nvidia-410) drivers appear to install OK and after reboot NVIDIA control panel works fine and even reports ie 410 installed but when you try to launch any 3D application it fails.

Ex Blender output when trying to launch:

    Code:
    flatpak run org.blender.Blender
libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast

If I use 396 Blender or any 3D application or game works fine and performs well (but still no recognizing of 2nd display).

    Use this instead:
    sudo apt-get install nvidia-kernel-source-410 nvidia-driver-410

I have seen Ubuntu 18.04LTS fail to fetch the first package (nvidia-kernel-source) as a dependency more than once. It could be a bug.

Thanks, tried sudo apt-get install nvidia-kernel-source-410 nvidia-driver-410 but resulted in same 'phantom install' where it appears to install, says it's installed, but fails to launch any 3D app.

    CUDA not installed.

At this point, tempting to re-install Ubuntu from scratch following your guide again but instead of 396 will start with 410 from the get go (though not necessary trying this soon since I'm currently using the system as daily driver for work); would be one way to also check if HDMI works again on fresh install.

Meant to post this a while ago, anyway I was able to get HDMI working by switching from GDK to LightDM

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install lightdm
