Well I pulled the trigger on it. I got it sans hard drive and am planning on putting in a 500 gb BX100 when it comes. Not bad for under $1000 combined.

It is possible to flash bios, but I read correctly, only signed bioses... that means, no autorized modifications unless somebody finds a way to bypass the encryption.

I'm so glad that I bought this laptop now, I can do everything with it thanks to Prema and my unlocked 860m, lol :D (if broadwell supports the H87M chipset, then I will swap my already very good 4710MQ with a better processor too!)

We can flash whatever we want (at least for now with our modded nvflash versions). It's just there simply isn't an old stock version with oc still enabled like with the current GPUs...

So what you mean is that for OC at all, even for less than +135 MHz, a VBIOS mod is required?

Wow so they changed it so the mod does not work either? Damn that's a PITA.

    Random newbie question...

I noticed this laptop had bluetooth built into it, so I went ahead and bought a fancy pair of Bose bluetooth headphones... ( http://www.bose.ca/controller?url=/..._headphones/soundlink_oe_headphones/index.jsp). I tried to pair it with my laptop but it doesn't seem to be working. It works just fine with my Galaxy S5... Then I started reading that not all bluetooth devices are the same and can't all pair with everything else... Is bluetooth audio not supported by my laptop?

Should work perfectly fine. Type in Windows key and S together, it'll open the search bar. Type in PC Settings and you'll see an app with a white gear in a purple square, open it. There, in Devices, you should see a Bluetooth menu item. Open that and you should be able to pair.

See I thought that as well. My laptop can detect it, it can even pair and say its connected. But the headphones don't actually work, and the status symbol on the headphones indicate it is still trying to connect.

Six days later, Xotic has yet to charge my card (waited until yesterday to say they couldn't without address confirmation...isn't it common these days to have a different shipping and billing address?) and seems to have a 24 hour turnaround on any communication I have with them. I'm curious why so many other websites (Newegg, Amazon, etc...) have modern payment systems where I don't need to specifically call my bank and authorize a purchase. Is there any chance Xotic would upgrade to Square Checkout, Google Checkout, Visa Checkout or any of the other modern equivalents in the future? I appreciate that they're protecting me by making sure the purchase is authorized, but maybe if they used Google Checkout, Google would cover the liability (I know they do for customers, I don't know about businesses). This is all very frustrating, I just want my new computer!

A little more complicated than just offering those services while still offering all the customization we do as there is a great deal of stuff that needs checked manually for compatibility as far as options chosen. Using those automated processes would significantly impact processing time still as we'd need to do a lot of order changes after the fact which would delay the production even more. If you can PM your order number I can try to look into the details on it as to why it has taken so long. One week to be told your address didn't verify is a long time and is typically within 24 hours you hear that.

Spoke with Bose and Sager and figured out what is wrong. With sager I updated the bluetooth drivers to the newest version to 1.3.816.3. Still didn't work spoke with Bose and they said the error is being caused back a lack of A2DP support. Does anyone have a generic driver for this or have a solution?

I have a Realtek RTL8723BE Wireless which is the stock card that comes with my laptop.

It seems a little outrageous to have to buy a new wireless card when whats missing is a driver....

    Heya guys

Stumbled onto this seemingly great looking laptop  just in time as I was about to buy either a lenovo y40 or yoga 2 pro for practically the same price!

Am I right to assume that the Scan UK 13.3" laptop is their rebrand of the NP7338?

Whats the battery like with the i7 quad core or the i5 dual core? 1080p Screen decent? Battery life?

Been hard to source info as I'm related to my phone and need to head to the uni library to use a computer.

    Thanks guys!

Hi people, i read most of this thread and everything seems to be ok so im going to order w230ss and for this price it awesome. Now i have one question on what i didnt found answer yet. Considering that the price is the same what display is better, WQHD or FHD? Im not suffering on running games and all in WQHD because on this small screen i prefer FHD but is it stupid to buy WQHD and run it in FHD, is there a problem in scaling? Im asking coz i think WQHD is future proof and since it doesnt cost extra what is ur opinion?

