Hi all o/
To give an idea about the performance of couple 4700HQ/GTX765M in 1080p : http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Asus-G750JW-Notebook.96316.0.html

Ordered one from xoticpc, should be shipped by the end of the month they say.

I went with SLI mSATA just because "I could". I may later revert to only a single 500GB mSATA for weight and power reasons, but for now, it will be fun to tinker and tell people it has three drives and two in RAID 0. -
Wonder what Mythologic is using as their panel on this thing. I am going to shoot them an E-mail.
-
Here's what mythlogic said about the auo panel 2 pages back:
-
Yeah I just sent them an email and they said the ones that are being shipped to them are using the AUO panel as well. I wish that there was somebody who offered it with the Chemei panel.

i want this laptop but it bring up lots if concerns and questions.
i need some help..
so i am thinking to buy it from xoticpc..
1) how much difference will it make if I upgrade to the copper cooling system? and add the diamond thermal paste?
will it gain weight by a lot?
2) will i be able to notice the difference between a calibrated monitor? will this improve the monitors life expectancy?
3) upgrading to the i7-4800mq.. how much will it effect on the power? will it overheat the system? would the extra copper upgrade be beneficial in this situation?
someone please help me answer these questions. this might be the first laptop...

It is the AUO panel almost for sure since they are saying it is an AHVA panel which is a trademark owned by AUO. Their panels seem pretty decent from what I have heard, and have relatively low input lag which is actually a bit more important than response time while gaming.

I called HIDevolution today and they already have the W230ST in stock. Anyone have any experience with them? Thanks.

Am looking forward to this as it looks like one very nice laptop with good things going for it. -
Did XoticPC mention yet why their listing doesn't include an option for the 4702MQ? LightningPL suggested that it helps improve the thermals and I suspect he's right. I'm waiting for somebody to make that offer....
-
-
Sager would have to offer the CPU since XoticPC and other resellers don't touch the laptop before it comes to you. On the other hand XoticPC and other resellers have offered services where they will do non-standard upgrades where the laptop ships to the reseller and they do the upgrade there. It sounds like it may be a very popular option, so likely to see it in the near future.
To be honest, they should make a version with a 4702MQ, 1600x900 screen, and GT 750m and sell it for $850 and it'd probably sell like hotcakes. -
If I wanted to step (way!) down to a 750m, the market is flooded with choices. This one is so interesting because it breaks into the mid-high tier but remains ultra-portable...

Has anybody tried the Windows 8.1 Preview on one of these? I hear some folks over in the MSI GE60 (2013) thread complaining that the stock NVidia drivers aren't working, and the manufacturer hasn't put out anything 8.1-compatible yet.
(It occurred to me: I haven't used Win8 before, and I could use the 8.1 Preview installer as a sort of "free demo" of Win8 -- if it works...) -
-
One last thing: could somebody who's gotten hands-on time talk a bit about the audio quality? I've been in more than one Clevo owner's thread that says the speakers are terrible, so I'm hoping this one bucks the trend.
(Sorry to keep asking questions, but I'm leaning increasingly towards buying one of these and I just want to cover my bases!) -
(1) Cost, likely to be more expensive, probably $1300-$1400
(2) Availability - history of Gigabyte laptops in N.A. has been scarce
(3) Embedded CPU (4700HQ, but has Iris Pro IGP)
(4) Battery life 48WHr vs 62WHr
(5) BGN only, no AC
(6) One mSATA only, both have full 2.5" SATA
(7) 765m is 200MHz faster clock speed at stock (that's 30% faster)
(8) Heat and noise and throttling. Still TBD, but in a thin chassis, usually they run hot. -
Add me to the club, I placed my order yesterday. I was going to wait till the 900P option was available but after reading what LightningPL said I ordered one. ( in case anyone miss it, he saw not distortion in games at 900P over 1080P) This is what I ordered;
CPU = 4800
MEM = 16 gigs
Wireless = Intel 7260
HD= Seagate Hybrid 750
MSATA 1 = Crucial or Plextor 128 GB for Windows 8
MSATA 2 = Crucial or Plextor 128 GB For Manjaro Linux
2 year WArranty
I let Sager do the paste
Now I got to do some reading on the Intel 7260 in Linux and see how well it holds up. Still debating which Msata drives to get. -
Still waiting until I know for sure what panel they are using to pre-order. I might just buy a Chemei some time and replace the AUO if that is how it ends up.

BGN and AC are the Wi-Fi specs. Granted 802.11b/g/n are a mature technology where AC spec is not fully developed, and it's fairly new. But just the fact that I can get 4-5 times the performance of N makes it a very solid selling point.
Thinner chassis usually means hotter and noisier because there's less room for the air to flow, fans and heatsinks can't be as big to dissipate the heat efficiently, and loud because they have to use thinner fans moving faster to move a lot of hot air. And the W230ST is 1.25in thick -
-
"Right - we don't generally carry devices that are geared toward gaming, but with the line getting blurrier there it's likely that we'll list at least the 14" model. 15 is pushing it for us, but who knows..." -
That 14" Callisto doesn't have a dedicated GPU so gaming performance will suffer greatly. However you should still be able to play games at 720p on medium settings no problem. Otherwise it is a nice laptop. But it also costs more than the W230ST and it only saves 0.4" thickness and 0.3lbs weight. As far as heat and noise, it should be ok because it's only cooling the CPU not two components.
-
Really looking forward to seeing battery life numbers. If it can manage 5+ hours under non-gaming use, I might just make it my next notebook. I was looking at the Y410p before, but the screen is a real disappointment (though the 750m is adequate since I game on a desktop).
-
wingnut, when do you receive your w230st?
i've scoured google for a comprehensive review, and i don't think we'll get one until you're able to fiddle.
my heart is telling me that this is a fantastic notebook, but a laptop is never an insignificant investment, so i'm trying to remain patient. -
I think this thing is going to have major throttling issues.. not because of the heat but because of the power adapter
-
What about the power adapter? I haven't been able to see any pictures of it actually for the W230ST. I wonder if it's huge or small.
-
-
-
The small one.
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
-
Wait, why's it going to have throttling issues cuz of the adapter? Is the power output not gonna be enough or something? Doesn't make any sense...
-
Couple of questions. If I intend on using my hard drives for only OS, various video editing apps, and temporary video files which are deleted once complete and transferred to an ext drive, should I just stick with two 128gb sata drives in raid0 for faster r/w during editing? Or would having one sata and one primary ssd drive be just as good of an option? All files I have are saved on an ext once I'm done with them.
Another question I have is should I wait until the AC card option becomes available before ordering this top? I've looked at HID and Mythlogic. HID doesn't offer it and Myth does but I'm hesitant to order Myth because the site doesn't specify what brand of upgrades I'm paying for such as the RAM whereas HID does. Haven't looked at Xotic yet or any others but is waiting for the AC option really worth it? Kind of in desperate need of an upgrade here lol. Thanks for any help! -
Crucial M500 480GB 400MB/sec write $360
Crucial M500 240GB 250MB/sec write $200
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB/512GB both are 450MB/sec write $235/$467
or go with RAID 0 mSATA, it offers best bang for the buck.
2x Plextor M5M 128GB 625MB/sec write 2x$100 = $200
Regarding wireless AC, it is already available as an option. -
I'm should get my W110ER by Tuesday or Wednesday at latest. I will be sure to address the most pressing concerns right away like:
- heat/thermal with 4800MQ
- battery life
- fan noise
- RAID 0 performance
- Intel 7260 Wi-Fi performance
- LCD type/brand details
- surface temperatures
-
-
-
Awesome !
Hope to hear more from you soon.
