Does anyone know which panel manufacturer and model makes the 95% gamut version for this laptop? What are your experiences with the same panel?

I'm glad to hear you're liking yours! Makes me feel even more confident in my decision to buy it. I'm just waiting on it from Mythlogic -- for anyone considering paying by check to save 3%, I wouldn't do it again, I'd use a credit card. I sent the check on August 2nd and it still hasn't cleared. Maybe I just need to learn to be more patient though :p I WOULD go with Mythlogic though, because they seem to be an awesome company.

The 95% gamut display is the AUO B156HW01 V.4, it is made by AU Optronics. They make really nice and high quality screens. There are a lot of reviews and comparisons on this forum about that screen. just do a few seaches.

    Two questions (related).

    1. My CPU temp is running in the mid 50s at idle -- this seems a bit warm to me, but I was not sure. This is w/o the Nvidia GPU (I got a custom model that does not include the part according to the manufacturer) and the core i7-3720. Is this normal or running hot?

    2. Is there an upgrade for the CPU heatsink available?

    Thanks

Notebook chips are rated for higher temperatures then desktop ones. You could drop them a little with decent TIM but it's nothing to worry about. Clevo has of course tested the laptop to make sure it doesn't go over safe temperatures and as you can't overclock it's not an issue.

No, if you look at the W110ER threads there are several mods.

    You have the W25AEU btw.

Thanks... I double checked the sticker on the bottom and it is actually a W25AES. I will look at the mods in the other thread.

Very strange as the 630m is soldered to the mobo so a W25AES without that part is using a different board and because of that many other parts as well.

Here is a picture of the board -- perhaps they have just disabled the Nvidia part?

Will not embed it in here, because it is a huge image.

Wow, there is something seriously weird about your board. The RAM chips for the GPU is there, and the head-sink part (the part near the outlet) of the GPU is there, don't know what is beneath it. Also, it seems they completely removed the fan (you can see the part where the fan should have been). Which is crazy.

The fan is attached to the bottom plate not the mobo... it looks like a completely normal AES board in every respect. Maybe there was a small batch where through some fault the gpu is permanently off? Very odd indeed.

I would be more inclined to think they used a special bios to disable the board... sad, though, because it would have been better to have a bios that allowed you to choose which card you wanted.

Well then, try and get the normal bios. I have a feeling the GPU is generating heat, even though it is disabled. That is why your CPU heat is so high on idle.

I agree with you... does the normal bios allow you to choose Optimus, Nvidia or Intel?

With the Nvidia card not disabled in Linux I was getting 60s with an i3... also Wingnut's i7 temps match your own. The stock BIOS doesn't provide those options as there is no hardware mux. It'd be highly unlikely that the vendor would load an alternate BIOS that would devalue the machine anyway .

Were the 60s temps when idle?

The vendor I purchased from is System76.com -- It is the Gazelle model.

    Yes.

Oof, never ever ever buy from them. At least $100 more expensive then a normal W25AES with a glossy display and seemingly no dgpu. Especially when it takes all of ten minutes to install Ubuntu yourself. Have you run lspci | grep NVIDIA?

Yes, lspci shows no Nvidia part.

    I got mine for $1352

When I priced that out at Sager the difference was $8. (Sager came out at $1344) After I ordered I found Xnotic which does sell it for less currently ($1264).

I got the 95% gamut matte screen with mine. The reason I chose the Sys76 is it made no claim of the nvidia part (which I do not want due to issues with Optimus).

Ya the Nvidia card is pretty much deadweight. Still NS2 final might force me to install Windows on a second drive and take advantage of it.

What bothers me about 76 is the absolute lack of openness as to their hardware sources. Very hypocritical for a Linux vendor. Also that $100 premium so you don't have to apt-get install bumblebee.

In hindsight I should have gotten a W25AEU instead without a screen and bought one from a panel warehouse. Would have saved more than $200. The screen upgrade prices from resellers are grossly inflated. Live and learn

Paying a premium to get it with Ubuntu is a rip off. And disabling the GPU for an extra premium on top of that is an even bigger rip off. If I were you, I would try and return it. You can get the W25AEU that is lighter, thinner and cheaper, because it doesn't have a GPU. For me that will be dual booting into windows, I need a dGPU to play some games. But if you don't want it, then they clearly ripped you off, even with the price deductions.

If Nvidia Optimus is functioning properly, the GPU will be 100% powered down during normal operation, at least on Windows. I'm not sure how well that works on Linux, though...

hastur, can you tell me what the matte screen brand and model is? HWInfo should provide this for you. It'd be much appreciated!

    Thanks.

Mine's a LG LP156WF1(TL)(B2), I ordered it after the fact from Mythlogic and referred to it as the P150EM matte so there's a small chance (makes no sense though!) it's not the default.

I searched online for W25AEU but couldn't find any sites selling it. Could you mention some sites? I don't need a dGPU and want to save money on that. As I mentioned elsewhere System76 sells W25AES without dGPU but they are expensive.

Right, it's the Sager NP2252. Might see if Larry at LPC Digital or one of the others open to strange orders'll send you it without a screen. Mind there are no reviews of the thing around so you're taking a risk. If you're looking for a Linux laptop on the cheap a used Lenovo from the NBR marketplace might be a good bet. The amount of configurations the newer kernels support is quite impressive and a lot of Linux enthusiasts use ThinkPads.

Will a 2.5" 9.5mm ssd ( Intel 520 ) fit in the main hard drive bay of NP3265 or do I need a spacer or bracket to convert it to 3.5"? Thanks.