It's a tricky choice, I'd go with 1440p but 1080p won't be out of date for some time and most regular content is aimed at that. 4k content scales to it to.

    It is, sort of.

Both the W230SS's FHD and WQHD are the top panels in their sort and the difference amongst these two is negligible (the QHD is mediocre ... at best). However, one significant difference is that the FHD comes with a 30-pin/2-lane cable whereas the WQHD's is 40-pin/4-lane. This doesn't matter yet ... but when (at last) high-gamut eDP panels become available for laptops it'll require a 4-lane. There's no guarantee it'll be compatible, of course, since they may come with 50-pin connectors, but chances are best with the WQHD cable. The QHD's cable might actually turn out to be an even better option ( if, indeed, it has a higher wire-count), but that leave you with a so-so screen for the interim and the cable's shorter.

Downscaling the WQHD's not an issue; my 1440p does 1080p spot-on and it's nice to have a 1:1 match when outputting to a 1440p-ish projector. If, at one time, you want to revert to 1080p (wqhd breaks and fhd is cheaper, for instance) than there's always a 40-pin>30-pin adapter to fall back on (example).

Thanks for a reply, that helped me a lot in my decision. One last think i want to ask is would u recommend clevo over acer aspire v 15 nitro or asus rog g551jm, they all have same specs, same ram, same gpu and same cpu and price here in europe is the same.

Aren't those 15.6"? Anyway, both feature a soldered cpu, the W230SS is socketed. Also, far more limited storage options; the Clevo has 2x mSATA + 1x 2.5" (4TB total, RAID possible), the Acer 1x M.2 + 1x 2.5" (no RAID) and Asus only the single 2.5". They're in a different league, imo.

For those still checking out this model, the replacement was announced today, the NP7339. Basically same thing with GTX 960M. Its ETA is March 20th.

So is it confirmed the only change is the GTX 960M? Since that card is apparently just a slightly higher clocked 860M, this doesn't really warrant much attention.

The specs that are up are correct, I think the only change was the GPU. As you mentioned there isnt much difference between the 960M and 860M, and the reason is the 860M 2.0GB was already Maxwell.

Everything that was going to be announced has been since the NDA lifted today. It was for the 960M, 950M, and 940M. We don't know of anything else coming out soon but technology changes so quickly you never know.

There will be a performance bump since it will be clocked higher. We havent got them in hand to test yet. Have you got your computer already? Check with your reseller and see if you can get the 960M instead.

Got mine today, so far I like it a lot. Temps seem absolutely fine - running P95 small FFTs and Furmark gets me to high 70s on both processor and GPU, so that's pretty good imo. Is it worth it to install Prema Mod? I don't plan on OCing much and I'm a bit worried about flashing a BIOS, and if that would void my warranty and all that. What are some very conservative OC/undervolt numbers to start with if I decide to go there?

One concern: My bluetooth mouse has been dropping in and out with the default wireless chip. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Does anyone know how to get ethernet working on this thing with Linux? Can't seem to even find the integrated Ethernet chip model. To further elaborate, it doesn't seem to be getting detected at all in driver manager, ethtool, etc.

I wonder how much bleeding should be acceptable with this screen.

I bought a W230SS on sale here in Sweden (labeled a Webhallen Config L14) and overall I'm very impressed with the computer, all apart from the bleeding which I think is really quite bad.

I'm not sure if it's enough to warrant a replacement but it would be nice to see some other screens for reference. I tried to film my screen with my phone but it didn't really turn out that great and might not be a fair representation

Here's the clip of it booting anyways:

Should I just live with this, try and get it replaced under warranty?

    Cheers,
    Chris

This is a known issue, and sending it back to your reseller probably will not help. At any rate, the bleeding is nearly unnoticeable when actually running Windows and other games. Don't worry about it.

IC Diamond is typically preferred over arctic silver. While they do both cool well, it seems ICD has a little better cooling and has a long life span before you need to repaste.

New Nvidia drivers got released 347.88

From the feedback thread on Nvidia's forum it looks like that overclocking is back? I"ll give it a shot and report back

edit: All's good. Overclocking is back on latest drivers
